I've often wondered
If Torres isn’t better than we’ve been giving him credit for.
Is there any reason that he shouldn’t start every time we’re facing a lefty?
Give -peace- Ryan Garko a chance.

I really don’t know what to make of Torres. He’s seems pretty volatile to me. His track record is too weird (for me) to try and project him with any comfort. I think he could either be a nice 4th OF again next year or be out of the league.

I don’t know… before coming to the Giants he had almost 300 career MLB at bats of:
.210 / .258 / .276
With the Giants (at 31 years old), he had fewer than 200 at bats of:
.270 / .343 / .533
However, in the interest of not splitting samples, his MLB totals are (in 455 at bats):
.232 / .290 / .372
However, his 8 year AAA totals (about 2000 at bats) are even worse than his small sample goodness with the Giants:
.276 / .351 / .410
Personally, I doubt that at 31 he blossomed into a better hitter than he really ever had been at any level. And even that’s not quite fair because his AAA numbers do trend upward quite a bit once you get to 2006. His defense is good and can make up for some regression. He can likely also be maximized offensively in a platoon, so his regression wouldn’t necessarily be precipitous.
But he has a long career of not being very good. He’s going to be 32, coming off of the first success he’s ever seen, and that success came in fewer than 200 at bats.
I am extremely leery of that player. I can see arguments being made for him continuing somewhere near his 2009 numbers, but I can see many more arguments being made for him just being terrible.

I think what we can all agree on is Torres is just really hard to get a read on. There’s some much of his past that simply contradicts itself, I just have no idea what to make of him…

When Franchez goes down in April this might be the biggest f@uck up in awhile, being as there were so many better options at 2B that would have been easily attainable. God damn it.

And his pretty UZR bullshit numbers won’t be any good then either.
Sorry about that, I really don’t like F. Sanchez. Not one bit.

I Did't Like The Trade Either
But that said, their is no real good reason to expect him to brakdown in 2010 other then plain bias against him because Sabean aquired him.
by giantsrainman on Nov 15, 2009 3:21 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He has been hurt the last 2 years. There is a lot more reason to excpet a brake down then an healthy years from him.
I look at the Reds floating Philips or the perennial Uggla rumors think they traded a lot of ceiling for a floor that is not necessarily all that sound.

He Was Hurt Last Year Only
2008 was just a down year performance wise as he started 131 games and had 608 PAs. In addition, the injuries he had last year are the type of injureis one can expect full recovery from.
by giantsrainman on Nov 15, 2009 3:37 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t give a shit that Sabean acquired him, that has zero to do with it. The fact is he’s a pussy. Period. Wouldn’t matter what roster he was on.

I don’t really get it. If the guy is injured, he shouldn’t be playing. Unless you think Aaron Rowand playing hurt his whole career has benefited his teams?
Get on him for being injury-prone (although that’s arguable outside of last year), but the macho bullshit is just that.

This
If you’re playing through injury because even hurt you’re the best option that your team has that is one thing, but if you’re just trying to prove that you’re not “a pussy” that’s just stupid.

Never tried to imply that he should play hurt. Implying that he breaks too easy and was a horrible choice given the options that were there.

/Fred Lewis stuff ahead
I was looking at StatCorner’s park-adjusted wOBA numbers and Fred had a .340 something adjusted wOBA. I don’t think StatCorner includes SB/CS like Fangraphs does, does it?
by xanthan on Nov 15, 2009 7:55 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Nah
It includes ROE’s though. And I think their adjustments are based on park factors for each component, though I’m not sure if they use multi-year data or single-year data for those park adjustments.
