How about Austin Kearns?

If the Giants don't acquire a big power hitter in the outfield during the offseason, what would you think of the Giants signing Austin Kearns? He's a 30 year old right handed right fielder who has had injury problems with his thumb (in 2009) and 'loose bodies' in his elbow (in 2008). His glove is pretty solid, and his career offensive stats are above average. Obviously there's some issues concerning playing time for John Bowker, Fred Lewis and Nate Schierholtz with a signing like this, but it makes a little sense because they don't have a right handed player in the outfield besides Aaron Rowand.

I thought

rosterbating was when you posted your ideal lineup/rotation/bullpen/bench.

I’m just dropping an interesting name here.
Everyone’s been doing it!

Neither of those two injuries...

Are all that big of a deal.

And even with his crappy play, his OBP (last year) was higher than Randy Winn’s and Aaron Rowand’s (among other Giants).

Once again.. Not saying that he’s worth a big signing.. Just a ST invite.

Some players hit their peak or stride when they hit thirty… well he lost his peak a couple of years ago. The players we have right now are just as good (and that’s not saying anything). I’m still holding out hope for Bowker.

“I’m still holding out hope for Bowker.”

Me too.
I guess I was just bringing up Kearns as like a Juan Uribe type of signing.

It seemed as if everyone here thought Uribe was done in the offseason… But it turned out that he still had something left in him.

And it makes sense.. Cuz he was only 29.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Nov 13, 2009 7:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well I'm not saying give him a

2 year deal for 4 or 5 million or something like that.

Spring training invite, in my opinion, would be a good idea.

I’d give Kearns an ST invite at most…

We don't need any more outfielder

Unless they’re going to make a big impact.

Give -peace- Ryan Garko a chance.

Minor League Deal with a ST Invite would be ok

Low Risk/Possibly high Reward type move but don’t rely on him for anything and if he fails he could go to Fresno

The more I think about this idea...

This year I am not so fine with that even. I look at the Ex Grizzly crowd on the 25 Man and I see Pill, Neal (before Zod!) and Jolly Roger Kieschnick did alright in A+ and realize most of these guys are Corner Outfielders. I would rather have the spot open for their uses not block by a 30 year old cast off.

Heck with Big Head back for the next 2 year Downs might hit his way out of Fresno only to have the Big Head insist he learn to play LF to get playing time.

That's true but they could do what they did with Joe Borchard this year

IE Have Kearns for half a year and then cut him when Neal (more likely) or Roger is ready

Hey guys

I have this crazy idea. It’s going to seem a little radical, so brace yourselves. Instead of signing some reclamation project outfielder who will probably crash and burn as Bochy writes his name into the lineup card every day, JOHN BOWKER. Cheap, brimming with potential, under the tutelage of his clearly genius minor league hitting instructor, and an outfielder. My god, it’s like we found Marginal Upgrade Outfielder, only a few years younger, for a lot less moneys, and he could improve! Now that I think about it, it seems so obvious that only a total idiot running the team would prevent his promotion and only a complete fool managing the team wouldn’t go into Spring Training expecting him to be the starting left fielder!

Never mind.

I just watched that movie recently after downloading parts of Nightmare Revisited. Being 10 when you see it for the first time does not do it justice. Also the album is great.

No way to know how intact his tools are after two years of injury and crappy play. You wouldn’t want to go into the season counting on him, but he’d be good competition/platoon partner for Schierholtz in right, if we can’t come up with a legit starter.

Before the offseason is up, I’d like to see a right-handed fourth outfielder. Kearns would be fine on a non-guaranteed deal. But they won’t sign anyone because Velez pretends to hit from the right side.

I still can’t believe someone ( Padres?, KC?) have not grabbed that guy stuck him into the OF. I am not saying he would be an All Star but he should be nice cheap, limited pain time sponge for a team with OF issues.
