McCovey Chronicles Community Prospect List #3
Please do not rec these, we don't want to have them cluttering up the recommended fanposts. Thanks
Ok, so Buster Posey wins in dominating fasion. Here is our list so far:
- Buster Posey
- Madison Bumgarner
For #3, we have the following options:
Tommy Joseph
Zack Wheeler
Each player should have a link to Baseball Cube in their first name and a link to First Inning in their last name. Joseph and Wheeler don't because they have no college or professional experience. The poll will close Thursday at noon.
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Thomas Neal is a beast, but I had to blindly vote for my adopted son.
It's spelled "T-A-K-O-T-U-E-S-D-A-Y-S-!-!-!."
I support inroywetrust in his support of The VD Special in his support of me supporting Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
I considered Wheeler but went with Neal mostly because it seems like so much can go wrong with a HS pitcher.
We're all basically Pedro Feliz.

A recent realization made me like this particular section of Moneyball that much more:
takes Blanton with the twenty-fourth pick, pauses while the Giants make their pick, then takes McCurdy with the twenty-sixth
That 25th-overall pick they didn’t even bother to mention? Cain.
Lethargy
It has me
A lot of Moneyball’s player evaluation is a little hilarious in hindsight. It dissed Prince Fielder pretty heavily (pun intended) as I recall.

I’m kind of lost in what has gone on lately, but what is the deal with Angel? Where should he be or just plain should he be on the list?

Kevin Frandsen, come back!
I think that with his Visa status revoked and the lingering character questions, most people just won’t touch him with a ten-foot pole, where each foot of the pole represents one spot on a top-ten list.

Yeah, I’m not sure what to do with him. He needs to be on the list somewhere, I just have no clue when to add him. Hopefully, this comment reccing system will get him on at the right time.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
I sort of think we should assume he’s going to be back with the team next season and rank him accordingly, though he should have a big fat asterisk wherever he ends up.
So, the problem as I see it is, I don’t think we can get everybody to vote in the same mindset when it comes to Angel. There will be those who will vote with a similar mindset to yours, those who vote with a mindset that he’s never coming back, and everywhere in between. The outcome should be a good approximation of his risk vs. reward though.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

Nah
saw him play eight games last year. Not enough there with the bat for a 1B with stone hands.
Matt Downs . The Kevin Frandsen of 2010 !
Yeah I am writing a comment to disagree with myself…his age and lack of handle on the position and inconsistency (at least from what I have seen with both his time in the Giants system and down in Venezuela) say there might not be much in the way of upside…especially when he got totally outshone by Velez (if memory serves me right they both came in this year at the same time when Velez went on his couple weeks of terror). Take him off…or I guess don´t put him on.

Jason Stoffel
He dominated the AFL and NWL in short stints there. He’s another guy who was highly touted coming into his last college season but struggled a bit and thus dropped in the draft (like Crawford and Kieschnick the draft before.) With a low to mid-90s fastball and, when he locates it, unhittable slider, he’ll move quickly through the system.
He’s not a top 5 guy, but could be a 10 ten guy and should be on the list.

Really like Stoffel. Definitely seemed to have that closer demeanor. Works fast, throws hard and the slider was definitely plus. Though it wasn’t unhittable in the Rob Nenn way, at least when I saw him.
I really wish I would’ve seen Casilla to compare the two.

Yeah, Sanchez.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
Huh?
You’re voting to REMOVE Sanchez???
Officially disinterested in any high school outfielders from the state of Mississippi.
I’m thinking about voting for him at 10. I’ll certainly place him in my top 15. I just don’t see a lot of red flags that would prevent him from reaching a very useful floor.
Present power, inexperience, running and a soft body are the only knocks. Since he’s a catcher I don’t think the latter two are a big deal and given his youth I’m not too worried about the first two either.
by Wonderful Terrific Monds on Dec 2, 2009 11:26 AM PST up reply actions
Things that could prevent him from reaching a useful floor
- Never been above rookie league.
- Never been above rookie league.
- Never been above rookie league.
I was promised lasagna.
That, in and of itself, shouldn’t preclude anybody. Think of all the really good players that started in a rookie league. And not having coming up through a intenvsive high school or amateur program, I’m certainly willing to give him just a little slack in development… at least until he’s 22 or so.
Officially disinterested in any high school outfielders from the state of Mississippi.
True but most of those good players had good scouting reports, etc to have confidence in them. I’m not sure what reason i could have to rank Sanchez highly. He doesn’t have any scouting hype, he doesn’t have a draft position to fall back on, he doesn’t have a large bonus to fall back on and he has barely any track record. Don’t get me wrong, i like him and hope he develops nicely, but i don’t see any evidence to give him a top 10 ranking.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
If someone needs to be removed from consideration from the #4 prospect, I’d say he’s the best candidate. I could certainly remove a few others, but I’d say he’s the one that create the fewest qualms among the electorate.

It was close but I went with Wheeler because he has more of a background (ie top 10 pick vs break out yr in hitter friendly league)
I wanted to vote for Neal, but my pessimism for the Giants actually developing a hitter persuaded me to go with Wheeler.
Adopted brother of Jason Jarvis. To pass the time during the offseason I decided to try my hand at blogging about photography and music.
Neal, only b/c I know what he can do. That is worth a lot more than a drafted HS pitcher.

I was going between Wheeler and Neal like it seems most were and went with Neal for the sole reason that in the Giants organization he seems to be rare…someone who actually has the talent to become a major league hitter…in another organization I might have gone Wheeler…but the utter failure to develop hitting made me push for Neal.
In Panda We Trust
I really want to vote Wheeler in there but I need to see more out of him. So for the time being I went with Neal. Maybe come mid season Wheeler will move up in my rankings.

I think I’d have him in the back end of the top 10. Higher upside than all but maybe 4 to 5 guys in our organization. Obviously a huge bust factor only further complicated by the vision issues.
But IMO his upside is so much higher than most of our prospects, that I think he’d merit consideration for the top 10.

Thomas Neal
Brother showed up healthy and put up the numbers. Really was impressed with his baserunning skills he displayed while in the AFL.
Obviously it's too soon for him to be considered
But what do y’all think of Chris Gloor? I remember him being praised by some smart folks after the draft, and his numbers in Salem-Keizer look pretty nice. I don’t really know much about him beyond that, though.
"Why not trade Bumgarner for some banger stud?" - sfgiants.com commenter or online porn ad? You be the judge!
Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis
I saw Gloor pitch three innings of scoreless relief. I liked him. Huge guy, but looked a little soft. Had three quality pitches. Low 90s fastball. His change had rookie league hitters baffled, but I don’t have a good enough eye to tell if it was truly that good of a pitch or if it’s just too advanced for the young hitters. Breaking ball was getting swing and misses, but didn’t have the sharp break of Wescott’s slider (who Gloor relieved.)
Though Gloor had a great playoff start, his regular season stats suggested he was much better in relief. In 30 innings as a starter he allowed a .262 BA and struck out 7.5 per 9 IP. In 18.1 innings of relief he allowed hitter to bat only .148 and K’d 11.3/9 IP.
I didn’t see him as a starter, but I wonder if his stuff plays up in relief. He definitely could lose 20-30 pounds, and I think he’ll need to in order to become a succesful starter. Short of that he seems like a promising relief prospect which is pretty solid considering what round he lasted to.

Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis
As mentioned Gloor’s playoff start in a crucial game 3 of the best of 5 NWL championship was fantastic: 6.1 IP 0 R 3 H 5 K 0 BB.
Just one start, but he’s proven capable enough at times that it might be worth trying to stretch him out. He’s got a Dennis Reyes body type (though taller), so I think conditioning is the big thing with him.
There are actually a bunch of interesting arms on that S-K staff IMO.

There is a possibility that my younger daughter and husband ( who runs a special program for the Air Force ) might end up in Meridian, MS.
IIRC, aren’t you in MS somewhere ? Any comments on Meridian ?
Matt Downs . The Kevin Frandsen of 2010 !
I’m in Memphis, TN (southwest corner of TN, just above MS). Meridien, I believe, is in the center of state (north/south) and to the east (near AL). I’m guessing it would be a 3-4 hour drive from here (down to Jackson, east to Meridien).
Sadly, I know nothing about Meridien. Our move to Memphis was to be a temporary one, while we got some job experience and decided where we really wanted to live (wife from Ohio, me from Sacramento). (30 years and 2 kids later, we’re still here.) As such, I never had much interest in exploring this part of the country, and still really haven’t.

Hey, I never even saw a poll for #1 or #2
Either this is a rigged poll or I just wasn’t paying attention.
That said, I would have voted for Buster and MadBum in that order anyway.
For #3 I voted for Neal. Sickels and BA seem to like him quite a bit, so he is becoming more and more legit amongst expert observers. His baserunning ability was a pleasant surprise in the AFL, so I am hopeful that he is one of those players with a multitude of tools who can pretty much do anything he wants to on the field if he is healthy and he sets his mind to it.
The first poll is 5 FanPosts down.

Lethargy
It has me
So, StatsFolk, is HBP a repeatable skill?
Officially disinterested in any high school outfielders from the state of Mississippi.
Generally yes, though only at the extremes. It’s pretty intuitive – if you stand really close to the plate, you’ll get hit often. That’s why Utley has lead the league in HBP each of the last three years.
I was promised lasagna.
Craig Biggio lead the league in HBP five times. One year he got 34!
"Why not trade Bumgarner for some banger stud?" - sfgiants.com commenter or online porn ad? You be the judge!
Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis
Frank Robinson led the league 7 times. Though, for all the talk you hear about how pitchers in the 60s were such head hunters, its interesting to see Robinson leading the league with figures like 8, 9, and 11.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
I bet
hitters were better at getting out of the way back before arm-guards and such like.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.
And its probably one of those “IN MY TIME _________ DID___________ BETTER!” things

Whatever
Bob Gibson was a pussy. Now, Walter Johnson, there’s a man who knew how to kill a puppy.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
I dunno

just doesn’t look like a puppy killer to me.
Come to think of it, Gibson would probably just kill Tim McCarver to intimidate the other team.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.
I wonder if there’s a difference by league. You hear people argue that AL pitchers aren’t afraid to throw at guys because they never have to hit for themselves.
We're all basically Pedro Feliz.
I can’t vote on this because I’ve only seen one of these guys play. I’ll just trust Baron or Brute’s opinion since both have seen most (if not all) of them play.
"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings
You definitely can, it’s the idea behind a community list. It’s a wisdom of the crowds approach. If if all you can do is look at the stats and/or some scouting reports, that’s fine.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Not sure if anybody caught this over the Thanksgiving holiday, but the Giants have officially put Angel Villalona on the restricted list. Not sure how that affects what we want to do with him for these lists, but as the RL puts him in a quasi- not officially in the organization space, that we might want to go ahead and exclude him from contention until he’s officially a Giants player again.

that’s what both the BA and SIckel’s lists did

How does the restricted list work? He’s not on our roster, but other teams can’t take him either?
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
As I understand it, essentially he’s frozen in time. The Giants still own the rights to him, but he can’t participate in any of our baseball activities and his various service time clocks all stop ticking unless and until he’s back on an active list.

I just did some researching.
Can anyone tell me anything about any of these players?
Ryan Cavan – age 21- Played for Salem-Kaiser, was 6th in league in OPS, 6th in SLG, 10th in OBP, 8th in BB and 6th in HRs
Brock Bond – age 24 – Why are people so skeptical of him? 3rd in league for OPS, 1st in Avg, 1st in OBP and 5th in BB
Im not saying top prospect, but those are good numbers.
