What I Would Do With the Roster
Hey guys I’m new to this site, so be gentle on my first post.
I know last year was a total drag with the first 100 loss season in franchise history, but I think that we have a lot of the pieces to be contenders right away. No joke. Here’s how we get back to the playoffs:
-
Trade Brenly for Dan Pasqua -- Brenly had a good season, but he's over 30 now and he's one of the few players with any trade value. Pasqua doesn't have a place in New York, so they'd likely part with him.
-
End the David Green experiment. Sorry, but it's just not going to work. The Giants need a big bat until Will Clark is ready in a few years. Solution: Mike Aldrete, Jim Gott, and Mark Grant for Bob Horner.
-
Trade Dave LaPoint, Chris Brown, Jose Uribe, Phil Ouellette, Randy Bockus, and Dan Gladden to Baltimore for Cal Ripken and Floyd Rayford. The Orioles need pitching, and Uribe helps make up for the loss of Ripken. Obviously, we have to part with Chris Brown, who is probably the closest thing this team has to a cornerstone of the franchise, but Rayford helps minimize the loss.
-
Start Ron Roenicke. See if his OBP is for real.
-
Trade Chili Davis and Vida Blue for Ron Oester and Gary Redus
My lineup:
CF - Ron Roenicke
2B - Ron Oester
1B - Bob Horner
SS - Cal Ripken
3B - Floyd Rayford
LF - Dan Pasqua
RF - Gary Redus
C - Alex Trevino
SP - Kelly Downs
SP - Mike Krukow
SP - Atlee Hammaker
SP - Roger Mason
SP - Bill Laskey
RP - Scott Garrelts
RP - Mark Davis
RP - Greg Minton
RP - Jeff Robinson
RP - Mike Jeffcoat
What do you guys think?

But if we trade Uribe, what will we chant when the shortstop drives a runner in?

Fielder is okay, but the Blue Jay who I really covet is Willie Upshaw. .275 hitter last year, 30 home run potential, veteran. Maybe we could do Krukow and one of our young stud catchers, Matt Nokes or Alex Trevino, for Upshaw AND Fielder. Fielder is young and although he doesn’t look athletic, I hear he played some outfield at UNLV and anecdotal reports about his outfield defense are very positive.
Just imagine the lineup:
1) Danny Gladden CF
2) Manny Trillo 2B (.270 hitter just a couple years ago, due for a rebound)
3) Cecil Fielder RF
4) Willie Upshaw 1B
5) Chris Brown 3B
6) Joel Youngblood LF (I believe his .270 comeback season was for real, even with 4 HRs – hitting sixth here he’ll get plenty of RBIs even without power, since he’s so clutch)
7) Johnnie LeMaster SS (former #6 overall draft pick, my pick for a breakthrough year in 1986 – from what I hear he’s not in Cleveland’s future plans, so we could really buy low on him and bring him back to Candlestick where he belongs)
8) Matt Nokes or Alex Trevino (whoever we don’t trade) C
I believe this could be one of the best lineups in the division.

I believe we really need to pursue the very best young players in the game. While Will Clark might be okay down the line, he is less than a season removed from college ball and has not yet reached the “magic level” of 200 minor league games, so he can’t possibly be ready.
Instead, we should use him as trade bait for an established Major Leaguer who is still young and improving. For this, we have to look to the Chicago Cubs and their young, stud shortstop, Sean Dunston. Dunston was the #1 overall pick in 1982 – which means he’s one pick better than Will Clark, AND he has more experience. Just looking at Shawon Dunston’s rookie season may not look too impressive – .260 batting average with 4 Home Runs and 11 Steals. However, look at his second half: .287 with 3 Home Runs and 6 Steals! Clearly, in the first half he lacked seasoning and grit (hit .194), but in the second half he turned it around and figured it out, an from here on out he’s only going to get better! If he can continue to improve at the same rate, in his first full season with the Giants, he should hit .378 with 45 Home Runs and 25 steals – imagine that!!!!
If we keep Clark, well, look at Dunston’s first half, when he hit .194 – that’s your upper limit! Like I said, Clark was a lower pick than Dunston and he has less experience, so there’s no reason to expect he could even do as well as Dunston in the first half, let alone better.
Obviously, the Cubs won’t do Dunston for Clark straight up. But maybe we could sweeten the pot by throwing in some more minor league talent. Some overrated all-glove, no-hit guy like Robby Thompson should get it done.
(Side-note: I really wanted to advocate throwing in Matt Williams, since he could take over for Dunston at short with the Cubs, but he wasn’t drafted until the next season. Curses!)

I have just met you and I love you.
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Kim Batiste would have been in every position.
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

I don't like this idea
Ripken is not going to stick at short in the long run, and there are big questions about his durability.

Bonds spurned the Giants in 1982. I don’t want this bum on my team.
"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

Tom McCraw is a horrible hitting coach
He’s a career .246 hitter for Pete’s sake! what does he know about hitting!
I know he doesn’t have much to work with but someone needs to take responsibility for this sorry offense.
