Last free agent post i promise

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving guys. I was recently reading on Yahoo sports that the Blue jays are not going to resign Marco Scutaro and I thought he would be a nice fit for the giants. Marco Scutaro isn't a player that will blow you away, but he would help the Giants. He is very underrated, but he had a very nice season last year. he can steal bases, he is a patient hitter, doesn't strike out a lot, he's versatile, gets hits, a good fielder. Also he has a career .337 obs. He would give us a nice consistent hitter that can get on base, open up rbi oppurtunities, playing good defense. He would help this team and is a better choice than Beltre or Johnson. Beltre, well we have no idea where his power is gonna be this season. I also don't know how his hitting would translate to pitcher's park like AT&T. Scutaro's hitting isn't based on power, so you don't have to worry about decline in power because it really won't affect his hitting as much as somone like Beltre. If Nick Johnson was healthy he would be the easy choice, but the problem is we cannot afford to take that risk on him. We need to get someone who can hit and play consistently that could help us make the playoffs. Nick johnson hasn't played healthy since 2006.Also it would be a waste to spend most of our cap on one hitter when there are other wholes that could be filled. He has had sporadic injuries for most of his career. We need someone who can hit well, play defense, and stay healthy. we just can't take the risk, I think we would be better signing Marco Scutaro who can do all those things. Nick Johnson also doesn't get a lot of abs. If we were to offer him a contract, it would be for 5-6 million because of his injuries. If he was signed for that amount I would be ok with him. He is worth that. I just think that we need a proven healthy capable player, its too much of a waste offering such a risky player like Johnson and wasting all the cap. I think that if we were to be able to sign Scutaro we should sign another good hitter to improve our offense. I suggest adam kennedy. He would be cheap and was fantastic last season. i think he really will have a break out season in 2009-2010. he gets hits, can still steal 20 bases, hits above 300 obs, hits for good avg, hits high slugging percentage, also he doesn't strike out a lot.

As always I will show you a lineup if those 2 signings were to occur

Rowand  center field

sanchez 3b

Uribe left field

Pablo 1b

Kennedy 2b

Scutaro ss

catcher

Schierholz right field

pitcher

I like Johnson, but i would much rather have 2 good hitters than one. I think the production of Scutaro and Kennedy would be much greater than that of just Nick johnson

Also Nick johnson is very much pursued by many teams, if he was signed by some one else which is very possible this would be the next best option.

I like Nick Johnson I do, but if gets injured our offense would go back to being a mediocre offense. He is very injury prone and that is very plausible. Adam Kennedy and Scutaro had good productive seasons last year and were healthy. I like having 2 productive healthy bats rather than one hitter who is more productive, but very injury prone.

I like Marco Scutaro, but:

1) He’s a Type A Free Agent and would cost us our first round draft pick
2) He’s probably going to be overpaid
3) Come hell or high water, Edgar Renteria is going to be our starting shortstop in 2010.

Actually there’s some speculation that, since the Jays signed Alex Gonzalez, they won’t offer arbitration to Scutaro as he will likely cost too much. If Scutaro is available without draft-pick compensation, Sabean should take a good look. However, the Renteria Postulate demands that Edgar be our starting short-stop.

WHAT THE FUCK IS OBS? WHO GETS INFORMATION FROM YAHOO FREAKING SPORTS? OUR MANAGER IS BRUCE BOCHY, THEREFORE, EDGAR RENTERIA IS OUR STARTING SHORTSTOP. SCUTARO IS GOING TO BE OVERPAID AND ISN’T THAT GOOD TO BEGIN WITH. I ALSO LIKE HOW YOU LEFT THE POSSIBILITY OF A “POSEY 4 ECKSTEIN” DEAL OPEN. VERY THOUGHTFUL.

Also

Adam Kennedy’s OPS+ the last five seasons:

2005: 96
2006: 86
2007: 50
2008: 82
2009: 101

He was below average every year but 2009, and then he barely cracked 100. He was also -10.3 runs on defense, which was probably a fluke, but he’s also going to be 34 by opening day and his defense probably ain’t getting better.

Also, you have Kennedy playing second, thus moving Freddy Sanchez to third and Pablo Sandoval to first. In other words, Adam Kennedy is basically replacing a first baseman in the lineup. Even if he repeats 2009, 101 is terrible for a lineup slot that could be a first baseman.

Also, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OBS.

Also, in arguing for Adam Kennedy, you say he has an over-.300 OBS. Assuming you mean OBP, a .300 OBP is not good. .335 is okay. Kennedy has been above .335 once in the last four years. His career OBP is .330. This is better than the average Giant, but it’s not a selling point.

Figgins 2B

Johnson 1B

Beltre 3B

The Giants are likely to only sign 1 hitter in FA, and its not going to be a SS

"Nick johnson hasn't played healthy since 2006"

Nick Johnson had 568 plate appearances in 2009. I’d consider that “playing healthy.”

by lincecuminyourface on Nov 26, 2009 6:52 PM PST up reply actions

eh...yourself

If he missed 29 games because of injury you might have a point, but he didn’t. That’s like saying Buster Posey is injury prone because of how rarely he played after being called up. Johnson spent exactly 15 games on the DL, and the other games he missed were mostly games where the manager just didn’t play him, either because he was being rested, or because he didn’t want to play him against a lefty. Now don’t get me wrong, Nick Johnson has missed a ton of games with injuries in his career, but last year cannot be used as an example of him being injury prone.

Yeah true, but it’s not as if 15 games is an insubstantial amount. And just because someone is not on the DL doesn’t mean they are healthy enough to play (think about how many games Rowand missed due to being hurt despite the fact he wasn’t on the DL.)
I don’t know, I’m just not as sold on Johnson as many on this blog are. A 31 year old, injury prone, out of shape first basemen with limited power just doesn’t intrigue me all that much. But I guess he is the best option available, and he is capable of bumping us up from having the worst OBP in baseball to the 5th worst

Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son

by lincecuminyourface on Nov 26, 2009 9:43 PM PST up reply actions

The reason I am not that worried about Johnson missing 40 games is simple. The team has 3-5 options to fill the time with. And all those players are under 29.

Of course this being a Big Head & Sabean team they will try either Velez at 1st or Torress but that is different barrel of apples.

Nah. You should probably stop posting and just lurk around the site for a while and comment in other people’s posts. Unless you like people ripping on your posts. Lurking around the site would help you gain some baseball knowledge that you clearly lack. Adam Kennedy sucks, Marco Scutaro is both not very good and not worth forfeiting a draft pick for, Nick Johnson would in fact produce more than both of those players put together, OBS is not a stat OPS is, Juan Uribe can’t play left field, gaaaasp Edgar Renteria won’t just go away because you want him to, AT&T isn’t really a pitcher’s park, there is no salary cap in baseball and if there was 6 mil wouldn’t be most of it because we allegedly have about 15 mil to spend, and if we were to sign Adrian Beltre it would be for his defense more than his offense. And for christ’s sake, if you’re going to rosterbate, don’t produce a lineup with Aaron Rowand leading off and Marco Scutaro and Adam Kennedy hitting 5-6.
