And apparently the great writers of MLB.com were on the same line of thinking as me.

Hey, good for the writers. Maybe they really are improving on their picks – Mauer got 27 of the 28 first place votes. I would have picked Jeter 2nd over Teix, but oh well, the difference isn’t that big. Bottom line, they got it absolutely right, so good job, BBWAA (for once).

Man, thats 3 of the big 4 awards I have agreed with. And the odds of it going 4-4 is overwhelmingly high. There is no way anyone can justify Pujols not being NL MVP.
Well done writers.

I actually Utley and Ramirez gave Pujols a good fight, without anyone noticing, but Pujols is still the right choice.
Man, Utley’s last five years have been insane, and he’s going to finish them without ever coming close to winning an MVP. He’s basically been Jeff Kent at his peak:
Kent, 1998-2002: .307/.378/.548, 142 OPS+.
Utley, 2005-2009: .301/.388/.535, 134 OPS+.
Kent’s numbers are slightly better when you consider Utley’s park, but Utley had better defense and baserunning. Even if you go to the more basic stats it’s impossible to tell them apart:
Kent averaged: 100 singles, 42 doubles, 4 triples, and 29 home runs per season.
Utley averaged: 102 singles, 39 doubles, 5 triples, and 29 home runs per season.
Kent averaged 12 more RBI’s, Utley averaged 15 more RS.
If he keeps it up for a few more years, I think Utley should have an outside chance to make the HOF.

but Utley had better defense and baserunning
And not just by a little bit. Utley’s arguably been the best defensive player in baseball, AND arguably the best baserunner in all of baseball over this time….
I think Utley at his peak is better than Kent at his peak by a sizable amount.
by Missing Barry on Nov 23, 2009 12:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
One amazing stat this year that I think got almost no attention is the fact that Utley was 23 for 23 in stolen base attempts. As far as I can tell, that is the record for most steals in a season without being caught. That is amazing.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Nov 23, 2009 1:05 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I believe that is the record. According to this, the previous record appears to be 21.

His UZR’s have been consistently great over his entire career, but I seemed to remember that he’s not considered a great fielder by the fans and scouts. He’s ranked as the 4th best fielder by the FSR, though, so maybe I’m wrong.
but I still don’t think he’s the best defensive player in baseball, not even arguably. Best 2B maybe, but he’s not better than the best defensive SS out there.
Best baserunner? I don’t see how he’s even close. He was great this year, before that just slightly above average. Do you really think he’s as good as Ichiro/Pierre/Figgins/Reyes?
I agree that his peak is better than Kent’s, but the difference isn’t huge. 5-10 runs.

Well, when you’re talking about best defensive player, I meant in terms of the value he provides – the difference between him and others at his position is pretty much as large as anyone in baseball. SS’s and CF’s are better fielders than 2B, though, as you pointed out. As for baserunning, he seems to bounce around a lot in the EQBRR ratings at baseball prospectus. I dunno what to make of that. This past year he was the 2nd best base runner, by their metrics, in baseball, though. At his peak he wasn’t quite the hitter Kent was, but he more than made up for it in other ways. I would probably say 10 runs is a fairly accurate estimation. Whether or not that’s “sizable” is pretty subjective…but the point is, Kent is a HoF’er…meaning Utley is damn good.

I wouldn’t vote for him, though. I feel like a guy should have more than one good year before getting MVP consideration, to avoid the Zoilo Versalles MVPs.

You wouldn’t put him in your Top 10, though? And I disagree with that, completely – if a guy has a fluke year…it still happened, why shouldn’t he get recognized for it? If it’s a fluke UZR or something where we don’t know for sure he really had that good year, that’s a fair point, but with something like hitting….those things happened, why should the person have to be an established star to get recognition for a great year?

by oldjacket on Nov 23, 2009 8:39 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That’s all I was hoping for. I don’t think straight WAR values should decide the MVP or anything, I’m fine with Zobrist not being top 3-4, but he definitely deserves votes. I mean, Kendry Morales got more votes than him for gods sakes! Zobrist was a much better hitter, played wherever his team needed him (which resulted in him playing a tougher position than Morales overall), and played better defense at all those positions! What else do voters need! There wasn’t a single thing Morales was better at than Zobrist! (Obviously being on a team that makes the playoffs makes a player twice as good or something)

They have made plenty of horrible selections, but I can’t think of any instance in my lifetime of them blowing one this obvious. You could argue that picking Ivan Rodriguez over Pedro Martinez in 1999 qualifies, but that was due to some writers making up their own rules about pitchers not being eligible for the MVP, so I regard that as a separate sort of procedural idiocy.

With The Existance Of The Cy Young I Think This Should Be The Case
These two awards are of equal value in my judgement and since the Cy Young is only for pitchers the MVP should only be for position players.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Nov 23, 2009 1:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs

But I see logic behind one and none behind the other. To me is just does not make sense to have an award for pitchers only and not have an equal award for positon players only.
by giantsrainman on Nov 23, 2009 1:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I actually agree with not voting for a pitcher, for the same reason grm does. They have an award for top pitcher, already, so it makes more sense to me to have an equal award for position players…
by Missing Barry on Nov 23, 2009 1:23 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs

Eh those awards don’t have the same prestige. Plus they give a lot more than 1 of them out, so it’s not nearly the same feat to win it. :_
