Brett Pill tearing up Venezuela...Bowker apparently scared of the country and going home
Since I assume I am the only member currently living in Venezuela I figured I would take some time to update everyone on the Giants that are down here playing winter league. Brett Pill arrived off the plane and has just been named player of the week after only 21 plate appearances with two doubles and two homeruns and a batting average of .429 with the Bravos de Margarita. John Bowker came with him, but apparently he wants to leave because he is worried about the insecurity in Venezuela, which as I white guy in Venezuela I can tell you is certainly an issue, although they are playing their home games in Margarita, which is a beach resort. As for Pill, he might just be taking advantage of some weak pitching, but overall the quality of play is quite high. He beat out Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies for the honor. Pill tearing up Venezuela is the link although its in Spanish, but it does have a nice picture of him at the plate. I posted a fanshot of another shot of him. Also, our dear Kung Fu Panda Pablo Sandoval, my halloween costume ;-) they don´t know the panda mask as well down here as in San Francisco, is set to start at the end of this week with Magallanes and Jesus Guzman is having an up and down season with the Leones of Caracas in his designated hitter role, some two homer games and some 0-5 games. All and all it looks like the Giants down here are getting some good preparation, especially since most of them are on the 40 man roster.

Brett Pill
I am not particularly a fan of Brett Pill, I guess after the last couple seasons of Giants offense any possibility of having some guy who can hit seems like something worth talking about

I think Natto’s more commenting just on the fact that you made both a FanPost AND a FanShot about Pill. For most of us, that amount of work requires a special level of dedication.

My thoughts
- Bowker’s scared of getting in a fight with those short arms of his.
- Actually, he wasn’t scared of going to Latin America until he heared Villalona made bail.
- Why the hell is Guzman DHing? If anyone could use some practice with the glove on his hand, it’s him.

Well he plays first and DH but at least in the box scores I have seen he has been DHing. Batting .278 this season…down here he is known for his bat…broke the single season RBI record for the league last year and was MVP.

If people are going to keep saying “weren’t impressive”/“Todd Linden”, I do hope you’d be kind enough to provide someone’s full season splits over the last couple of decades or so at the death for power hitters known as Dodd that massively trumped Pill’s numbers.
I’m not sold on him, but I also think he deserves one heck of a look.
Brett Pill - .302/.359/.849 at the graveyard for hitters known as Dodd, .996 fielding percentage led all EL 1B (so much for his 'defensive issues' that someone posted'), probably should have been EL MVP (finished 2nd to Cleveland's top prospect), and nary a staff mention on MCC outside of Minor Lines and almost no fanposts!
by HaroldS on Nov 23, 2009 10:25 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, the Giants haven’t had any good hitting prospects in forever, so the fact that Pill may have better numbers than them means nothing. Very simply, he doesn’t walk and he has limited power. For a 1B, you can pretty much stop the discussion there.

by oldjacket on Nov 24, 2009 6:55 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not in the same way. Ortmeier’s breakout was his first full pro season at 22 in San Jose, when he hit .304/.378/.471. He followed that with a fairly poor season in Norwich in 2004, batting .252/.352/.424. He repeated Norwich in 2005 to the tune of .274/.360/.463 with 20 home runs, at the age of 24. He still ended up playing half of 2006 in Connecticut (to a bunch of bad numbers) as well.

Dodd hasn’t been around more than one and a half decades. Opened in 1995, if Wikipedia serves me well.
It would probably be a convoluted path to take to find splits from too long ago. BB-Ref doesn’t have minor league splits as far as I can tell and I tried looking for Nick Johnson (who played with the Norwich something or others in the Yankees system in 1999 and had OPS of 1.073 that makes what Brett Pill did look like nothing) on minorleaguesplits.com but it doesn’t go back that far.
FWIW, Pill actually hit better at Dodd (.865 OPS) than out of it (.801) while Bowker had a massive home/away OPS split of .752/1.024.

Pill's Numbers (AVG, OBP, SLG)
2006 (SK): 220, 296, 359 Bad
2007 (Aug): 269, 321, 416 Okay
2008 (SJ): 266, 321, 495 Sluggin is getting better, but it is the Cal League
2009 (Conn): 298, 348, 480 Wow, that is a big jump in OBP!
It must be remembered that Pill is old (next year will be his age 25 season) for a prospect, plays first base (where offensive stats have to be very impressive to be considered a prospect), and has numbers roughly comparable to – if not worse – than Dan Ortmeier (see above). In Connecticutt as a 23 year-old, Bowker’s line was 363, 523 with 22 homers (to Pill’s 19), but Bowker isn’t a first-baseman. Also, these are minor league numbers – not MLEs – which makes Pill’s even less impressive (first season with an OBP over 325?) and show that Pill has really only had one above-average year.

.319 BABIP in 2009, compared to .301 for his career. I’ll note that it looks like his career average is brought down a lot by his poor .246 in 2006. In 2008 he had a .310 BABIP so it might not be too fluky in ’09.
by Missing Barry on Nov 24, 2009 2:15 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Brute has the splits above. I think it’s interesting that Pill’s OBP did go up quite a bit without an appreciable increase in BABiP. I’m still concerned about his relatively low (for a 1B prospect) OBP and SLG and the fact that his Cal League performance was so average when he was age-appropriate or even old for the level. Even with the definite upward trend, I’m still not sold on Pill as anything more than Travis Ishikawa, version 2.0, though I would love for Brett to prove me wrong next summer.
Joe Martinez: You are cool.

I’d call Pill a "sign and follow’ right now. Since they don’t do that anymore, I think it’s a good term to give to a guy like Pill who is really going to determine whether he’s worthwhile or not next year. We’ll just have to see if he can build on this past season or not.

Well, he certainly has moved through the system more rapidly than Ishikawa, who never met a level he didn’t want to repeat two or three times (including SS ball).
But yes, the answer is because Pill hasn’t been very good. Though come to think of it, maybe that’s not the answer, as the same could really be said of his former Augusta teammates Ryan Rohlinger, Emmanuel Burriss, and Brian Bocock, and they’ve all appeared in the majors already, plus Michael McBryde who was mistakenly fast tracked to Fresno for the start of ’09. Really, the mysteries of player promotion in the Giants system are not to be explained by logic alone.

I’ll bet you anything, Bowker’s parents did the research and freaked.
(I’m a parent and would do the same thing.)
"We're in this thing!" My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman, "Sweet Jesus" Guzman and Jesus H. Guzman.

Agree completely…I doubt I would let my child come here at this stage in the country´s history…but alas here I am and my parents yes they are freaking.

this saddens me to hear. I had such good and safe times walking anywhere in Calcutta in the 60s. And a big white guy like Bowker can not just blend in. Gun exporting is right up there with the 4 or 5 worst things the US does.
cheering for Adam Witter, who will hit bigleague dingers some day.
Still yelling "Go, Antoan"

What I am here for…I will be sure to provide more updates on all the Giants down here…not following the Dominican leagues so if anyone has any good info about the Giants there or in Puerto Rico feel free to share ;-)

Maybe that’s it: Bowker hates when Alo, Presidente! is on every channel for five hours.
