All-time favorite SF Giants: closer
Well, it's taken some time for me to get over the first-base poll. Not that Will Clark is a poor choice. On the contrary. It just seems Willie McCovey is the logical choice, being as the website is named after him. That's all I have to say on the matter. Long live The Thrill.
Results of the first-base voting: Will Clark 45%, Willie McCovey 32%, J.T. Snow 20%.
This is the poll for the all-time favorite San Francisco Giants closer. To avoid ridicule, the imposition of over analysis, and the like, please vote for your FAVORITE player at each position. It doesn't necessarily have to be the best, meaning if Dan Gladden is your fave in CF, it's your prerogative to vote for him over Willie Mays. Regarding WRITE-IN VOTES ... do it! Click "other", put the name of your favorite IN THE TITLE OF A COMMENT.
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

I also liked Scott Garrelts and Steve Bedrosian, for the record. Although Garrelts had his best season as a starter. He was a huge part of the 1989 team but often gets forgotten. Hell, even at the time he was forgotten – he lead the league in ERA and WHIP and finished sixth in Cy Young voting. In a year when a closer won the Cy, too.

I also really like Greg Minton. He made my all-time Giants team a couple of years ago.
His 1982 season for the Giants is nuts:
123 IP, 108 H, 42 BB, 58 SO, 30 S, BB/9 3.1, K/9 4.2, 195 ERA+
Mmm, groundballs.

269.1
I think he still holds the record for consecutive innings pitched without allowing a home run: 269.1 IP, which is just nuts. The streak extended from June 1, 1979, through May 1, 1982.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

Does “HFS” mean you want a link?
If so, I went back to my old 1986 Giants media guide. That lists the record as 269.1 IP. It states the record began after a home run by catcher, Joe Ferguson of some team, and that the streak was broken by another catcher, John Stearns, of the Mets. There’s also this link (scroll down past halfway).

I voted for Moffitt just because I wanted him to have a vote. Not only did he throw a slider that made right handers look silly, but for a couple years he was the more likeable half of one of the only lefty/right closer tandems in baseball history (with Gary Lavelle). Plus he was Billie Jean King’s brother. What’s not to love.
But really Moonman was my favorite favorite.

Beck
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2007/06/25/SPGRFQL4H51.DTL
Beck enjoyed a beer and a cigarette. He had a glass boot, and after home games, he would fill the boot from the clubhouse beer tap, light up, and kick back. Not surprisingly, his weight was often a concern for the Giants. A yearly spring tradition was a story on Beck titled something like, “Beck’s weighty issue.”
He took occasional stabs at conditioning programs, most notably when he pitched for the Red Sox late in his career and got himself absolutely buff.
“I got down to 9.2 percent body fat and blew out my elbow,” Beck said. "So I said, ‘(Screw) this, give me some grease and donuts.’ "

I would go with Nen because I’ve seen him close for SF the most (and quite successfully as well) but Beck is a very close second – who could forget his signature arm swing and that 1997 Dodgers-Giants epic game where he got out of the bases-loaded no outs situation that lead to Brian Johnson’s lone career highlight.

Rod Beck and Robb Nen are 2 of my all-time favorite Giants, regardless of position. Both of those guys gave so much to the team, were totally abused and they still went out there. Just thinking about either one is an emotional experience.

I’ll never forget Robb Nen’s slider from Hades or the way he left his arm on the field trying to will the Giants to a World Series title.
Joe Martinez: You are cool.
When it's all said and done, America will be remembered for three things: The Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

Even though Nen was our best closer
Beck has to be my favorite. The guy was just so special. Too bad he is no longer with us.

Surprised to see that Nen is ahead.

Dustin Hermanson?
Joking….
I chose Nen but I loved Beck too… especially one plate appearance where he struck out on three straight swings.
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all

Stu Miller
Most of you are too young to have seen him but it was so hilarious that someone so small and with such soft stuff could get so many people out that I have to rate him as the most fun. He didn’t just win, he drove opponents nuts.

Gary Lavelle
This is not researched at all and surely age-biased, but I judge closers on the amount of nerves they leave me left with after their appearances.
Emotionally, I just remember Lavelle as being the best at quiet late innings.
"The questions are so stupid. I don't believe in rivalries. I don't believe in curses. Wake up the damn Bambino, maybe I'll drill him in the ass."

This is one the rare polls I have participated in. I think I’ve done 2 since this the last All-time favorite was here.
"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

Has to be Nenn, Fire on the Water intro music and the dude cost himself the rest of his career in an effort to try to get the franchise to the promise land…

Smoke on the Water
The fire is in the sky.
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.
