I hate the Mets, so I don’t want anyone from the Giants to ever play for them. I hope he goes elsewhere.

Correct me if I'm wrong
the Met’s have a protected first round pick so if they sign him before the arb period is up then we get a sandwich pick?
We're all basically Pedro Feliz.
Well, there’s a lot up in the air. I haven’t seen the rankings posted yet, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume that Molina is a Type A catcher.
The Mets do have a protected first round pick (#7 overall). So, if the Mets sign Molina and compensation is required, the Giants would at least get a sandwich round pick between the first and second rounds, and one of the Mets picks which would be at best a second rounder. It could possibly be a third or fourth round pick depending on if the Mets also pick up higher-ranked players.

Yeah, the Mets probably wouldn’t go more than 2 years, with Thole pretty much ready. And they have a lot of needs.

That's about the worst Mets blog there is, by the way.
I loathe Bengie Molina as a baseball player and want no parts of him. He’s barely above replacement level if you factor in his awful defense and baserunning. Unfortunately for me, the Mets are braindead and have a need at catcher. Can you say 2 years, $10M?
By the way, Keith Law said in a recent chat that he wouldn’t rank Molina in his Top 50 Free Agents.
www.twitter.com/willDavidian
he’s “clutch” and was the centerpiece of the worst offense in baseball. Trust me, you guys want him.

Even if you don’t factor in his terrible defense and baserunning, his hitting (.285 OBP FTW) puts him near or below replacement level.

Bengie Is About League Average On Defense
His % caught stealing is about league average, his % of PB/WP allowed is about league average. You have zero evidence other then Body Bias and Sabean Hating that his defense is terrible.
Bengie Molina is pretty damm close to a league average catcher overall and for you to claim otherwise is just silly.
by giantsrainman on Nov 5, 2009 4:49 PM PST up reply actions
I trust Keith Law more than Brian Sabean
And he says Molina’s terrible, so yeah, I’d take Josh Bard over him at this point.

Here Is Some Actual Data That Shows Bengie's Catcher Defense In The League Average Range
I am defining league average range as +3.5 runs to -3.5 runs with above average range being > +4 runs and below average range being < -4 runs.
Keith Law’s opinion shows me he is just as much body and OBP biases as you are. I prefew to trust evidence as opposed to biases.
by giantsrainman on Nov 5, 2009 9:59 PM PST up reply actions
Body Bias Is Back!
If Bengie Molina is -3.4 runs on defense (102nd out of 114 catchers), and a subpar hitter (and a terrible baserunner), why would a Mets fan want him?
GROUGTHINK ALERT
The first Chester Arthur fanboy ever.
You Really Think These Measurements Are That Percise?
I conclude from this that their are a handful of outstanding defensive catchers, a handful of terrible defensive catchers, and for the vast majority (including Bengie Molina) we really don’t have enough to tell their abilities apart.
by giantsrainman on Nov 5, 2009 10:35 PM PST up reply actions
As a Mets fan, what part of Bengie Molina should he like? Maybe it’s flawed evidence, but the best evidence we have says that Bengie’s not really good at anything.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
The first Chester Arthur fanboy ever.
He Has Had A SLG Of .440 Over The Last Three Years
He has been extremly dependable over these three years starting in 377 of 476 games. He has lead a young pitching staff from average to elite level over these same three years.
I can guarantee you that Bengie will be thought of by the Mets (and any other team looking for a starting catcher) as not just the best available but as someone they would be very happy with as the leader of their pitching staff and an RBI bat in the bottom third of their batting order.
by giantsrainman on Nov 5, 2009 11:22 PM PST up reply actions
I could lead time Lincecum and Friends from average to elite.
Bengie didn’t exactly ease Zito into the NL, btw. Not that I think he had any signficant impact on pitcher performance either way.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
I Very Much Doubt That You Could.
Find me a single quote from any MLB GM, manager, or coach that indicates he shares your view that who catches has no impact on how the pitcher performs. I don’t think you can. I don’t think support for this position exists within those actually making the decisions. This of course doesn’t make them right (and thus you wrong). The opposite couold still be true (though I personally tend to doubt it). But it does mean this is how they think and thus the bias that goes into every decision they make on who is going to catch.
by giantsrainman on Nov 6, 2009 12:41 AM PST up reply actions
The Hyperbole Is Not My Issue
It is the underling view that catchers have very little effect on how pitchers perform that I was making my point about. Again, my point is not so much that this view is wrong (though I do think it is wrong) but rather that those actually making decisions in MLB believe the exact opposite and thus make all their decisions on who should catch based on this view.

Just for clarification, is the consensus that we should offer Molina arbitration and risk the possibility of Bork stubbornly playing him for the year over Posey for the draft picks?
I wish Sabean was savvy enough to say publicly that Bengie would be back-up and some additional hurtful things to ensure he’d refuse arbitration.
I would support it…
I don’t want Molina back, but unless the market is dry, Molina has been clear he wants multiple years, so him accepting arbitration is unlikely.
Also, him accepting arbitration would also mean just one year, where a possible alternative might be another mediocre vet (there are quite a few of those) for two+.

Even If True, He Will Not Know This Until After He Has To Decide On December 7th.
There is in my judgement very little risk that Bengie will come around tto thinking accepting arbitration is his best option before it is too late for him to do so. The upside of two draft picks is far more likely and the Giants should not pass on this opportunity.

Sure!
You offer it and tell Molina he’s going to be back up to Posey when he’s ready, which will be this year. All of the sudden an offer from another team will look great because at least they offer a full time position. The only thing im afraid of is that the Mets sign another big fish and we get left wth fewer picks
Or maybe get stuck with Molina accepting arb

Game set match! That’s a clincher- no reason not to do it if this is true.
We won’t get anything from him if we don’t offer arb and if we do and he accepts and we cut him, but the latter option at least gives the chance of draft picks.

I’m not sure if anyone really knows what the Mets are going to do. Last year it was said they were broke because of the Madoff thing, now it’s being said that they got all of their money out of there with a huge profit before Madoff was caught. It’s also believed that Omar Minaya has been stripped of all of his powers and Fred Wilpon’s son, Jeff, is now running the team. Omar always liked Bengie, but Jeff Wilpon might not.

Bengie really would be a GREAT addition to your club. He is fantastic at handling pitchers, gets clutch hits, is an aggressive hitter and a great veteran clubhouse presence. Go for it!
That gring you hear in his knees isn’t bone on bone but just condensed grit that powers his powerful 4-hole bat. Savvy!
