McCovey Awards: Most Informative Poster

It's time to vote for the category of Most Informative poster on McCovey Chronicles. These people would be able to come up with all sorts of great stuff to write in a Fanpost to get it past the 75 word limit. As you can see from the list, I am not one of them. Uh... make voting get now!

If you haven't voted for the Newcomer award yet, be sure to check the past Fanposts for that and RAWK DA VOTE. And again, don't rec this Fanpost to avoid knocking out more deserving recommended Fanposts since there will be a few more of these voting ones.

I happily voted for BruteSentiment, whose information I admire and whose judgments I trust; and I always read jponry with serious interest. But where on the list is xanthan—or has he won this award before and thus became ineligible to repeat? His detailed, scrupulous, and cogent posts are a must for me. If he’s eligible and doesn’t know whom to vote for, that must be out of modesty or puzzlement at not being on the list. (Also, on occasion, Fla-Giant is worthy.)

3) The whole interior of the island is pretty much strip-mined and only the coastline is inhabitable.

There are always two countries that I have to think about for a long time before I get them. And they’re two different countries every time. So I’d forget Tuvalu and Vanuatu one game, then I’d forget Samoa and Tonga the next game, then I’d forget Palau and Nauru the next. It was always annoying and I could never blame anyone else for my dumbness.

I spent most of my time trying to figure out how to spell Eshkol.

In 1954 Ben Gurion retired from politics and Sharett, than Minister of Foreign Affairs, replaced him. He was a pretty powerless PM, and two years later Ben Gurion returned and was re-elected. Sharett was also the PM during the Lavon Affair, in case you’ve heard of it, though he didn’t really have anything to do with it.

Eshkol was elected in 1963, and was the PM until his death in 1969. He was Prime Minister during the Six Day War.

Shamir, on the other hand, did nothing, so I’m surprised you remembered him.

I appreciate everyone’s contributions, but I had to go with Brute, who really stepped up his game this season – to our great benefit.

"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."

A race for the most also-ran, which is eerily like last year. One of these years they’ll be no one left to vote for and it’ll be our moment in the sun. Or dark, as the case may be (this is why I didn’t get nominated for Most Amusing).

I think it’s funny that by now practically all of the things that caused voters to see McGovern as some silly naive radical – opposing the Vietnam War, demanding amnesty for draft evaders, supporting the Equal Rights Amendment, (supposedly) supporting women’s right for abortions – are, by now, part the consensus, and yet his image hasn’t change. The majority of the American people now agree with McGovern’s platform, but a silly radical will remain a silly radical, regardless of whether or not he was right.

I agree, but it depends on your point of view. I’m sure a lot of conservatives feel the same way about Barry Goldwater.

Well, we could argue about opinions, but that wasn’t exactly my point. I’m not saying people should agree with what McGovern wanted, I’m saying that they already have, that his far fetched idea are now part of the consensus. If he ran for presidency today, and said " I think getting involved in the war in Vietnam was a mistake, I think abortions are legal under the current constitution, I think granting amnesty for Vietnam draft-dodgers was a good idea, and I think no one should be discriminated on the account of sex," people would say “well, obviously, what else you got?” I mean, “amnesty, abortions, acid” is what scared so many voters in 1972, right? But Roe v. Wade was in early 1973, and Ford granted amnesty about a year after that. Just two years after the elections, two of McGovern’s most radical ideas were part of US laws.

Which is to say

I don’t see the Goldwater comparison. He opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, was a big supporter of McCarthy right to the end, and talked about nuking Russia all the time. I think he’d considered even more of an extremist if he ran today than he was then.

I think McGovern is largely seen as a joke these days not because of his positions, but because was crushed so resoundingly.

With that having been said, I have heard him described as an effete northeastern liberal, which is pretty funny considering he’s from South Dakota.

It’s not really the case, though. Nixon was actually really popular in 1972. Right after his inauguration (Jan 1973), his approval was at 67%. (For comparison, Obama was at 69% in January of this year.)

I know it’s hard to understand now, but white middle-class people really liked NIxon. And that was most of the country back then.
