Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

Just 30 starts and 127 PA in a Giants uniform. It makes we wonder, why would the Giants give up a top ten prospect for a guy if that small of a sample size would drastically change their view of him? Also, as the roster stood today, he was the 2nd best hitter on the team.

Not surprising. What a stupid fucking trade that was. To answer your question, because they’re fucking idiots.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

*headdesk*

I wonder whose sandwich Garko crapped in.

No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball

Bochy's, according to Baggs

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/extrabaggs/2009/12/12/giants-cut-ties-with-garko-remain-aggressive-looking-for-first-baseman/

This is one of those “what the fuck” kind of deals for me. I have no idea what the problem was, but if they really didn’t get a long then the Giants’ were right to cut ties. Especially with Johnny Gomes coming over (please please please please)

by tyrannoman on Dec 12, 2009 9:49 PM PST up reply actions

Could be Garko’s fault, too. We’ll never know. I’m no Bochy fan, but I don’t think it’s right to blame him for this when none of know the particulars

by tyrannoman on Dec 12, 2009 9:59 PM PST up reply actions

Garko could have peed in Bochy’s office and he should have still been out there if he was the best option.

If he wasn’t the best option, then we shouldn’t have traded for him.

I don’t know about that. The rug did tie the room together.

I do have a lot of faith in the Giants’ FO in evaluating internal pitching prospects. Except for the Twins trade, every one I’ve had my panties in a bunch about they were right and I was wrong. If they think Barnes is worth a mid-level platoon 1B, I’m okay with that. Garko came over, and he happened to be stone cold. Garko may have thought that he should be starting, and whined like a little bitch. Or, conversely, Bochy may have demanded a series of passionate BJ’s before batting practice in order to secure a starting position (so to speak). Garko’s not good enough for me to get really worked up about, and though I don’t care for Bochy without knowing the specifics I can’t agree with your black and white assessment.

by tyrannoman on Dec 12, 2009 10:07 PM PST up reply actions

I envy you

I don’t have faith that Sabes can do anything right. Plus Barnes was a top 10 prospect and a lefty with a 90+ FB and those don’t grow on trees. He probably won’t be a starter but it just represents Sabes overpaying again.

by Gobroks on Dec 12, 2009 11:29 PM PST up reply actions

I’m assuming Garko got upset when Bochy decided to move Sandoval to first and play Uribe at third late in the season against left handed pitching. While I can’t stand Bochy, with his reputation as a player’s manager I would think Garko might have been at fault here.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

Seriously? I get being mad at Sabean for the offense, but Lincecum, Cain, Wilson, et al were all developed in the last few years, and they are very very good (or in Lincecum’s case, great). You can’t be pissed about all the bad (Zito, Rowand, etc) without acknowledging the positive & vise versa.

by tyrannoman on Dec 13, 2009 10:22 AM PST up reply actions

Fair Point

I just remember being pissed when the Garko trade happened and livid when the Sanchez trade happened. I guess I should’ve said I have no confidence that Sabean can make a trade that will benefit the Giants.

by Gobroks on Dec 13, 2009 2:59 PM PST up reply actions

Fair Enough

Though after reading the few writers I really feel have a handle on the goings on in the MLB (mainly Keith Law), I don’t think that Alderson is going to be as good as we all hoped. That helped assuage the sticker shock I felt when the trade happened. Time will tell, as always.

by tyrannoman on Dec 13, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I've heard people say that scouts were down on Alderson

although now I kinda feel like we sold low on him. Still I hope the best for him just not against the Giants.

by Gobroks on Dec 13, 2009 6:43 PM PST up reply actions

I didn’t get a chance to see him throw in person, but his uber-jerkey delivery scared me a lot. He really does look like an elbow injury waiting to happen. I, like you, hope I’m wrong because he seems like such a good guy.

by tyrannoman on Dec 13, 2009 6:54 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I could see an elbow injury in his future

because of his delivery and the fact that he throws a ton of curve balls.

stat nerds were right!

What a horrible trade. I kind of liked it at the beginning because I thought Garko would be a decent hitter for the team. Yet…

Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?

by shikantaza on Dec 12, 2009 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

I didn’t mind the trade then. Barnes is a nice prospect, but the team was starved for hitting. That being said, letting garko go changes everything for me.

“Hey guys! Free pitching prospects over here! Go ahead, take 3!”

Sabean is a great GM

Theo Epstein only helped 1 team this year. Sabes helped both the Indians and Pirates.

by Gobroks on Dec 12, 2009 11:30 PM PST up reply actions

the things that bother me with any of these threads is
1. the assumption that the prospect we traded is going to be great or even good. Only time will tell on that.
2. the assumption that the prospect had some kind of great league wide value and the Giants’ could have gotten much more for him. There is just no way of knowing that.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

by rxmeister on Dec 13, 2009 7:39 AM PST up reply actions

I didn’t assume either of those things. IIRC, I was generally pleased with the trade. It just looks strange now that we released garko, unless we’re right on the verge of signing johnson.

Unless Garko was such an asshole that it just wouldn’t work. Like rx says, we just don’t know any of these particulars. Baggs really doesn’t write about negative clubhouse issues that often, so his statement carries a lot of weight for me

by tyrannoman on Dec 13, 2009 10:19 AM PST up reply actions

I still don't get this

Who cares if he was an asshole?

by thehavenot on Dec 13, 2009 10:36 AM PST up reply actions

If he’s such an asshole he can’t get along with anybody on the bench, bitches and moans constantly, and is a general pain in the ass unless you posses All World talent like Bonds did, it’s just not worth the headache. Garko might not be worth the hemorrhoid. Clearly I have no idea, I’m just throwing out all the alternatives, because we won’t ever know all the information.

by tyrannoman on Dec 13, 2009 11:07 AM PST up reply actions

Typically, people like that are well-known. See Bradley, Milton.

The baseball Satanist

by thehavenot on Dec 13, 2009 10:39 PM PST up reply actions

I’m not sure about that. I think Bradley is well known for his huge, uncontrolled fits of anger in public. Throwing trash into the stands, screaming at managers, etc. The example that comes to mind for me is Sammy Sosa. He seemed like such a great guy, and by the end of his run in Chicago it came out he was a total dickweed, and as his skills eroded (ahem) he was no longer worth the effort to put up with him.

Again, I’ve no idea if this was the case with Garko. I’d rather he cause Bochy a massive ulcer and caused his retirement.

by tyrannoman on Dec 14, 2009 9:12 AM PST up reply actions

If, for the sake of discussion, Garko was that bad of a presence that makes him, Hillenbrand & AJ (3 out of the last 4 MLB “staring” players traded for). That type of pattern should be very troubling.

Who’s brain did you bring me?

and i don’t care about scott barnes. i’m a lot more pissed about them non-tendering him than the trade.

by kingofthacove on Dec 12, 2009 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

I still like Garko

He looks like a baseball player. He will probably hit .330 with 30 jacks next year.

I have finally accepted the fact that I will never win a McCoven award.

by The Thrill on Dec 12, 2009 10:21 PM PST reply actions

Yeah I imagine he'll be pretty popular in FA

Braves need a placeholder 1B until Freeman is ready.
Ditto for the Orioles with Snyder.
Mets fans seem to want him to platoon with Murphy at 1B.
White Sox could use him and move Konerko to DH.

There are probably others but im too pissed to think straight.
