"San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is struggling in the Arizona Fall League, but our own Jason Grey cautions Giants fans not to worry about it too much, writing that "more than one scout has questioned why he's even here," that he "looks very tired" and that Posey "still is likely to be the Opening Day catcher next season and can have success right away.""

Despite all the rumblings about him, hilariously, “not being ready offensively”, I’m guessing he’s mostly down there to work on his catching.

Struggling, really? To me it looks like Posey is just heating up. Hit his second HR today. Pretty much each level he’s played at he takes a couple weeks worth of games to adjust to that level and then he lights it up.

A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.

K-Law also mentioned in a recent chat that he looked “exhausted.”

by KCE on Nov 2, 2009 1:18 PM PST reply actions

Exhausted?

From what? He is very young. I do not see Derek Jeter tired. Jimmie Rollins looks fine. Shane Victorino can still play and Johnny Damon can go first to third on a steal.

Catching is harder than any of the positions those other guys play.

Well then...

Look at Carlos Ruiz and Jorge Posada.

I would imagine Derek Jeter, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Johnny Damon are far more used to playing a full major league season’s worth of games (plus) than a guy in his first year out of college would be.

Calm Before the Storm

This part was interesting…

Speaking of Posey’s future within the organization, some saw his call-up in September – a move the Giants and GM Brian Sabean originally had been quoted as saying would not take place this season – as a sure sign that Posey, 22, would be the Giants’ starting catcher on opening day in 2010.

But Posey didn’t see as much action as many thought he would – just seven games total, to be exact – and Evans explained why that was.

“Well, we were in the middle of a pennant race at the time and (starting catcher) Bengie (Molina) was the centerpiece of our offense,” Evans said of Molina, who was nursing an injury when Posey was called up but returned to the lineup shortly after Posey arrived. “It just wasn’t the right time to get Buster (some) at-bats.”

Of course, now that Molina’s contract is up and with Posey tapped as the future of the organization, those at-bats for Posey may soon increase 10-fold, right?

Well … maybe, maybe not, says Evans, who added that as of right now, the future of Molina has yet “to be determined,” even though Molina’s agent has said publicly the 35-year-old MLB veteran catcher wants to return to San Francisco for at least two more seasons.

“No updates (on Bengie’s status) at this time,” Evans said. “Only time will tell (how it will all play out). There’s a lot of different scenarios in the school of thought right now.”

Posey, meanwhile, says he’s trying his best not to worry about whatever front-office decisions are made in San Francisco between now and February. In the meantime, he’ll just continue to do what he’s done since Day 1: Keep his head down and play baseball.

“Nothing has really been communicated to me so far about their plans,” Posey said. “I’m just going to go out, work and try to get better. And whatever happens, happens.”

Posey was able to spend some time during his call-up with Molina, characterizing the duo’s interaction as a “good relationship.” Posey even said he often found himself picking Molina’s brain while the two sat next to each other on the bench.

“He answered a lot of questions for me; we talked strategy or about calling pitches. We got along just fine,” Posey said. "As for (what the team’s plan are with Bengie), I really don’t have any idea. I know it’s great to have a guy like around, but I also know that the Giants have a tough managerial decision to make.

“That’s just baseball.”

If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

if they sign Bengie for two more years, I’m never watching a Giants game again until he’s gone.

(Unless they, like, do it like $6 mil first year and $1 mil second year with the understanding that he’ll be a backup the second year. And even that’s iffy.)

Bengie agreeing to back up Posey? Hard to see that. If he re-signs with the Giants, it’ll be on his terms and that (more than anything) will tick me off.

I’d view such an “understanding” with Molina about the same way I’d view and “understanding” with a toddler that he can have ice cream for lunch if he eats vegetables for dinner. Not only would I not believe Molina, but I’d consider the person who struck the deal to be a fool.

Sabean might re-sign him for 4 if he finds out that you won’t watch Giants Baseball for the duration.
