Seriously, this is a Christmas present if the Giants have any shot at it. Serious right-handed power. Do it.

Also, I'm curious

Anyone able to provide names of players who have succeeded wildly after being non-tendered?

N/M, got confused

Obviously, good players get non-tendered frequently.

David Ortiz, Rick Ankiel, Joel Pineiro, Ryan Franklin, David Eckstein, and Jayson Werth are some of the better-known non-tenders of recent years. A year ago the more interesting names included Ty Wigginton, Joe Nelson, Willy Taveras, Jonny Gomes, and Takashi Saito.

I have finally accepted the fact that I will never win a McCoven award.

What other teams may be non-tendering could be better that any players that we have. Just because they are non-tendered doesn’t necessarily mean that they are bad. Because the Giants are more than likely non-tendering Garko does that mean he isn’t a decent player? No. It means that after he was traded to the Giants he didn’t adjust well and Sabean has given up on him based on a small sample size not to mention that Ishikawa with similar numbers will cost less money.

that actually makes sense, as you could outright a player (Bocock anyone?) if you make a signing.

by tyrannoman on Dec 12, 2009 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

I have to admit my eyes did light up when I saw that on MLBTR. I’m really surprised the Reds made that move, but Walt Jocketty appears to have taken massive amounts of crazy pills. That Rolan deal, no cutting loose Gomes…to bad he won’t trade Votto for some Burris/Bocock-ian goodness.

by tyrannoman on Dec 12, 2009 4:39 PM PST reply actions

the Rolen deal still stings for many of the Reds faithful

and I’ll add the vast overpayment of Willy Taveras and Mike Lincoln to your list.

by sharks on Dec 12, 2009 9:35 PM PST up reply actions

totally forgot about the Tavares deal. That was awful as well. They’re going to end up trading Harang for peanuts as well, just wait. They’ve really squeezed themselves into a corner with that Rolen trade, not getting the Jays to kick in any $$ at all, then having to trim payroll. I used to have a lot of respect for Jocketty, too.

I'm at a loss for why the Reds didn't just go to arb with him

after watching him last yr I think he’d fit on the giants, he’d be good in a platoon situation with bowker/lewis/etc. The Reds probably think they can get him below arb value, but I’m not so sure about that, personally I don’t let a guy go who just has a SLG of .540, but I guess I should be used to it from them by now.

by sharks on Dec 12, 2009 9:29 PM PST reply actions

The only reason this makes sense to me is if the Reds really feel Alonzo is ready, and Votto will move to LF. That will save them some $$, and get a better bat in the lineup. Of course, they should’ve been able to trade Gomes for at least an organizational player.

I can see why, he’s a pretty worthless player who stands to make a decent salary in arbitration due to the fact that defense won’t be valued high enough.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on Dec 13, 2009 9:01 AM PST up reply actions

I guess it depends on your definition of decent salary

good point on defense and thats true, but he is not due to make some sort of huge raise in arb, I’ve heard 1.25 – 1.75 mil thrown around as his likely range. I don’t think thats all that bad for a guy who’s good against lefties, can give you some spot starts (and can be subbed out defensively), and is good RH power off the bench as a pinch hitter. Is he a starter? absolutely not, but for that kind of money I think he’s worth it. not really sure what his salary will end up as, but I’m not sure I’d classify it as decent if it’s below 2 mil for one year. just my opinion.

by sharks on Dec 13, 2009 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

I'll add

that I’m not all that aware of how he compares to some of the fringe type guys being mentioned here. but I guess from what I’ve seen from the Giants offense having a guy that can give you the offsensive boost every once in a while is useful. so if they have guys that are about as good as he is then it wouldn’t really make sense for them to sign him.

I guess I’m not too surprised the Reds didn’t retain him after thinking about it some, since they have guys that might be able to replace him next yr (balentien, heisey, frazier, francisco). none of them are a sure thing though or could use some time in AAA.

by sharks on Dec 13, 2009 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

The same Johny Gomes who has been above replacement level once in the last 4 years and who has been worth -0.8 WAR over that period? No thanks. His defense is attrocious, Adam Dunn bad, and whilst he’s got a decent bat it’s only Garko level (career wOBA of .344). Combine abhorent defense with a mediocre bat and you get a worthless player i’m afraid and that’s why he was non-tendered presumably.

I didn’t think it was possible to find a worse candidate to start than Velez but that’s two (Gomez and Podsednik) mentioned in a few days.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on Dec 13, 2009 1:23 AM PST reply actions

Nope, the Jonny Gomes who has a career .274/.369/.517 slash line against lefties who could be available very cheaply to a team that currently doesn’t have any outfielders that hit lefties all that well. Nobody is saying he’s anything more than a platoon player/bench bat, but with plenty of in-house options to play ok defense and bat left handed in LF why not take Gomes?

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 13, 2009 4:36 AM PST up reply actions

That’s an OK line but once you combine it with with his terrible defense it really isn’t very good and is probably less valuable than Torres.

Also it’s worth noting that our roster is overfull of outfielders anyway, so whilst adding him might seem OK in a vacuum, it’d probably end up with someone more valuable (Lewis, Schierholtz, Bowker) being released or traded for nothing.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on Dec 13, 2009 5:47 AM PST up reply actions

Why would Lewis, Nate or Bowker get moved instead of Velez? Especially with Torress providing all Velez does and more. Heck duck tape a trapper on his glove hand and let him clank around 1st base this spring and see what happens.

Who’s brain did you bring me?
Brain SabeanOranother.

by daveinexile on Dec 13, 2009 9:49 AM PST up reply actions

We’ve currently got 6 OF (Rowand, Velez, Torres, Lewis, Bowker, Schierholtz). If we carry 5 OF and make no additions, one will have to go. If we sign Gomez then two have to go. If we make another upgrade then three of them will have to leave.

That means signing Gomez would require one of Lewis, Bowker or Schierholtz to leave unless he precludes us from making another OF signing (which would be equally as stupid). And all this to upgrade over Torres when i don’t think he’s an upgrade at all. SIgning a replacement level OF when we’ve got loads of them seems a bizarre idea to me.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on Dec 13, 2009 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

Or you just give him Garko’s now empty slot.

Who’s brain did you bring me?
Brain SabeanOranother.

by daveinexile on Dec 13, 2009 3:40 PM PST up reply actions

True but then why would you non-tender Garko to sign a much worse version? And again, we should be looking for a bigger upgrade at 1B, and i’m not sure i’d rather him to Ishikawa.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on Dec 14, 2009 1:08 AM PST up reply actions

They might like his swing more. Or just like him more. The Brass thinks paying $3M to Garko for 300-400 innings on the field as too much but Gomes ( who has shown he can hit in the NL) could play the early innings in LF on some the games and then gets pulled late for a glove man. On games he doesn’t start he could be viewed a pinch hitter on the bench for the middle – late parts of the game. ( Think G.A. HIll with a few more walks) In short they might very well think he could give them more for $2-3M then they would get from Garko.

At any rate Gomes should not block an upgrade at 1st base. The only reason I mentioned spring training work for him there is it could give a manger a place to hide him for a couple innings a week.

Who’s brain did you bring me?
Brain SabeanOranother.

by daveinexile on Dec 14, 2009 10:13 AM PST up reply actions

I’ve pretty much almost accepted the fact that Lewis will be released or traded for garbage whether the team signs Gomes or not.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 13, 2009 9:51 AM PST up reply actions

Quite possible but if we’re dealing with reality there’s no way they’re not carrying Velez on the team. Which means signing Gomez either causes you to lose Bowker or Schierholtz or he precludes you from making a proper upgradein the OF which is what we should be doing.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on Dec 13, 2009 3:29 PM PST up reply actions

Gomes would be a terrible, terrible starter. Unless you’re sure that his 300 PA’s in 2009 mean more than his entire career, he’s just a slightly above average hitter (107 OPS+ over the past three years) with absolutely no defensive skills. Simply not as valuable Lewis, or even Schierholtz. Not even better than, dare I say it, a Velez/Torres platoon.

On a strict platoon with Lewis Bowker Schierholtz Velez? Sure, probably beats Torres, though I still wouldn’t be that excited. His defense really is that bad.

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Dec 13, 2009 5:30 AM PST reply actions

I’m not sure he even beats Torres to be honest. I think it’s likely that Torres is 30 runs better defensively than Gomes in LF. That means Torres probably only has to put up something like a .315 wOBA against lefties to be as valuable. I’m not a huge Torres fan but I’d imagine he’s got a good chance of doing that (it’s about what his overall projections are)

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
