Bowker, Nate, Ishi and... Pill?
Those 4 are having a hitting session with Meulens on Monday. Sounds like they really want Nate to work hard on his offense this offseason. I hope Meulens can help him recognize a breaking ball.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say Brett Pill likes to swing at that slider inside and in the dirt.

If he doesn’t, they will fix it this offseason

I’m guessing that this session will happen in the batting cages but nonetheless I will be trolling around the archways hoping to catch a glimpse on my lunch break.

We’ll expect a full report.
"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."

The full report
No baseball related items on the field. Only football goalposts that made me sad.

The one guy that always posts about Pill will be pleased.

I had the same thought and was surprised that he hasn’t done so already.

I’m thinking that Brett Pill’s presence is not a good sign for Ryan Garko. Looks to me like this session might go a long way to determine whether the Giants’ pursue help at first base, corner outfielder or both during this off season. If Pill impresses Meulens, I would think Garko will be non tendered.

I don’t think so. I’m not a big Garko fan but he IS a league average hitter. Pill probably wouldn’t be any better than Ishikawa is right now at the MLB level. He would probably be worse.

I also like the idea of him being the emergency/3rd catcher. Maybe I am trying too hard to find something, anything, positive about the post All Star game moves but a guy that would lurk on the bench for LHP pinch hitting, “play” a little first, a little LF, and small amount of C would not be unwelcome here.

yeah, that’s my point. It’s pretty obvious so far that the Giants’ don’t like Garko.

Very curious to see what they do with Garko.
Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

I’m going to be really disappointed if the Giants decide that a 28 year old who has hit well in the recent past is over the hill and not worth the effort.
Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.

/ Looks at Lewis. Looks at Garko. Looks at Lewis. Sighs, shakes head and goes toward a beer to cheer up with.

Sure, why not.

Report on today’s hitting session
lulz this:
He’d like to see more of what the Giants did against Ubaldo Jimenez and the Rockies on September 15. Giants batters were instructed not to swing until they had a strike. Jimenez needed 38 pitches to get through the first inning and had thrown close to 90 pitches before he was pulled in the third inning.
Ha. I was at the game that night and jokingly told my friend that the Giants must have been forced to take pitches. Their patience at the plate was HIGHLY unusual. They were being more selective than the Rockies which was saying something (although IIRC Zito pitched a gem that night).
Anyway, good stuff on Meulens. I don’t know how much he can really change our hitters, but I like his approach (no pun intended) so far.
If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

That strategy is probably a whole lot less effective when the opposing starter knows you’re doing it and can actually throw strikes, but still: WHY DIDN’T THEY USE IT AGAIN?

I’d much rather our batters swing at strikes than at balls

Technically, if you swing at it, it’s a strike.
However, I assume you meant “pitches in the strike zone” in which case I ask: How is Nate Schierholtz going to swing at a pitch in the strike zone that hits him the thigh?! Didn’t think about that now did you?
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Babby steps. Babby steps.
I have to say the line about whining for playing time feels a bit out of place. There is really not a single non Panda position player earned any first rights to playing time and there should be a sense of “If I play well that spot will be mine!” among the younger set.
