Thomas Neal is a beast, but I had to blindly vote for my adopted son.

It's spelled "T-A-K-O-T-U-E-S-D-A-Y-S-!-!-!."

I support inroywetrust in his support of The VD Special in his support of me supporting Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

A recent realization made me like this particular section of Moneyball that much more:

takes Blanton with the twenty-fourth pick, pauses while the Giants make their pick, then takes McCurdy with the twenty-sixth

That 25th-overall pick they didn’t even bother to mention? Cain.

A lot of Moneyball’s player evaluation is a little hilarious in hindsight. It dissed Prince Fielder pretty heavily (pun intended) as I recall.

Perhaps a suggestion..

I’m kind of lost in what has gone on lately, but what is the deal with Angel? Where should he be or just plain should he be on the list?

I think that with his Visa status revoked and the lingering character questions, most people just won’t touch him with a ten-foot pole, where each foot of the pole represents one spot on a top-ten list.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

I sort of think we should assume he’s going to be back with the team next season and rank him accordingly, though he should have a big fat asterisk wherever he ends up.

by Evan on Dec 1, 2009 12:34 PM PST up reply actions

So, the problem as I see it is, I don’t think we can get everybody to vote in the same mindset when it comes to Angel. There will be those who will vote with a similar mindset to yours, those who vote with a mindset that he’s never coming back, and everywhere in between. The outcome should be a good approximation of his risk vs. reward though.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

Maybe just have a last poll as where should angel be and list a range of numbers, then if he is #B in our final list.

Yeah I am writing a comment to disagree with myself…his age and lack of handle on the position and inconsistency (at least from what I have seen with both his time in the Giants system and down in Venezuela) say there might not be much in the way of upside…especially when he got totally outshone by Velez (if memory serves me right they both came in this year at the same time when Velez went on his couple weeks of terror). Take him off…or I guess don´t put him on.

Jason Stoffel

He dominated the AFL and NWL in short stints there. He’s another guy who was highly touted coming into his last college season but struggled a bit and thus dropped in the draft (like Crawford and Kieschnick the draft before.) With a low to mid-90s fastball and, when he locates it, unhittable slider, he’ll move quickly through the system.

He’s not a top 5 guy, but could be a 10 ten guy and should be on the list.

Really like Stoffel. Definitely seemed to have that closer demeanor. Works fast, throws hard and the slider was definitely plus. Though it wasn’t unhittable in the Rob Nenn way, at least when I saw him.

I really wish I would’ve seen Casilla to compare the two.

by Evan on Dec 2, 2009 11:11 AM PST up reply actions

I’m thinking about voting for him at 10. I’ll certainly place him in my top 15. I just don’t see a lot of red flags that would prevent him from reaching a very useful floor.

Present power, inexperience, running and a soft body are the only knocks. Since he’s a catcher I don’t think the latter two are a big deal and given his youth I’m not too worried about the first two either.

That, in and of itself, shouldn’t preclude anybody. Think of all the really good players that started in a rookie league. And not having coming up through a intenvsive high school or amateur program, I’m certainly willing to give him just a little slack in development… at least until he’s 22 or so.

I’d want to hear even a faint whisper of enthusiasm about him from scouts before I take him seriously.

by Evan on Dec 3, 2009 6:43 AM PST up reply actions

True but most of those good players had good scouting reports, etc to have confidence in them. I’m not sure what reason i could have to rank Sanchez highly. He doesn’t have any scouting hype, he doesn’t have a draft position to fall back on, he doesn’t have a large bonus to fall back on and he has barely any track record. Don’t get me wrong, i like him and hope he develops nicely, but i don’t see any evidence to give him a top 10 ranking.

by giantdonkey on Dec 1, 2009 1:57 PM PST reply actions

I think I’d have him in the back end of the top 10. Higher upside than all but maybe 4 to 5 guys in our organization. Obviously a huge bust factor only further complicated by the vision issues.

But IMO his upside is so much higher than most of our prospects, that I think he’d merit consideration for the top 10.

Obviously it's too soon for him to be considered

But what do y’all think of Chris Gloor? I remember him being praised by some smart folks after the draft, and his numbers in Salem-Keizer look pretty nice. I don’t really know much about him beyond that, though.

by jcb9 on Dec 1, 2009 2:17 PM PST reply actions

I saw Gloor pitch three innings of scoreless relief. I liked him. Huge guy, but looked a little soft. Had three quality pitches. Low 90s fastball. His change had rookie league hitters baffled, but I don’t have a good enough eye to tell if it was truly that good of a pitch or if it’s just too advanced for the young hitters. Breaking ball was getting swing and misses, but didn’t have the sharp break of Wescott’s slider (who Gloor relieved.)

Though Gloor had a great playoff start, his regular season stats suggested he was much better in relief. In 30 innings as a starter he allowed a .262 BA and struck out 7.5 per 9 IP. In 18.1 innings of relief he allowed hitter to bat only .148 and K’d 11.3/9 IP.

I didn’t see him as a starter, but I wonder if his stuff plays up in relief. He definitely could lose 20-30 pounds, and I think he’ll need to in order to become a succesful starter. Short of that he seems like a promising relief prospect which is pretty solid considering what round he lasted to.

by Wonderful Terrific Monds on Dec 1, 2009 2:47 PM PST up reply actions

Great, thanks

Reading the first paragraph, I was all ready to ask, “So, is he seen as a starter or reliever?” and then, boom!

As mentioned Gloor’s playoff start in a crucial game 3 of the best of 5 NWL championship was fantastic: 6.1 IP 0 R 3 H 5 K 0 BB.

Just one start, but he’s proven capable enough at times that it might be worth trying to stretch him out. He’s got a Dennis Reyes body type (though taller), so I think conditioning is the big thing with him.

There are actually a bunch of interesting arms on that S-K staff IMO.

I’m in Memphis, TN (southwest corner of TN, just above MS). Meridien, I believe, is in the center of state (north/south) and to the east (near AL). I’m guessing it would be a 3-4 hour drive from here (down to Jackson, east to Meridien).

Sadly, I know nothing about Meridien. Our move to Memphis was to be a temporary one, while we got some job experience and decided where we really wanted to live (wife from Ohio, me from Sacramento). (30 years and 2 kids later, we’re still here.) As such, I never had much interest in exploring this part of the country, and still really haven’t.

Hey, I never even saw a poll for #1 or #2

Either this is a rigged poll or I just wasn’t paying attention.
That said, I would have voted for Buster and MadBum in that order anyway.

For #3 I voted for Neal. Sickels and BA seem to like him quite a bit, so he is becoming more and more legit amongst expert observers. His baserunning ability was a pleasant surprise in the AFL, so I am hopeful that he is one of those players with a multitude of tools who can pretty much do anything he wants to on the field if he is healthy and he sets his mind to it.

Generally yes, though only at the extremes. It’s pretty intuitive – if you stand really close to the plate, you’ll get hit often. That’s why Utley has lead the league in HBP each of the last three years.

Frank Robinson led the league 7 times. Though, for all the talk you hear about how pitchers in the 60s were such head hunters, its interesting to see Robinson leading the league with figures like 8, 9, and 11.

It’s interesting, though, that the HBP rate went down for the first ten years or so after they put in the DH, before rising astronomically. I’d bet on armor as the biggest cause of the increase.

Not sure if anybody caught this over the Thanksgiving holiday, but the Giants have officially put Angel Villalona on the restricted list. Not sure how that affects what we want to do with him for these lists, but as the RL puts him in a quasi- not officially in the organization space, that we might want to go ahead and exclude him from contention until he’s officially a Giants player again.

As I understand it, essentially he’s frozen in time. The Giants still own the rights to him, but he can’t participate in any of our baseball activities and his various service time clocks all stop ticking unless and until he’s back on an active list.

Ryan Cavan – age 21- Played for Salem-Kaiser, was 6th in league in OPS, 6th in SLG, 10th in OBP, 8th in BB and 6th in HRs

Brock Bond – age 24 – Why are people so skeptical of him? 3rd in league for OPS, 1st in Avg, 1st in OBP and 5th in BB
