Opening Day Lineup

So the dust has settled and now the real action is about to begin. with all the rumors about trades the Giants are going to make and free agents they are going to sign. Everyone has a different view of what the opening day lineup is going to be. So my question to you is, what do hope the opening day lineup/starting rotation is?

And for you realists/pessimists what do you expect the lineup/rotation to be?  LOL Velez!!!

I still cringe at the thought of Velez/Torres receiving the most PAs on the team. We are in for another offensive doozy.

I think Bochy is pretty dead set on our leadoff hitters barring both of them being traded away. I think even if we got a solid baserunner in Podsednick our lineup would still begin like this on a daily basis:

Velez/Torres <——- decent #7 hitters
Podsednick <——— decent leadoff hitter
Sanchez <———- NOT a #3 hitter

Neukom and Sabean have hinted at expanding payroll if the situation presents itself, and the situation HAS presented itself. Not that Bay won’t be vastly overpaid, but he’s not being crazy unreasonable like other top free agents are being. The Mets’ offer to Bay is heavily backloaded, and you can be sure any Giants’ offer to Bay will be the same thing. These moves make the Giants’ the team to beat in the NL West, because the rest of the teams, including the Dodgers, seem to be spinning their wheels.
As for Bay’s “dislike” of SF, let’s not forget that that came from Peter Gammons, and there’s no way that the player or the agent would have said anything like that. They’re not about to disparage the best offer that Bay has, even if they really felt that way. Of course that’s assuming that the Giants’ are the mystery team. The NY Post today guessed it was either the Giants or the Mariners, but from what I’ve read lately, the Mariners seemed to have moved on to John Lackey.

Rowand-Esqe in what way?

Rowand turned in a career year in a bandbox park in a division with meh pitching.

Bay put up his fifth 900+ OPS season since 03 in a division with some of the best hitters in the league.

Say what you will about Jason Bay, he’s a lot better than Aaron Rowand, and there’s no reason the Giants can’t afford to give him Rowand money + what it takes to land him.

I'm not saying he's exactly Rowand

Obviously, he’s a better player than Rowand.

I’m saying the contract will start looking Rowand-esque quickly. You realize that Fenway Park is probably one of the top three hitter’s parks in baseball, right?

Between Bay playing a less important defensive position (and not playing it as well as Rowand does), going into his thirties, etc, I think the contract would look very ugly in years 3-5.

Yes it might look good for the first year… but you’re not signing him for one year, you’re signing him for five. And given that ~$14 mil has been about his market value the past two years, I don’t think he’s a good bet to stay at that level for five years (and if the contract is backloaded… oh dear.)

I think you are signing him for 1-2 years in reality, it’s just that you need to give him 5 years in order to get the 2 years you want.

Wasting the SP talent we have on this team for the next couple of years would be criminal. Even if Bay is only good for the first two years of his contract, those two years will coincide with the peak performance from our awesome pitchers. And having a legitimate power hitter on this team other than pablo, in combination with our pitching, makes us a force to be reckoned with.

The Giants pitching is likely to regress next year (and even moreso if you add Bay to LF and Uggla to 2B.)

There are already reasons to think the Giants were more than a bit lucky last year and probably not as good as their record. It’s been said before, but it reminds me of the 2007 Seattle Mariners, which lucked into about 85 wins, decided they were therefore only 5 wins away from being a 90 win team (when it was more like 15 wins away based on talent) and made a ton of ill-advised moves to get themselves there and ended up blowing up spectacularly.

I think a lot of people are underestimating how far the Giants actually probably are from being contenders, as well as how much of an upgrade these players they want actually are.

by cain1rstballothof on Dec 13, 2009 11:24 AM PST up reply actions

I guess I’m just saying that a lot of people are looking at all this from the perspective that, “Well, the Giants won 88 games last year. They don’t need to improve that much to get to 95 because the pitching is going to be just as good as it was last year, so they just need to get the offense better!” when it’s highly unlikely that Giants pitching will up a team ERA+ of 123 again next year. The runs allowed is likely going to go up – the runs scored is going to need to go up more than people are expecting.

And there are probably ways to do that – I’d personally love to see them do something like sign Holliday, give Buster the catching job, sign Nick Johnson and give Bowker RF, but it’s not realistic.

I think JPon makes great points here, but I really doubt the Giants’ think that way. I think they think that Bay and Uggla would put them over the top. Even if she’s correct and they’re a lucky 88 win team, this would make them a legit contender instead of a fluky one. I agree, however, that 5 years to Bay is too much, but if you want him, how else do you get him? He loves Boston, and lives in Seattle. If you want him, you have to give him more than anyone else is offering.

I’m not really convinced by these “rowand to a corner” ideas. I mean, his production is only close to acceptable if you leave him in cf. Cameron ain’t the answer, if you ask me. We need more slugging from the corners in OF. Bowker might possibly provide this, but i don’t think you can count on it. Uggla to lf might work, but it’s a longshot to implement. Anyway, yes, it’s easy to poke holes, so I’ll try to work on my own master plan. Pretty sure it involves outfielders from Texas teams.

by BigO on Dec 13, 2009 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

It’s all about defense. Rowand is a decent defender in center, so he’d be a good defender in right, which you don’t see all that often (especially considering the cavernous nature of RF at AT&T). The defense would make up for the fact that he isn’t as offensively gifted as most corner OFs, and in all likelihood it would be close to having the traditional good offense/poor defense player that mans the corner OF spot in terms of overall value. I’m not opposed to the idea especially if we get a strong defensive CF like Cameron.

Let me know the last time a player who won two straight Cy Young awards and is only 25 was traded for minor leaguers who had done nada at the major league level. You would be the first to kill Sabean if they went bust or didn’t become the players that you expect them to be.

Abdrus, Borbon and Feliz are MLers and very highly rated. I expect Lincecum to make north of $12.5M this season. If healthy and productive this season he will become very expensive to the point only the Yankees or Red Sox would be willing to trade for him.

Sabean is safe.

you think the season ticket holders would be “fine” with Lincecum being traded away for a bunch of players they’ve never heard of? The bottom line comes into play here. There’s a fanpost or fanshot or whatever on the other side about a great one time minor league prospect by the name of Adam Miller. This franchise would be set back a decade if they traded Tim for minor leaguers who turned out to be not worth the hype.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

Yeah, I think through the press they could persaude a casual fan into being OK with this deal. Tim’s gone soon enough if this team wants to win anyway, he’s going to cost $25M/yr very soon.
Neftali has the goods to replace a starter, while also getting the best young SS in the game (already proven at 20 yrs old), a young CF with MLB experience, and one of the best 1B prospects in all of baseball.
I doubt Texas would pull the trigger actually.

If possible, keep Posey in AAA and use Ausmus and Whiteside until June, to prevent him from qualifying for Super Two. Of course, if they’re not hitting at all it may be necessary to call him up early. Bumgarner starts and stays in AAA, unless he’s tearing it up , has his velocity back, and we’re in contention late in the year; there are other pitchers who can fill a spot if necessary (Martinez or Pucetas particularly).

As long as we're dreaming...

SS – Renteria/Andrus

2B – Sanchez
3B – Sandoval
1B – Smoak
LF – Bowker
C – Posey
CF – Torres/Rowand

SP – Cain
SP – Zito
SP – Sanchez
SP – Martinez (placeholder for Bumgarner in Aug.)
SP – Neftali Feliz

This obviously weakens our SP (I’ve traded Lincecum to Texas for Smoak, Andrus, & Feliz), but adding two cornerstones in Smoak and Andrus – plus the potential of Feliz – and saving gobs of money makes it worthwhile to me. This would clearly live or die with the development of Bumgarner and Wheeler.
