Meulens first batting session
Im fearful that the giants will want to see what Meulens can do with Ishi at this year and not sign anyone for third or first.

I doubt the giants put any more stock in the batting coach than I do.
There’s no such thing as a miracle working hitting coach at the major league (or probably any other professional) level.

I believe in overall hitting philosophy and game plans that can approve an individual’s hitting.

Improve, yes.
Dramatically, no. Not for a player of Ishikawa’s age and professional experience.

I’m more fearful they’ll non-tender Garko and keep Ishi around.
Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

This was perhaps the most encouraging Giants-related news I’ve read all year. Fantastic. It sounds like Meulens actually understands what’s required. Now if they’ll just let him do his thing, and give it time for the results to appear.
Thanks for the link!
"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."

“When you take pitches early in the game, you get to see what pitches are working for (the opposing pitcher) and which ones aren’t. And you let the guys behind you see more pitches,’’ he said.
That is certainly a much better approach than the “hacktastic” ways of the 2009 Giants.

But the first pitch you see might be the best pitch you see the entire at bat! What am I saying? All game! All year, even! You HAVE to swing!
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

At the risk of falling into the "chasm"...
featuring one baseball’s best hitters. It’s appropriate for this discussion, and a philosophy that I agree with.
I teach this as a Coach. Granted 14 year old Fastpitch Softball players are not major leaguers. Having an approach at the plate not based on a single pitch, but doing the right thing with the pitch you are given.

This team needs BLB to teach the hitters the art of setting up a pitcher/pitching staff
/swing badly at pitch
//wait for same pitch later in the ab/game
///crush HR

Meulens talks a good talk
Now we’ll see if they can “walk the walk”.

This made me scream:
He’d like to see more of what the Giants did against Ubaldo Jimenez and the Rockies on September 15. Giants batters were instructed not to swing until they had a strike. Jimenez needed 38 pitches to get through the first inning and had thrown close to 90 pitches before he was pulled in the third inning.
Why in the holy hell could the team manage to do that for just one game, and have it be remarkable enough that Bam-Bam could single out that one, solitary game as what the team should do. It’s not like was impossible, obviously. Seems like that was a major failing on someone’s part.
It's my blarg! Quick Pitch

Wow, this is a refreshingly original idea. Can’t wait to see it implemented. Could it possibly work?!?

From the second article on the blog
The Giants held a three-hour meeting Wednesday of the entire staff. They went over highlights of the 2009 season and laid out plans and goals for 2010. (Orange Fridays are coming back!) There was particular focus, as you might imagine, on improving offensive production, including a better on-base percentage and a more consistent one-through-five batting lineup. Brian Sabean’s staff talked of identifying possible trades or free-agent signings.
Hopeful.
Still the loving, adoptive father of Hector Sanchez. And who doesn't love switch-hitting catchers with power and patience?

Identifying possible trade and FA targets?
Identify possible? Good god man, it’s a little late in the game for that. We finished identified possible FA and trade targets before the ASB, and we aren’t even getting paid.
