Rank Your Giants Prospects
I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone thinks about the top 10 prospects in the system before all the other blogs, sites and services start doing theirs. Admittedly, I have very little first hand exposure to these guys so my list wont be the best informed but I'll kick it off anyway.
1. Buster Posey
2. Maddison Bumgarner
3. Thomas Neal
5. Zack Wheeler
6. Rafael Rodriguez
7. Dan Runzler
8. Carlos Willoughby
9. Jorge Bucardo
10. Angel Villalona
Honorable Mention: Kieschnick, Dominguez, Joseph, Noonan
Tough to say where Wheeler fits in. I love Rodriguez line this season. Willoughby also put up a pretty silly line for a 19 y/o. Wonder if he'll be in Scottsdale this Summer. I don't know if I should have even put Angel on the list considering as it stands he wont be coming back to the states any time soon.
Willoughby's career line starting at 18.

Sorry. new here.
Am I preempting an annual prospect list generated by the board?
"…this thing which tells time."
Nope
Last year we did a board prospect list, but it was the first year. What you’re doing here is different anyways and probably a good way to start people thinking about it.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
That’s a good idea. Hopefully I’ll get off my ass this coming weekend and start it up. Maybe I could roll the review into the first vote, which should just be Posey vs. Bumgarner anyways.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
That would be awesome, marcello.
Joe Martinez: You are cool.
When it's all said and done, America will be remembered for three things: The Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Wow. No Crawford?
He’s got the glove to excel defensively at SS and we’ve seen some really great potential from him with the bat. And why so high on Kieshnick? I ask in sincerity. You probably know more about it than I do.
"…this thing which tells time."
Look at prospect number four. There is the answer to your first question. Kieschnick, in his professional season, put up a 296/345/532 with 23 homers. That is a pretty good line for a corner outfielder debuting in HiA.
Joe Martinez: You are cool.
When it's all said and done, America will be remembered for three things: The Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
And where would you guys rank Alderson and Barnes in your rankings.
Sickles had Alderson at 7 for the Pie Rats.
"…this thing which tells time."
It is sad to see Alderson and Barnes gone from the organization.
ESPECIALLY for what we got for them. A guy who can do a split but has 2 left feet, and a guy who can hit a lot of singles in a good year. but walks rarely!

Looks pretty much what i’d have aside from i wouldn’t have Runzler on there.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
I don’t usually put relievers in the top 10, but Runzler was outstanding last season and I couldn’t think of someone else who deserved a top 10 spot.
I like Runzler but i wouldn’t put him in the top 10 as relievers just aren’t worth very much unless they’re shut-down closers. I guess the best candidates to replace him are Gillaspie, Dominguez, King or Graham.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
How is he a prospect, though?
I mean, he came up, he dominated, he’s a major league reliever. He’s not really a prospect anymore.

by Giantsfan4life on Nov 25, 2009 9:54 PM PST up reply actions
Of that group, Gillaspie is the only one I would consider for a top 10 spot and his lack of power and suspect defense moved him down my list. I still think he is top 15 for the Giants. King will probably end up as a reliever. Dominguez did not dominate as a college player in rookie ball and I have trouble putting a 6th round draft choice (Graham) in my top 10 when he has never played pro ball. Runzler is a better choice than any of these.

Power prospects (most important kind)—Neal, Posey, Joseph, Dominguez, Klieshnik, Crawford
Defense/speed/OBP prospects—Ford, Peguero, Crawford, Adrianza, Noonan, McBryde, Gillaspie
Pitchers—hard to rank as MadBum and Runzler already have ML experience. Like somebody said, we’ll dig out the lower minor stats later to rank Tanner, Snyder etc.

His home K rate was substantially higher than his away K rate (22% vs 15%), I have heard that SJ has a wierd backdrop in CF that makes it harder to read pitches. He also dropped his K rate the last two months of the season (SSS, 130 AB) to 7%

Oops, meant to quote that.
I agree with 1-3. Although I could see Wheeler at 3 as well. i think 4 is too high for Crawford. I understand that positional scarcity and defensive skills raise his value. as does his AFL performance. The Ks really concern me a great deal though. I could see him as high as 5. but I’d put him more 7-8 personally.
Darren Ford at 9? Wow. Darren Ford’s probably my favorite Giants prospect. But 9? I have him more in the 15-20 range and I thought I was being bullish. I would agree that he has a top 10 upside, but he’s still about to be 25 and hasn’t even made it to AA ball yet. I really like him though and really want a speed demon in CF, so I hope you’re right.
I’m really not convinced that Dominguez will ever make anywhere enough contact to make it to the major leagues. I hope I’m wrong b/c if he figures things out he could be a star. But I’d really have to put Casilla, Stoffel (even as relievers,) J. Bucardo or Concepcion above him at this point.

by the American government, isn’t it, not the DR? They don’t want him to flee; and maybe—I’ve seen it suggested—the DR doesn’t want him to flee either, till he buys his freedom by paying off officialdom as he had to buy off the either aggrieved or extortionist family of the dead man.
yeah that’s what I mean by the Domincan Republic not letting him come back to the US, haha

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
This is really an even more than usual crapshoot this year, seems to me, because there are so many players that it’s really difficult to get any good read on at this point, particularly Villalona and Rafrod, but then also Wheeler and Joseph who haven’t really suited up yet. So with the caveat that this is totally uninformed, I’ll say:
1. Posey
2. Bumgarner
3. Wheeler
4. Neal
5. Joseph
6. Crawford
7. Kieschnick
8. Rafrod
9. Peguero
10. Villalona (if he gets back into the country in 2010)
10a. Nick Noonan (if not)
11. Jose Casilla

By the way, most recent Ask BA mailbox answers the question: should Tampa Bay have selected Buster Posey #1 instead of Tim Beckham. And BA’s answer: Yes, if they could do it again, Buster Posey should have been the #1 pick of that draft.
Back to back years of having probably the draft’s best impact player falling into our laps has got to turn into something special in a few years, no?

I agree with BA, and thought so at the time of the draft. Even better, we might have gotten the player we needed: Justin Smoak.
Officially disinterested in any outfielders from the state of Mississippi.
Smoak has a good bat, but I still believe that Posey’s the better impact player overall by far. And I’m getting very excited about an all Golden-spike battery with Buster and Timmy. If just a couple of the complementary guys can come through and be complementary guys at the major league level, that’s a very good base. But it needs to happen fast because it’s hard to believe Lincecum’s still here after 2013.

So sad to think about.
If Sabean doesn’t get a LT Contract done I just can’t see the Giants competing with the multiple 200 million dollar offers Timmy will get in 2013.
"…this thing which tells time."
Roger, what’s your take on Jason Stoffel?
Officially disinterested in any outfielders from the state of Mississippi.
One thing our organization seems to produce nearly at will is live armed relievers. Stoffel seems like yet another. I wouldn’t be that surprised to see him move the way Runzler did last year and just chew up levels.

For bizarreness of position player development, the Giants seem to have a very simple plan for relievers. Strike motherfuckers out, get promoted.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.
Elementary, my dear Watson.
Joe Martinez: You are cool.
When it's all said and done, America will be remembered for three things: The Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
You prefer Casilla to Bucardo?
I’d like to believe in Peguero’s tools, but no plate discipline and no power in low A at age 21 is just a bridge too far. Noonan’s still ahead of him, I think. Probably Adrianza too.
As a good father I probably should put Jorge in front of Casilla, and reports on their stuff is pretty hit and miss, but what I garnered is that Casilla’s velocity is a significant tick higher, and he’s always had a peripheral advantage on Bucardo, albeit with smaller IP totals becaused he’s constantly relieved rather than started. I think if they moved Casilla to SP they’d have a significant upside pitcher on their hands — better than Bucardo — but if they leave him as a RP, then Bucardo’s the better prospect.
My thinking with Peguero is that he’s the proverbial toolsy player whose power develops last. He’s had a strange American career, because they really threw him into the deep end of the pool sending straight from the DSL to the Sally. I don’t think that worked to his advantage (as he was not only demoted to the NWL, but then repeated the whole thing again in ‘09), but it does speak to how high the organization is on the player’s toolbox.
My Bucardo is better than yours.

As does adding him to the 40-man. But after all Burriss, Velez, etc., I don’t have a lot of faith in the organizational judgment there …
truth to tell…, but I’m also not with the Noonan really had a great year last year if you just look at it the right way bandwagon. Once you get past #2 or at best #5, our prospects are pretty crapshooty.

maybe true…. i was not posting it for his opinion. i was more trying to make the point that Gillaspie was generally ranked very high when he was drafted. i mean he was the one called up in Sept of 08 and yes that was a gimmick, but the fact was that at the beginning of last season, i would bet he was all over these top ten lists and that now he is not. i am pretty surprised how far he fell. after all, he hit .296/.345/.413 in the second half. it was a disappointing season overall, but just one season (and yes i know that he should be hitting in the cal league)…
