OFF SEASON MOVES/2010 LINE-UP

There are lots of articles out there telling you what the Giants may or may not do. All of them saying different things, and a lot of them are unrealistic, or just down right stupid. Now you all have your own opinions are here are mine:

Lets make an attempt at 1B Nick Johnson, right now Ryan Garko doesn't seem like the future plan even though it was thought to be by Bochi and Sabean. And to all you Travis Ishikawa believers....shut up. We need a hitter, and thats exactly what Nick Johnson is. Lets give it a shot.

3670490528_36813ca0f0.jpg

  • Seems as the Giants are pretty interested in 2B Dan Uggla, which doesn't surprise me considering we have no power in our lineup. Uggla would be a huge upgrade in our clean-up spot. Either that or we bring back Bengie to hit in the 4 spot (thats a joke). We trade him and probably will have to give up Jonathan Sanchez and maybe a Garko or Ishikawa.

2283838271_ef203c6ea2.jpg

  • That leaves us with......

- 1B: Nick Johnson

- 2B: Dan Uggla

- 3B: Pablo Sandoval

  • Now heres the question, we clearly need Freddy Sanchez in our lineup. So what do we do?... Well some of you may not know, Sanchez has played several games at the SS position. Now, I don't know about you guys, but I would much rather have Sanchez at SS than Edgar Renteria. I would love for nothing more than to move Renteria out of the lineup, and this wouldn't be a bad way to do it.
  • Next we need a corner outfielder. Matt Holliday and Jason Bay do not seem to be options. So, we should be looking for more of a Utility outfielder who wont play everyday, but will get a good amount of at bats and be a ofeensive upgrade for our offense. This player is Marlon Byrd (or maybe even a Mark DeRosa). Coming of a big season he would be an upgrade at our LF position.
  • Sign C Miguel Olivo or Yorvit Torrealba as a starter or backup to Buster Posey until he is ready to become a full-time starter.
  • Re-sign Brad Penny

Pitching rotation:
  1. Tim Lincecum
  2. Matt Cain
  3. Barry Zito
  4. Brad Penny
  5. Madison Bumgarner
Jeremy Affeldt - Joe Martinez - Sergio Romo - Dan Runzler - Brandon Medders - Brian Wilson
Line-up:
  1. Freddy Sanchez SS
  2. Nick Johnson 1B
  3. Pablo Sandoval 3B
  4. Dan Uggla 2B
  5. Marlon Byrd LF
  6. Buster Posey C
  7. Nate Schierholtz RF
  8. Aaron Rowand CF
  9. Tim Lincecum P
Backups:
- Eugenio Velez - Andres Torres - Ryan Garko - Yorvit Torrealba - Edgar Renteria

If I’m Sabean, I don’t take the risk of Jonathan Sanchez turning into Francisco Liriano without the injuries and trade him anywhere. Also, the Giants need another starter, so trading Sanchez would mean they need two.

I had really given up on Sanchez

but that no-hitter reminded me of one thing: This guy has INCREDIBLE stuff. For most of the second half he was a good pitcher and displayed some consistency, and hopefully he can build from there. Keep this is mind, Randy Johnson was a largely mediocre pitcher until age 29 who struggled with command but had electric stuff. Sanchez is in a similar boat. He just needs to continue to build his confidence, and find his arm angle.

Renteria was average-ish defensively this year though (according to UZR). Sanchez is only -4.0 per 150 career there but I dunno… the idea of it just seems really far-fetched to me.

The above rotation has us counting on Bumgarner (and his whopping 10 IP to this point) as a piece of the major league rotation. That isn’t going to happen; and it shouldn’t happen. Sanchez represents a low cost solution and you would rather give that away so we can find a more expensive FA replacement?

You know, I told myself that I wouldn’t get into rosterbation debates because I find them boring and pointless. Most of the time, people go round and round about things that will either never happen or are too stupid to happen. You did a good job of drawing me in.

WHY IS BOCOCK?!

by Lars The Wanderer on Nov 27, 2009 8:26 PM PST up reply actions

I would rather have Sanchez than Uggla. We don’t have any replacement for Sanchez in-house. This team has maybe five guys – if you include Bumgarner – that can be counted on in the rotation. Penny will cost a significant amount of money. So will any other decent starting pitcher, which is a problem because – with this offense – we can’t abide bad pitchers in the rotation.

Joe Martinez: You are cool.
When it's all said and done, America will be remembered for three things: The Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Nov 27, 2009 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

Ok. I actually dont think Sanchez or Cain or whoever should be traded, but I am trying to make the point of why people think it would be a good idea to trade our pitching. If we had to trade someone, pitching is our best bet, and would probably get the best return. I dont want Bumgarner starting the year in the rotation either however. I dont know, Ive been backed into a corner, like usual.

This is the a little disingenuous. Since the rookies from 1995-2009 have yet to become HOF eligible and that is only with 10 years of service time. A lot of HOFers spend more than 10 years in the big.

by elGuapo on Nov 28, 2009 3:17 PM PST up reply actions

Ok. Again:

1. The Giants will not sign 2 more starting infielders. It’s not going to happen. Maybe Johnson. Maybe Uggla. Not both.

2. You don’t just “move to SS” It’s a positional upgrade from 2B, not a downgrade. You can’t just plug in your extra infielder into SS the way you can with 1B or LF or DH. The position is just too demanding.

3. Money doesn’t grow on trees. The Giants have what, 15mm left to spend? Most likely 10mm with Lincecum’s extra arbitration money? No way we get Penny, Johnson, Uggla, and Byrd for that.

by AndrewWK on Nov 28, 2009 11:15 AM PST reply actions

Konerko

Koerko, if we can’t find a left-handed platoon at first (with Garko, who I think will hit once familiar with NL pitchers but who will never be confused with JT Snow with the glove). Nick Johnson is too good (when healthy) to platoon, and never healthy enough to count on. I’ve been touting Uggla for 2 years but he cannot hit fourth. He hits 5th, and I trade J.Sanchez+ for him in a heartbeat; possibly move Freddie to third or play Uggla at first or in LF. The guy that still fits perfectly (because he might be available) as our #4 is Konerko. Problem: Even if we send Garko to the ChiSox, who else do they want that we can offer except J.Sanchez. Even Rowand, who they like, we’d have to eat $$, which we can’t. And don’t mention Dye, please.

Don't believe everything you think.

by wcovington on Nov 28, 2009 1:34 PM PST reply actions

you want to patoon Konerko and Garko? You know theyre both right handed hitters who fare much better vs lefties right? If you remove Konerko’s ABs vs. lefties he’s not great and if you remove Garko’s ABs vs lefties he’s practically worthless.
