Do both Cy Youngs signal shift?
Rob, I gotta ask, since you don't ever answer the question... Does it signal a shift in what? You never get beyond talking about win totals.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

I just imagine the last few lines of that reading like this:
KLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!

I’m going to say not really. It just seems like the the BBWA just gave votes to writers that are more reliant on stat (like KLAW) because there weren’t enough qualified beat writers in each NL city. Adam Wainwright did end up with the most first place votes.

There is a shift happening but it’s very gradual and I don’t really think we’re seeing a true change in the way these awards are being voted on yet.
What happened this year was pretty simple: 1) Greinke was so dominant the voters couldn’t give it to anyone else and not look like idiots, regardless of the fact that he was pitching for the Royals. 2) Wainwright and Carpenter split the vote. No, not the St. Louis vote, the stupid vote. All the voters out there who didn’t trust new stats went different directions. The “WINZ” crowd went with Wainwright, the “ERA” crowd went with Carpenter. The voters more willing to look a little deeper, and maybe a few who really value strikeouts, voted for Lincecum. The stats just happened to line up in just the right way this year for an actual enlightened decision.

I almost couldn’t care less if the voters keep on screwing up those awards, as long as it doesn’t affect any Giants in a negative way.
Case in point- if Timmy is 23-6 next year (by some freak occurrence involving the Giants scoring 2 more runs per game in his starts than anybody else’s) and he wins the Cy Young again but isn’t the best pitcher, I’ll actually be thankful that most of the people who make these decisions don’t have their act together yet.
