That's somewhat reassuring to hear

Winn was a great Giant, but he he’s not a good fit for this team anymore.

Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

He sucked out loud in 2009. Other than that, he was pretty good.

by quincy0191 on Nov 9, 2009 6:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Giants Manager Bruce Bochy loved Winn, and that might explain why the front office won’t look to bring him back in a reserve outfielder role. Even if they were to re-sign Winn to get 200 at-bats as a reserve, Bochy might be tempted to play him more often.

interesting speculation by Baggs there

I think we were better off with Bengie being a B player

IMO, this kinda hurts us. The big spenders love draft picks too and won’t want to give up too high of a pick for Bengie. I’d hesitate offering him arbitration now.

by ResDog on Nov 9, 2009 1:56 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I was thinking this also. Maybe the Giants will get lucky. We’ll find out.

If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.

by cybermaldonado on Nov 9, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I still dont think it hurts

I’d take Bengie on with arbitration, its a win win situation for the Giants. Someone will pick him up as he is one of the only catchers on the market that has some “decent” offensive numbers. He will get 2 years somewhere.

Offer Arbitration and if he accepts, he will be a few million and you can trade him.

by Giant Voodoo on Nov 9, 2009 2:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Eh, offer it anyway. If he accepts, then you have a catcher for 1/2 the season, if not you get draft picks.

Bob Howry as well. The amount of shit he got this year notwithstanding, he should be able to find a job this offseason pretty easily

I would take a shot and offer arb to Molina

I think he’ll refuse, and if he doesn’t he only delays posey for 1 year tops.
I think it’s too risky to off to Winn, he kinda has to take it.

I don’t think Molina will accept the offer at all. They should even tell him they are going to have Posey starting next year, just to really seal the deal.

Offer arb to: Molina, Howry, Johnson

Don’t offer arb to: Winn

The way I understand it, you don’t actually have to offer these players 80% of their previous year’s salary in arbitration if they’re not within the six years of team control; you can offer whatever you want. So tell them you’ll give them some shit salary. Molina will sign with another team; there are plenty of clubs that need catchers and are stupid (20 HRS! WOW!). I’d be okay with Howry returning, though he likely won’t (and I’m on the fence about offering him arb anyway), and Johnson will likely get a deal somewhere else to start considering the dearth of pitching. Winn really doesn’t have anything to bring to the team anymore; we have too many young OFs who need a shot.

Arbitration

When is the deadline for teams to offer players arbitration? I’m growing impatient with all the speculation. I wonder who arbitration is going to screw this year.

by Fresburg on Nov 10, 2009 9:15 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Cot’s says it is Dec 12 this year. It ussaly in the first couple week of December every year.

One of my favorite rosterbation dealines comes arround Thanksgiving as teams need to set their 40 Man rosters to protect players for the rule V Draft. This year’s rule V drafts happen Dec 7th.

any nuggets on whom the Giants will protect/not protect?

by Fresburg on Nov 10, 2009 12:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not yet. For as long as I been following this team I have never gotten any better at figuring out which farm hands they are going to do what with. It is both frustrating and makes me appreciate the Steve S, Brute, Baron and the prospect hounds all the more.

Part of why I like the Rule V is it gives me a reason to did back through other teams farms and see which experienced farms hands have done what in the last season. Another reason is it is chance for teams to improve a glaring weakness without a 2-3 contract. The 3rd reason is it gives guy that have spent years riding busses a chance to fly in jets and eat something besides peanut butter and Ritz.

I assume that Pill will be one of those guys since Baggs hinted that he would be likely added to the 40 man.

by Fresburg on Nov 10, 2009 12:52 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m assuming the Giants will do anything to keep Brian Bocock.

"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

by SFGuy on Nov 10, 2009 3:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

HE’S ON THE 40-MAN, IT’S OK.

by quincy0191 on Nov 10, 2009 3:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually...

Arbitration deadline is Dec. 1st. Players have to decide by December 7th. The December 12th line is the deadline for teams to make their actual contract offer that’s submitted to arbitration, assuming the players accepted.

ESPN confirms this.
