So…

You think this will come up in the arbitration hearing?

Sandy Koufax, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Tim Lincecum.

And none of those guys did it before 25, let alone in their first 2 full seasons.

Timmy could go into the arb hearing 2/2 in Cy Youngs.

Schulman’s “aha” moment came when he realized that Carpenter was more dominant in the second half of the season. On the other hand, Lincecum was more dominant in the first half of the season. Why does this matter?

Because lazy sportswriters need excuses for when they can’t make a decision and actually flip a coin. Here’s an idea, Henry: when two guys have very similar rate stats, maybe you go with the guy who started more games and pitched more innings?

by dmunk on Nov 19, 2009 9:15 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Missing Barry had very nice point in the fan shot. One even die hard old school fans should get. The IP difference between Tim & Carpenter is equal to half a seasons work for a top notch relief arm. When you’re not only equaling your closest competition and still doing a good part of another’s man job on top of it that is a very Alpha male/ Silver back of the troup trait.

I will just mention the Cards only won 3 games more than the Gaints and that was with an extra helping of NL Central teams so what exactly is this "down the stretch pressure cooker " thing anyways?

Who’s brain did you bring me?

by daveinexile on Nov 19, 2009 9:57 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s about the importance of helping your team reach the playoffs. Not saying that should be the deciding factor, but the ‘down the stretch’ thing is about performing under the mental pressure of a playoff hunt.

Utter frustration and futility.

by Johnny Disaster on Nov 19, 2009 10:17 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

For there to be play off hunt though doesn’t there have to be more then 1 other team over 500? And the one other team in the NL Centeral that finished over 500 did so by a massive 1 game. Not much a race there.

Who’s brain did you bring me?

The announcers on the awards show just brought up the NL Central

They talked about how great Carpenter pitched within the division (specifically W-L record). Amazing, considering how bad the rest of that division was.

by dprodigy19 on Nov 19, 2009 10:41 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

This

The Cardinals won the Central easily. If the Giants had been in the Central, there’s a pretty good chance we would have won it (beating on the Reds, Pirates, and Astros some more? Yes please). We contended with the best team in the NL and the Wild Card winner; even as a 3rd-place team, we weren’t that much worse than any division winner, and we had to play two of the best teams in the NL a lot. Besides, we were in a playoff race until mid-September anyway.

by quincy0191 on Nov 19, 2009 10:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I probably replied to the wrong comment… this is regarding the why does first half vs. second half matter. Whether you agree or not, that’s the reason for considering second half stats more important.

Utter frustration and futility.

Carpenter edges Timmy by 1 first-place vote. I still have my pitchfork from the other thread.

I don’t mind him mentioning the Cubs. Look at the structure of half conversation half the times he does though. He is measure teh Gaitns against those clubs ( 70’s -80’s Cubs) as if they are some sort of model worth copying. That i do mind. Well known caller for Bruce, per Wikipedia
  • Annie baby (from San Francisco), “the official first lady of Sportsphone 680”. She is the voice of “pound it, pound it, pound it”, she also claims she had sex with Robert De Niro
  • Smirnoff (in Palo Alto), the shows “unofficial researcher” of Sportsphone, he became the official researcher when he joined Sportsphone 680 as an intern in the summer of 2009
  • Discreet from the Streets (of San Francisco), who gives very good information and is very entertaining, also calls The Third Shift on Fox Sports Radio
  • Salty Balty from Clovis, known on all KNBR shows for his negativity and criticism of all teams (especially the Giants)
  • Bob from San Jose, a very smart football caller, “the most dominant football caller of Sportsphone 680”
  • Barfighter in San Jose, who starts every call pronouncing Damon’s name in a Spanish accent
  • Sportacus on a cell phone, who consistently offers thought-provoking perspective and a good deal of humor. He ends every call by Damon asking “any declarations?” and him replying “I am Sportacus”
  • Scott in Santa Cruz, who starts every call with " What is up, Admiral Bruce!" Sadly Scott passed away in 2009.
  • Mr. McBride, a fellow former-ESPN employee, now a “real estate mogul” in Denver, and “the official brotha’ of Sportsphone 680”
  • Fry in Antioch, the frequent Tuesday Trifecta caller.
  • Smokin’ 13 Year Old, who frequently calls in during baseball season to talk about Giants minor league prospects, and runs away from walrusman
  • Andrea Mallis, a sports astrologer and a big Giants fan, her website is virgoinservice.com
  • Ronaldo from Palo Alto, “the official soccer caller of Sportsphone 680”
  • Russ from Lafayette, is known for his long yet insightful rants about the state of Bay Area sports.
