Why Jon Miller? Why?
ESPN Votes for their AL MVP
I can understand the one guy who picks Teixeira over Mauer (RIB EYES!), but really Jon? This is twice you have hurt my feelings.

For a guy as informed as Miller, this is just baffling. Stupid Calm Eyes…

What was the other one?
Picking Verlander for Cy? that was bad too.
Its funny because fuck the dodgers
Bochy for MOTY
If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.
it’s refreshing to see so little stupidity among the ESPN “voters”

Miller loves the Yankees. I listened to most of the playoffs on the radio at work, and Miller was calling the games as if he worked for Steinbrenner.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

his mind must be warped from watching so much Giants baseball
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
i’ve never really gotten the sense that Miller likes sabermetric stats. he’s always seemed more old school to me, and I think it probably counts a lot for him that Jeter’s team actually won a championship.
this is my theory, anyway.
He talks about OPS a lot, but that’s about as far as he goes.

Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis
I tend to think Miller is quite open-minded about sabermetrics — at any rate, a lot more open-minded than a lot of BBWAA folk. He’s not going to become a SABR spokesperson anytime soon but I suspect he has more than conversational familiarity with why W-L record, for instance, isn’t a good measure of a pitcher’s value. The AL MVP vote however I don’t know what’s going on, both with his vote or why it’s controversial (I didn’t follow the AL at all this year).
I am a little put off though by he (and Flem, sometimes) pronouncing “OPS” as if it were short for “Operations”.

Well, the controversy is that Mauer was better than Jeter in pretty much every single offensive category, and did so as a catcher.

Miller Didn't Even Vote For Jeter - He Voted For Teixeira

Yeah, maybe Miller was just being mischievous. I just looked up the numbers and Mauer’s were better in both the traditional and the more SABR-approved measures, so if Miller thought the MVP were really about the best individual offensive player than you’d have to think he would have picked Mauer whether he overvalued BA/RBI/HR or not. So it’s gotta be something else.
If everyone agrees that an award is about the same thing but it’s just a matter of what measures you use to assess a player’s candidacy, that’s one thing. But I think the MVP debate is broader than that and, within limits, I think that’s fine. Whatever. Hey! Our guy is a rebel! Rejoice.

Nope.
Look at the page. Miller voted for Jeter. It was Steve Berthiaume who voted for Teixeira. Everyone else voted for Mauer.

Jeter was not even the mvp of his team.

Yes, yes he was. Normally I’m in the Jeter is overrated camp, and I don’t think he’s ever been the best player on his own team before, but in 2009, Jeter was the best player on the New York Yankees. He had a hell of a year, possibly the best year of his entire career.

Jeter had his best year since 2006 but his best year may have been 1999.

Offensively, yeah. There might have been enough on the defensive end to make up that value, though. Not arguing this point as a sure thing, just raising the possibility.

I don’t think you need sabermetrics to see that Mauer was better than Jeter. You can just take a quick look a their AVG/OBP/SLG and see it’s not even close. And even if you go by AVG/HR/RBI, Mauer leads by 30 points of AVG, 10 HR’s, and 30 RBI’s, and he did it with better defense at a tougher position. Mauer did miss a month, but still ended up with more than 600 PA’s.
Picking Jeter is just bizarre.
HA HA HA LOOK AT ME I'M ALL HAPPY AND STUFF NO REALLY CAN WE STOP WITH THE COOKYMAN IS SAD JOKES?
:-) :-) :-)
Well
a catcher that bats .365, that pretty much happens every year so I can see why Miller was bored by it. Plus Mauer was the inspiration for the guy in the Major League movies that can’t throw back to the mound. Right?

Mauer Missing A Month Could Have Something To Do With It
Jon could be thinking if missing 4 starts is enough to drop Carpenter behind Lincecum then maybe missing all of April was enough to drop Mauer behind too. However, If he thought this way it should have been Jeter not Teixeira that got his vote.
Jeter’s not an awful selection. I think it’s wrong, but it’s not terrible. You could defend the position if you had to.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Jeter had a pretty awesome year. I would have voted Mauer, but Jeter’s fine.
More broadly, I don’t really care if everyone starts using sabermetric stats. Guys like Morgan who get freaked out that other people use them bug me, but if Miller wants to evaluate players his own way, thats his prerogative.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.

Miller’s choice of Jeter sure was better than a real voter’s choice of Cabrera.
