Giants add four to 40-man roster
Per Baggs:
Friday was the deadline to submit reserve lists and the Giants protected four players from the Rule 5 draft, adding 1B Brett Pill, OF Francisco Peguero, OF Darren Ford and RHP Kevin Pucetas to the 40-man roster.
Pill, a leftright-handed hitter, worked with new hitting coach Roberto Kelly Hensley Meulens earlier this month at AT&T Park and his inclusion was not a surprise after a banner year at Double-A Connecticut. He wasn’t considered a top prospect out of Cal State Fullerton and he’s still got to prove himself at every level, but he’s hit gobs of doubles while thriving in two pitcher’s parks (Connecticut’s Dodd Stadium, and two years earlier, Augusta’s ballpark). He’s also rated a better defensive first baseman than Travis Ishikawa, which is a nice compliment.

Brett Pill isn’t very good. There, I said it.

Neither is Ford.
Pucetas isn’t any great shakes either, but at least he actually stands a chance of sticking on a major league roster for a season, which I can’t say of Ford or Pill.

I’m sure he has way more important things to do than to check out blogs, and after how hard he has worked to get where he is, I really doubt if he cares about your opinion of him. Seems like there a “few” people on here who actually called this. I think they must be more informed than some of you other posters.

Believe a Bowker/Pill comp might be a little more appropriate. We can compare their AA seasons in the same Eastern League.
The rap on Pill prior to the 2009 season was that he did not have power. The buzz was that if/when he ever converted those doubles into HRs he would arrive as a prospect. Believe Pill arrived as a prospect in 2009.
He now needs to build on his success in the same way John Boy Bowker did. Hitting in the hitter friendly PCL should improve on Pill’s power numbers. If so then he could be knocking on MLB door.,
by wilriv21 on Nov 20, 2009 10:37 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Bowker in Connecticut: .307 / .363 / .523, 22 HR in 587 at bats.
He was better than Pill across the board and almost a year younger. Plus not being a first baseman helps. Although the Giants tried to make him into one.

Yes I know their numbers. And their career paths. Both were thought to be underperforming and then had their breakout seasons in AA. Bowker then followed up his big AA with a very nice AAA season. Pill needs to follow that same successful path.

I don’t understand all this “he’s a better defender than Ishikawa” stuff.
From what I’ve heard, he was mediocre at best until this year, when his fielding percentage skyrocketed.
Wonderful. As if fielding percentage were anything close to an accurate representation of fielding ability.

Nah, his glove was his best attribute even in college.

by BigO on Nov 20, 2009 7:05 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I’ve always kinda liked Snyder but it looks like the Giants took him out of the rotation this year. He was pretty tough on left-handed batters.
by xanthan on Nov 20, 2009 7:08 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
They did take him out of the rotation...
…but that’s all the more reason to protect him. Easier to hide a reliever off of a Rule 5 draft.
It was a solid move for Snyder. He averaged nearly 2 1/2 innings a stint in relief, which is fairly long, and he finished the season with four consecutive starts. That also makes it hard to judge his starting stints. As a starter, he allowed 15 earned runs in 26 1/3 innings (5 starts). As a reliever, he allowed 16 earned runs in 70 2/3 innings (29 relief appearances).
I like Snyder. A lot. He’s also someone I think is the most likely to be taken in the Rule 5 draft.

Like you, I’m a big fan of good CF defense. I’m also more apt to believe in a late-bloomer if it’s coupled with good athleticism.
I wouldn’t even go so far as to claim that Ford even warrants being believed in at this point. He’s done just enough to show that he has a shot of reaching his upside.

Ford gets walks too. I ran through the Giants minor league system and he was one of three Giants who had OBP more than 90 points higher than his average (excluding short-season play). The athleticism is a plus, obviously, as something that doesn’t drop off as you ascend leagues. I would put him above Pill on the excitement level for these reasons, but I’m not excited excited.

Well in their minor league careers so far they’ve hit around the same (Ford has a slightly higher wOBA) with Ford having a much higher walk rate and Pill having a much higher strikeout rate. People will value Ford higher because a CF with great defense is much more valuable than a 1B with great defense if they are similar hitters.
Personally I’m not all that excited about either of them, but Ford is a lot more interesting than Pill.

I was worried about Neal given he was a 36th rounder in the 2005 draft, but hadn’t realized he was a draft-and-follow and didn’t end up signing until 2006 (and I presume short season doesn’t count as the 4th full year in the organization.)
As I have said many times before, they gotta do something about the 40 man and make decisions on the Frandsens and Lewises of the world.

Yes – Molina/Aurilia/Johnson/Miller are gone, and I may be missing someone else.
Today’s moves are all about the Rule V draft; I believe the 20th is the last day to protect someone, and then you always want to have at least one spot open if you want to claim another player.
Where it gets more interesting because of their mess of 40 man management is what happens if they’ve offered arbitration to Molina and he accepted. I don’t think he’d go back on their until the arb session, which presumably if they have a brain would be after the draft proper (which is like the 10th or 11th.) Someone more versed in roster mechanics can probably clear that up.
It’s unlikely we’ll see any FA signings now until after the draft, since Bocock clearly has something on Sabean in his black book.

Lowry Too.
We finished the season with 44 (four of which were on 60 Day DL). 9 were eligable and filed for free agency (Johnson, Penny, Lowry, Howry, Miller, Molina, Aurilia, Uribe, and Winn) taking us down to 35. Thus adding these four takes us ot 39.

The Marlins are having problems coming to grips with their 25 year old pitching ace, J. Johnson. He will be a free agent on or after 2011.

I would say I don’t understand the hate on Pill but I do. We all have been hurt so thoroughly before. Me, I’m interested, more than I ever was by Ishikawa. But I’m a romantic.

I don’t think anyone hates Pill. I just don’t think he’s any good, for about a million reasons.
One of which being that he’s not very good.

I like how people always automatically think we hate someone if we don’t consider them a viable option for the major league team.
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

For example, if I met Julio Izturis, I would totally get into a fight with him solely because I don’t think he will ever be a productive major leaguer.

It’s not hating on someone to realize that his upside is present-day Ishikawa. Which means, as soon as Ishikawa is making more than the league minimum, he’ll be cut and Pill will replace him.

I could see Pill making some MLB monies with a career as a pinch-hitter/defensive replacement.
If “hating” a guy consists of believing he can make a couple mil as a player, then I’m full of hate.

Peguero
I’m really surprised about Peguero. He’s only been in the US leagues for two seasons and prior to that two seasons in the DSL. That would have him coming into our system at 18 in 2006. Had he been an American teen drafted in ‘06 he wouldn’t be eligible for Rule 5, and I thought Latin American signees had even longer protected status yet. Color me confused on that one.

He's actually been in the system for a while
I think he was a signed in something like 2004 or 2005, but was hurt for the first year or two.

Interesting. I couldn’t find a sign date for him in any of the usual places, so I assumed his first year in the DSL was his first year with us. Thanks.

I like Peguero but I’m wondering if the hype around him is Adrianza lite.

Think the hype on both is ridiculous. Adrianza = the latin Bocock. Peguero is Andres Torres.
by Hobbes2d on Nov 21, 2009 10:42 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Which makes the hype makes total sense. After all it’s the Giants organization that is the originator of the hype. They’re high on all 4 of the people you just named.

any guesses on who we could lose in the Rule 5 draft?
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team take a flier on Craig Whitaker to see if he can make their roster as a reliever.

Craig Whitaker is a minor league FA as of this week. No need for anyone to take a Rule 5 flier on him. That said, there’s no way in hell he could make a major league roster.

other guys dropped from minor league contracts
san jose giants site had a story a few days ago on the guys given free agency:
Mike Musgrave, Trey Webb and Craig Whitaker,
more pitchers Kelyn Acosta, Matt Kinney, Osiris Matos, Kelvin Pichardo, Ronnie Ray and Ryan Sadowski,
catchers Steve Holm and Todd Jennings, infielder Jake Wald and outfielder Mike Mooney.
I am figuring Matos was procedural or something and he will come back to us as minor league free agent. Maybe Webb too, as we have had him several years and Giants supervised his journey from shortstop to mound. And I expect Holm to be back. But…other teams can wave dollars at them.
