Hows Bout Marcus Thames
The Tigers have released Marcus Thames, and after looking at his numbers I can't get it out of my head that he could be a perfect fit here. Here is where my love is coming from. A career average of a HR every 15.3 plate appearances. That my friends is crazy power. Better than anyone that is being talked about, Nick Johnson (35.0), Mike Cameron (28.1), Matt Holliday (23.9), Adam LaRoche (23.8), Jermaine Dye (22.2), Jason Bay (21.1), Russell Branyan (17.2), whoever. His pure power numbers match up with people like Howard, Pujols and Fielder. He's legit. Plus, as someone who is coming off an injury season, he should be amazingly cheap. We're talking in the $2-3 million with only a 1 or 2 year commitment range, those are Juan Uribe afterthought type numbers. In 2008 he hit 25 HR in 384 PA. And last year before he got relegated to a DH against lefties roll, he hit 9HR in 139PA (15.4, right on average). I just can't imagine how someone who started last season as the regular 4 or 5 spot guy in the Tigers lineup would not be a massive upgrade for the GIants. Am I crazy for thinking this should be a no brainer type move. I know the basic reason not to sign him. Veteran guy who will be 33 and is not a great fielder that Bochy might play even if he's a disaster. But just the thought of having real power to back up Panda with almost no risk, wow. Someone talk my out of this are get on my bandwagon.

I think the Giants should just sign every free agent and released player on the market. Every player that doesn’t make the 25 man roster should be sent to Fresno. This will prevent all the other teams from improving and guarantee the Giants a playoff spot. The payroll will be bigger than the deficit, but at least it’s not my money.

For the right price and if he was serious about playing 1st base then maybe. Still think the odds of Johnson doing good things is way better. Same goes for Branyan and Delgado.

I have an even better idea
Take the Opening Day results, and multiply their stats by 500. Then assume that each player will perform to those results. Hey guys, Pablo Sandoval is going to hit .500! With no home runs and no RBI! And Bowker’s going to draw 500 walks and strike out 1000 times! Rowand’s going to swing at 1500 sliders that are two feet out of the strike zone….
Now I’m sad.
by quincy0191 on Nov 14, 2009 10:40 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Funny you should bring up Torress.
Age 25 season Torress is 220/263/298 in 70 ISO ( SLG –AVG) 185 PA’s.
Bowker in age 25 season 194/ 247/ 373 with a 179 ISO (SLG-AVG) in 73 PA’s. Bowker -because we are talking about such small sample sizes – had only a slightly higher rate of making outs but more than double the power of Torress. Advantage Bowker.
Nate’s age 25 season 267/302/400 with a 133 ISO (SLG-AVG) in 170 PA’s. Nate had a higher contact rate. Nate produced a outs at a significantly lower rate than Torress and Nate had almost 90% more power. Advantage Nate.

Think about what you’re saying. You can’t honestly think that if you tripled Torres stats that’s what he’d put up, can you? That would be pretty neat if it worked like that, but it just doesn’t, for obvious reasons.

What are you talking about?
It totally does. Take a sample of any hitter’s stats over x ABs, and then multiply it by y where x*y=500. You can perform a similar procedure if your stats are over a certain number of games, plate appearances, etc. For example, Barry Bonds hit two home runs on Opening Day 2002. Barry Bonds played in 143 games in 2002. As expected, Barry Bonds hit 286 home runs in 2002, breaking the single-season record he set one year previously by 213.

I really think people are a little too harsh on you, and I feel for you because of that. However, you should also take the hint and work on your grammar, and research at least a small amount before throwing out your opinion on what the Giants should do.
Either way, it’s the internet, and people will always give you shit for anything, so don’t take any of it personally. That is, if it bothers you in the first place :P

Well, there’s that and the whole lack of “netiquette” thing. Most people don’t just barge into somebody’s house, classroom, or place of business and start blithering. So why do it on an established blog? Common courtesy suggests that maybe you get to know the place a bit, there are rules (both written and unwritten) – figure out the ambiance of the place (well thought out posts, grammar, spelling, and sarcasm rule the atmosphere around here) before you start to post.
Posting on McC (except for game day threads) is more like turning in a term paper than passing notes to your buddy the next aisle over. Yes, it’s smuggy and elisty but considering the stupidity and vapidness of most of the rest of the internet we kind of like it this way.

In fact I would rate it as more several times more important than using spell check. To repeatedly choose to not use reply is like someone sitting down next to you, chew with their mouth open and then they lean closer to you to talk –while chewing – breathing crumbs all over your face. As blogs go this is a pretty prestigious one, and I don’t see any problem with the established posters being critical of stupid ideas. The court of public opinion is what keeps this place from becoming the comments section of Youtube for the most part, if you say something dumb people will and should tell you it was dumb.
