This guy gets it
Wow, it's interesting to see an outsider put down into words pretty much everything we at McCovey Chronicles are hoping for. We are not alone.

Eh, that’s not really what I’m hoping for.

I mean
The parts about what we should do with the parts we already have is good but is saying “The Giants should sign one of the two best free agents on the market!” really that wild a thing to say? You could say that about any team in baseball.

Not the Yankees
The Yankees should sign both of them.

I’m really hoping Schierholtz improves on his .302 OBP. He was doing OK before the DL time, after which he didn’t play regularly.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
Don't hold your breath
He walked about 5% of the time in the minors.

Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis
He also had OBP’s around .360 his last two seasons in the minors. If we get half that, he’d be acceptable. And really, he’d just have to not slump to .267 to attain that.

That was almost entirely sustained by BA though. I think the full season stats on Nate (just as with Velez) are a pretty good snapshot of what we should have expected from him. The issue of his irregular playing time causing his numbers to go down, though, is really a macguffin. It was his PH numbers that caused his stats to look as good as they did last year.
As a sub Nate hit .339/.354/.435
As a starter he hit .247/.288/.390
It seems entirely likely to me that sticking him out there every day down the stretch would have made his overall numbers more putrid, not less.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
Also, keep in mind our AAA team is a pretty nice place for hitters – stats in the Pacific Coast League inflate batting performances.

He advocates playing Lewis in right field.
Which makes for TWO bad reads.

It’s pretty obvious the writer of the article on the Giants doesn’t really follow them with any regularity. Fred Lewis has a pretty sweet swing, but his defense is awful. I’ve seen him in right field and he looked completely lost and his approach in left field is not much better. I don’t have the answer in how to improve his fielding.
If you looked at the stats, Garko seemed like he would fit in, but then if you watched his presence at the plate… it was not very impressive.
As for signing Bay or Holiday ( I don’t think he wants to come to AT&T anyway), I say forget them. I know what Sabean said about not trading, but I would keep the door open for any opportunity.
I think Neukom is going to have to bump it up a little, maybe not over 100 million, but over 90… I know what they’ve said, but they have the money. Let’s just spend it more wisely than we did with Rowand and Zito.
The team needs two more with good to high on base percentage with some punch. I know there out there. The question is; what will it take to get them?
Sign Penny, just use some imagination in writing the contract.
it resumes…

Ugh, the non-sarcastic Fred Haters are making there way over here now? Do you know what kinda of fielders LF and RF are populated with? Bums like Carlos Lee, Raul Ibanez, Adam Dunn. Lewis might look terrible fielding, but with his speed, he’s actually above average. (That said, I do have hesitations throwing Fred in RF at AT&T)

I wish the Giants would just trade Lewis, so I never have to hear the pro/anti FLew discussions again.

The Lewis vs. Schierholtz Conundrum
The whole Lewis v Nate thing is pretty fascinating and the answer always seems to come down to defense. Stats people seem to think that Lewis’ defense is not bad but Giants fans who watch the games think they’re nuts.
Personally I think the debate is more about a fan’s values. Lewis is undoubtedly more talented and athletic. But he just doesn’t seem to care. Schierholtz might not be able to tell a fastball from a slider but he’d probably give his first born to be able to.
As a fan I put so much feeling into my team that I become enraged at players who don’t care. That’s why watching Lewis flounder makes me sick.

I can’t agree with that. Lewis is a proven hitter at the MLB level, Schierholtz is not. Also, keep in mind the “stats people” do watch Giants games, too, we completely understand where fans are coming from with Fred’s defense. He makes mistakes all the time and will generally do things regularly that drive a fan crazy. I don’t blame anyone for disliking that. It’s just frustrating because the normal fan doesn’t even give thought to what makes Lewis above average – because it really is the fact that his peers are really, really bad. When Lewis takes a terrible route to a ball – most of his peers could take a perfect route, and they’d have the same chance of getting there as Lewis after his figure-8 path. These guys are bad. Good hitters who are bad at defense get stuck at 1B or corner OF. This is a very important point that many fans just don’t think about when they see Lewis drop a routine fly ball.

a) So you’d rather have a dumb, bad gamer than a good player? Hi, Brian.
b) “But he just doesn’t see to care.” I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: baseball isn’t our national pastime: coming up with vague, unsubstantiated reasons to bash Fred Lewis is.
c) “As a fan I put so much feeling into my team that I become enraged at players who don’t care. That’s why watching Lewis flounder makes me sick.” HI GUYS MY COMPLETELY UNSUPPORTED AND SUBJECTIVE EVALUATION OF THE MOTIVATIONS OF A MAN I HAVE NEVER SPOKEN TO = PLAYER ANALYSIS.
Fucking a. I don’t mean to be rude, despite the RAGE meme, but this is a terrible comment.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.
