Yeah, they’re currently on a six-game win streak, which is pretty awesome. They play Detroit tomorrow night, which I’m slightly worried about. Especially with Setoguchi, Pavelski, Mitchell, and Vesce injured, and Blake questionable.

How long is Setoguchi out for?

by PiKAgiant on Nov 4, 2009 7:55 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No idea

He was only supposed to be out for a little bit, but he’s not even skating yet, so I’m guessing it’s worse than they first thought. And then their estimates are often completely wrong (see: Mitchell, Torry and the “6-8 weeks” that turned into “6-8 months”).

Well that’s just great with Setoguchi, at least the team is playing well without these guys

by PiKAgiant on Nov 4, 2009 7:59 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Pavelski is supposed to return the soonest, with Mitchell being pretty close as well.

But yeah, I’m quite surprised that the Sharks are playing this well with half of their top 6 out. And yes, I’m including Clowe in that group, because he’s sucking right now.

Well, it’s all heart, and you know, by far my favorite player on the sharks has to be Dan Boyle, and he’s playing so so so well. Everyone on that team has been playing pretty damn well lately

by PiKAgiant on Nov 4, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It really is impressive how well Boyle has been playing, especially because he’s had a broken thumb since training camp.

But, yeah. I’m really pleased with how Marleau, Nichol, Heatley, Demers, and Nabokov have been looking. There have been some pleasant surprises, especially with the third and fourth lines stepping up and contributing offensively.

MTR links to a story that the Cardinals made an offer to Matt Holliday:

The figure — six years, $96MM — probably won’t come close to getting a deal done. Boras, in all likelihood, will want more years and a higher annual salary. He has been adamant in comparing Holliday’s value to that of Mark Teixeira, who struck an eight-year, $180MM deal last winter with the Yankees. There are suitors out there with holes to fill and cash to spend, and a contract that doesn’t crack $100MM isn’t likely to catch the eye of Boras and Co

the Royals were the class of baseball for awhile. They built their organization from scratch and were competitive fairly quickly, and they were the first to build a modern baseball-only stadium that set the stage for Camden Yards, etc. That architecture firm, HOK, is from the area and went on to dominate most of the stadium building that followed.

I’m not a question.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

NO

No pro sports team (of all 4 major pro sports—MLB, NFL, NBA, even NHL) has been in its current city as long as the Giants have been in SF, without ever having won a championship in that city.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

Specifics...

NFL: Minnesota Vikings (1961)
NBA: Atlanta Hawks & Phoenix Suns (1968)
NHL: St. Louis Blues & Los Angeles Kings (1967)
MLB: San Francisco Giants (1958) ; Next is the Houston Astros (1962 or 1965, if you consider the name change from Colt 45’s to be significant)

it’s hard to call the Vikings unsuccessful, though. They’ve had so many winning teams, many Superbowls.

Yeah, but we're talking about rings...

Success is a totally different topic.

What you say about the Vikings could also somewhat be said of the Giants. Three times to the World Series, lots of great players, good teams. I think many would consider the Giants to have been a successful franchise.
