MAJOR ROSTERBATION ALERT

Adopted Giant Darren "Speedy" Ford. Said by Andrew Baggarly to be the fastest minor league player and the best defensive outfielder in the Giants Organization. Now playing for your San Jose Giants.

ill never understand how people can think that putting a good player (sanchez) plus mediocre players together makes a perfect trade. A player that was horrible for the 2nd half of the season (Garko) and Schierholtz who hit around .214 the last 2 months of the season makes an ALL STAR player within reach. You would need to take out Garko and Schierholtz and start dropping in names like Neal, Kieschnick, Gillaspe, Crawford Ford (ehhh) and other people like that have some potential. We all over value our own prospects and I believe that most of us think that Schierholtz will be a player like he was in June and early July. But for a team trading an all star, they need proven quality or high up side players to consider that type of trade. Non of which we have extras to trade right now.

How about this for a "realistic" look?

Try to make some upgrades in areas of significant failure (read: offense), while not giving away current advantages.

Applied to this team, that would presume we prioritize the outfield defense, hoping this past year’s ridiculously good results can be at least partially repeated, thus continuing to strengthen and support our pitching. This would require a good defensive player for right field, and trying to maintain at least adequate defense in left. With strong defense, our pitching core remains the same, with small additions made via cheap/free pickups that have some upside as strikeout/flyball type pitchers (i.e., the same variety that made this year’s pitching such a success). If any free agent pitcher is signed for more that $1 million, it should be a starter, not a reliever, in an attempt to repeat the improvement we saw from our 5th starters this year as compared to the year before.

Thus, maintaining as far as possible the current reasons for our success, we attempt to improve the area of real need by upgrading offense at one or more of our infield positions, preferably first base. This upgrade would be given priority in terms of payroll dollars and/or trade value, since it is the one place that can likely only be improved by those means.

What does that look like with names? I’m not positive, but outfield answer could include any number of cheaply available outfield bats with reasonable production and good defense, with Carl Crawford or Matt Holliday being the white whales that combine at least some positive defensive value with true offensive impact. Either would require a substantial cost, and likely prohibit any additional expensive moves in either prospects (in Crawford’s case) or cash (in Holliday’s case). In both cases, any proposed deal is likely to fall through for any number of reasons, so backup plans would be necessary.

The infield, despite being the place we could apparently most afford to sacrifice defense for offense (given our pitching staff) is unfortunately less flexible, with a modest upgrade already being paid for at 2B, and a clear impact hitter at 3B. This leaves SS and 1B, and SS can be improved only if Renteria’s cost is written off as a loss for the year. I honestly don’t know who could be acquired for 1B, but that would seem to be the obvious place to focus efforts for a real impact hitter to pair with Sandoval.

I'm as tall as Mel - why can't I hit 500 home runs?

by SF Pete on Nov 3, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe so, but Bay had one really bad year in the last 3, and he hits for a higher .avg, walks more, has a better OBP, OPS, hits more HR’s, is fairly even in SB’s (the last 3 yes), and SO’s are about even. He’s 6 years younger and has handeled the “high pressure” situation in Boston and the AL East. His defense in LF to me would be worth dealing with. Plus Velez would be coming off the bench rather than starting. That alone is a big plus to a Bay signing.
I’d be very pleased with Bay, but no more than 4 yes.

If you could move Rowand to LF, and have Cameron and Nate/Torres in RF and CF, you’d have a great defensive OF and the upgrade offensively from Winn to Cameron would be substantial.

It’s all in the defense. An above-average defensive CF is sooooo much more valuable than a below-average defensive LF.

Taking defense into account then he probably is. Bay’s the much better offensive player but he’s a terrible LF whilst Cameron is a good defensive CF.

I wouldn’t mind Bay over Cameron if they came at the same price but Cameron should be available at a much better price.

I think it's possible Fenway skews defensive metrics for LF's

Manny’s fielding WAR looks a lot better since leaving Boston, while Bay’s looks a lot worse since replacing him in Fenway.

I mean, how is UZR calibrated for that short porch?

Bay is a bad fielder, but I’m not sure that he’s as atrocious as it appears at first glance. (except 2007, no idea WTF was going on there)

I’d also like Nick Johnson at 1B. That would leave us counting on another huge year from our ursidean third baseman, one I am not sure he can repeat. If we did get Cameron I’d put him in RF and move the Nate/Torres platoon to CF and put Rowand in LF. That would be outstanding OF defense.

Personally there’s two options that seem the most attractive to me at the moment:

1) Sign Matt Holliday
2) Sign Mike Cameron & Nick Johnson.

Both moves are possible and would upgrade the offense a lot without sacrificing defense. It’d leave to the following lineups:

1. Lewis 1. Lewis
2. Sanchez 2. Sanchez
3. Johnson 3. Sandoval
4. Sandoval 4. Holliday
5. Cameron 5. Garko
6. Rowand 6. Rowand
7. Posey 7. Posey
8. Renteria 8. Renteria

-Where do you propose we get the money for all of those FA signings? Bay will cost at least 15 mil per. Beltre could be around 7 or 8. I have no idea how much Wilson would be, but that’s still icing on the already eight-figure cake.
-Bumgarner starting 2nd in the rotation ahead of Penny(?), Zito (!?), and Cain(!?!?!)?
-WTF would we want Eric Byrnes for?

The very bad man traded my son...So now I'd like you all to meet my new son, Ryan "Aaron" Garko...Dammit it's just not the same!

Let me stop you right there

If you ever checked out their official blog, Glenn (Dennis) actually said that FX was not supposed to air commercials of Coors and D&B’s during that episode because the whole idea behind it was to kind of satire shows with sponsor plugs, although he also said about half of the viewers didn’t get it and thus hated that episode.

IASIP has never had sponsorships in the show so there was no reason, except attempting to be funny with the irony, for them to do plugs that obvious to the audience.

I just wanted to clear this up and while it is quite entertaining, it is not the best show ever unless they can last 5-6 more seasons with comedy gold.

Win the inning.

On a more realistic front, what about an Adam LaRoche/Garko platoon at 1B? A little on the weak side defensively, but good offense. If the Giants can’t get Holliday or Bay, I’d like to see them get LaRoche over NJ and keep Pablo at 3B.

Durability, power, and a .275/.355/.495 hitter who plays similar 1B D is someone I’d personally rather have than a fragile NJ with no power at all from a power position.
Just a personal preference though, much like I’d take Bay over Cameron, sacrafice some D in LF for a lot of O.

Branyan’s going to expensive after his great 2009 and Johnson does have power (23 dingerz in ‘06) it just hasn’t shown up in a while. But hey, he’s a great player just for that .401 career OBP (.426 last year!); add that into the lineup and it’ll help a hell of a lot! Yeah, Branyan is probably a better player at this point, all things considered, but Johnson is likely cheaper and quite helpful.

by quincy0191 on Nov 4, 2009 10:05 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

WHo is this .275/.355/.495 you speak of?

Seems like your talking about Branyan but there’s no way he could ever be considered a .275 hitter, at least in 2009/10. And if your talking about Garko, you’re about 40 points high on the slg.

I dont think we can afford to get NJ and Bay at the same time

It’d be much cheaper to keep Garko instead of signing NJ, and the money saved could be used to give Bay the 4/70 contract I’m sure he’s looking for.

And I don’t think we should platoon him with ishi either. Even though Ishi is seen as the better choice vs righties, Garko’s career OPS against righties (715) is only 15 points less than Ishis (730), and Garko could probably benefit from being an everyday starter.

So my realist/ideal lineup opening day would be

1) Torres/Velez/Scheirholtz RF
2) F Sanchez 2B
3) Pablo 3B
4) Bay LF
5) Garko 1B
6) Posey C
7) Rowand C
8) Renteria P
9) SP

I think, realistically, that’s the best that can be hoped for.

Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.

by GiantPain on Nov 4, 2009 8:41 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with this if Garko is playing over Ishi. I can’t watch Ishi play first with regularity next year. He’s fine as a defensive replacement but not a starter.
I think offering Bay 4/65 is the best move available without giving up anything this offseason.
And I can’t see why Sabean’s even considering non-tendering Garko, even if he wants NJ, Garko’s so affordable and has decent OBP and SLG potential he’s worth keeping.

Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

by cain1rstballothof on Nov 4, 2009 8:49 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s why i think it’d be preferable to go after Cameron instead of Bay as it’d allow room to get NJ (or LaRoche) as well. If Bay wasn’t so poor defensively I’d be happy to go with just him (as i am Holliday) but his poor defense means i think he’s likely to get paid more than he’s worth.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

I’d rather have bay and gark than nj and Cameron. I know war disagrees disagrees with me, but bay is such a damn good hitter, and I’d love having him behind Pablo.

Exactly. And if WAR says the Giants are “overpaying” for Bay at about $16 M/yr, then who cares, you and I are not paying Bay.
All WAR’s aside, I’d love to see one GM take Cameron over Bay with identical contracts THIS offseason.
Wouldn’t happen.

by taliesin on Nov 5, 2009 12:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Bay is not a good deal — at all — for $18M per year, unless you really don’t believe in UZR. Because if you do, he’s only about a 2-2.5 WAR player. Usually one win should go for around $5M; that deal would be paying $9M.

I know we want better offense, and Bay provides it, but he’s going to be paid much, much more than he’s worth.

by taliesin on Nov 5, 2009 12:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I know the whole “realistic” label has been talked about a lot, but even the more realistic moves i’m not sure if I agree with. Accardo is a nontender candidate for the Jays, so if he;s available for free he’s an upgrade over Valdez. Even, so the bullpen shouldn’t be a focus, unless the team signs 1-2 relievers making less than 1 mil. With as much money as you are spending, you probably assuming that Wilson and Lincecum both take heavy discounts during extensions, which probably won’t happen.

HolliBay aside

There’s not much top caliber hitters in free agency left so I suggest to just keep the team as is and plug in the youngsters in place of Molina and Winn. Addition by subtraction, right? Maybe roll the dice on a few Juan Uribe type free agents like last offseason (cheap 1 year deal and had some sort of success in the past) and hope they can have Juan good year.

Ladies and gents, my opening day lineup after some hard and lubed-filled rosterbation:

CF Rowand – Yeah I went there, Bochy is still manager so very possible.

2B Sanchez – In his few at bats as a Giant last year, my complex baseball analysis concluded that he can hit.

3B Panda – Oh hi there, surprise to see you here.

SS Uribe – Jazz hands’ back with a fresh 2 year deal, bought a new house so no more Rent.
.
1B Garko – Oh hi there, surprise to see you here instead of Ishikawa/Johnson/Beltre/LaRoche/Branyan/Snow.

LF Andruw Jones – Crazy? Maybe but he won’t command much money and would probably like to stick it to LA 18 times a year. I’m not sure if he can play left but Velez and Lewis are the only other “options”.

RF Schierholtz – Strong-armed all the competition in ST, still gloveless.

C Whiteside – Buster who? Bochy is still manager so very possible. [Cue little Posey on the bench alone]

P Lincecum – Same freak, same hair and moves to same street next to Zito’s McMansion.

Win the inning.

The guy is barely above mendoza for two years post allstar break. Best thing that could happen is that Rowand gets injured and goes on the sixty day dl. An outfield of lewis schierholtz and bowker should do, with velez and torres as backups. If u dont like velez torres as backups for lefty righty switch and defense resign winn really cheap as a late inning defender and lefty only hitter. One year contract on the cheap. I love Rowand’s grit, but he could not hit a slider if it was tossed with a beachball. Make that a Medicine Ball.
