Could someone provide a quick translation or recap?
If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

Are You Guessing (Hoping)?
Or do you speak Spanish well enough to know?

I do not however asked my mother who is fluent in spanish and she said Villalona has been absolved of the crime.
I know enough to get a pina colada and a lady.
The heading “Angel Villalona libre de culpa” roughly translates to "Angel Villalona free of fault.

Could This Not Just Be Civil Which We Already Know?
Could not the criminal charges still be pending?
by giantsrainman on Nov 22, 2009 5:59 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I asked that question and she said he is free of charges and fault. With that in mind would expect him to be getting a visa soon. Maybe we can coin him a new nickname? How about OJ ?

The hawt newscaster said “el joven sale libra de toda culpa,” which I’m pretty sure means ‘the kid was freed from all guilt.’ It sounds like he got off.

OJ being a prime counter example.
As a fan I’ve never faced a situation like this. It seems like there’s a likelihood that he made choices that led to a man’s death, but I can’t with 100% certainty that he pulled the trigger. It is possible that he was fingered simply b/c AV was the most wealthy and famous person there. We will never know.
if he’s reinstated and begins to live up to the hype, how would you feel about supporting Villalona as a Giant?

OJ WAS FOUND GUILTY IN A CIVIL COURT!

But Not Guilty In A Criminal Court!
The point that is being made makes the mistake of assuming DR civil courts are like US civil courts with a lower standard of proof then a criminal court. If the civil case was dismissed in a US civil court it would indeed be a reasonable assumption that there would be almost no chance of a guilty finding in a criminal court. However, apparently in the DR this is not true as many times false charges are filed in both courts just to attempt to get money from the one being charged. This money has now been paid. If the criminal case proceeds and he is convicted then and only then should we believe that he is guilty. Otherwise we should jsut believe that this was all about the money.

I believe murder charges are filed whether or not the victims kin approve
Are the results of Civil Suits are inadmissible in criminal court? Also he OJ doesn’t fit what he said

The You Did Not Understand What I Was Saying
I am talking about the burden of proof being different. If the lower standard of burden of proof found in the civil courts is not be met then how would it be reasonable to expect that the higher standard of burden of proof found in the criminal courts would be met?

I’m thinking in terms of the family/victim being paid off.
I agree with what you said in terms of quality of evidence.

You might not be 100% certain OJ pulled the trigger, but if you go back and read about all the evidence against him, I think you’ll find you can be certain beyond a reasonable doubt…

I’m certain that OJ was a murderer. I was referring to Angel in the second paragraph. I failed to make myself clear.
I only brought up OJ as an example that one could be found guilty in one of the trials and not the other. I guess this is the opposite of what’s mentioned above, but still I think it’s possible for one to be found guilty in a criminal trial even though they settled civil charges with the family.
Back to Angel … I really don’t think they had much of a case beyond eyewitnesses many of which are no longer in play.
Check out this link.

Blog of a grad school student who follows Dominican baseball. I don’t know how accurate his info is, but if it is the prosecution really wouldn’t seem to have much to go on.
A couple things I found interesting.
1. The writers point about extortion in the DR being rampant and the payoff not necessarily being a sign of guilt.
2. Can’t find the gun and can’t even prove Angel ever owned a gun
3. Seat fight as the only motive
Seems like a pretty difficult case for the prosecution by American standards at least.

The video is from around the same time as the article, but the AP story was fairly late to get out, compared to things posted here, and latin media, so it still may be newer. In any case, the language of ‘libra de toda culpa’ seems contrary to the ap report.

A few details
The problem is that even though the family asked the judge to drop charges the prosecutor is determined not to let it go and now that Angel´s visa has been rejected, I am not sure what we can expect from him this winter. In reference to the phrase libre de toda culpa, which does translate free from all guilt, that was used from the video it was mentioned by the reporter but what was said was that the family of the person who was killed will not be going after Angel and will not be assisting in any investigation persued by the prosecutor. So the government will have to continue with the investigation without the assistance of the family who simply made a statement saying that Angel was not the murderer. In all likelihood the whole case will probabably fall by the wayside with the deal that was made…however will Angel get a visa if he is not officially declared innocent?
