Them's Fightin' Words?

Lincecum is not eligible for my list because he has not yet won 50 games... I do think Lincecum is an awfully good bet for the Hall of Fame. Better than Greinke? I don't think so. I know many people prefer Lincecum's greatness, but I think a lot of that is because Lincecum pitches in the National League*. And, as good and as well-publicized a year as Greinke had, I think many people STILL don't quite get how good he is.

*Just as a starting point: Opposing pitchers have had 173 plate appearances against Lincecum in his career -- they are hitting .095/.142/.116 against him with 68 Ks against eight walks -- add a little of that to Greinke's totals and see what you get.

Too close to call. Only sure thing is that they’re the two best pitchers in the game going forward.

Copying from elsewhere

Regarding that split he references:
Their respective numbers against non-pitchers:

Greinke: .263 / .312 / .416 allowed, strikes out 20% of hitters
Lincecum: .226 / .300 / .333 allowed, strikes out 27% of hitters

In 2009:
Lincecum: .213 / .279 / .301, struck out 28%
Greinke: .230 / .276 / .336, struck out 27%

I’m not saying I agree with Posnanski, because I don’t, but one of the things he may be implying is the perceived superiority of American League lineups, pitcher or no pitcher. In other words, because Greinke has to face the Rangers and the Red Sox and the Yankees of the world more often than Timmy, comparing their BAA is comparing apples and oranges.

What are Timmy’s stats when making starts against AL teams? I don’t actually know, but would be curious to see them.

His interleague numbers aren't great, but they are better than Greinke's!

Lincecum: 3.91 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, .256 / .323 / .354, 27% strike outs
Greinke: 4.36 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, .272 / .318 / .442, 21% strike outs

Lincecum’s bad interleague games, interestingly, were against the Blue Jays and…the Royals.

Also, Greinke hasn’t been very good against the Yankees thus far. 5.27 ERA in 10 games, 7 starts.

Timmy’s the better pitcher. If Greinke can replicate his season again next year and Timmy falls down a well, then they’ll be comparable. At this point Greinke’s had one breakout season and Timmy’s won two Cy Young awards.

It’s closer than that. Greinke was better this year; Tim has been better over the last two years. How you call it depends on how much credit you give Greinke for pitching in the tougher league.

With the unbalanced schedule, the league difference is somehwat offset by the fact that the AL Central is the worst-hitting in the AL, while the NL West – even with the Padres and Giants, amazingly – is above-average for the NL in terms of runs scored.

Overall, on average, AL teams scored 63 runs more than NL teams. Comparing the AL Central (less the Royals) to the NL West (less the Giants), the difference is half that – 29 runs.

by jcb9 on Nov 25, 2009 3:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s more complicated than that, though, because the AL hitters are doing it against better pitchers.

I recall reading that the difference is a quarter-run of ERA, but who knows how reliable or consistent that is.

by Evan on Nov 25, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Okay, but the point isn’t really the actual runs scored/allowed. The point is that the difference between the NL West and the AL Central isn’t as big as the difference between the AL and the NL generally.

They are both excellent pitchers

The stat difference between the N.L. and the A.L. with a large enough sample size can be 98% due to the DH, done by multiple regression analysis. There is a less than 2% superiority of the A.L. not due to the DH, but that could be a lingering effect, as guys still pitching quite good, do not have to be removed for a pinch hitter in a close game. The effect is probably quite less than 2%

What we should agree about
  • Greinke was better in 2009.
  • Lincecum was better in 2008.
  • Overall, they were about even in 2008-2009.
  • Neither one has had any injuries in his pro career, and both have proven that they are durable.
  • The are probably the two best young pitchers in the game.
