Yeah, that’s not a good idea.
But such certain reporting: the Giants “appear to have emerged”. That sounds like some good, hard information there.

Scott Boras is Johnny Damon’s agent. Maybe this will prevent the Giants from signing him. We can only hope.
"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

that's actually reassuring
Heyman is like the biggest Boras media leak anywhere. It’s just as likely Boras just wants to create the perception of a hot market for Damon as it is there’s any actual, solid interest from the team.

this is exactly right. Boras wants to sucker the Yankees into thinking someone else is interested. Heyman is the guy who falls for this crap every time.

It could be because Sabean plays everything close to the vest so Boras leaks it knowing he’ll neither deny or confirm it.

TableSetter
If Sabean can get him on a Renteria like contract they should consider. The Giants need some table setters so Sanchez can hit third and Sandoval hit cleanup. Much less than investing in Bay or Holliday.
by wilriv21 on Nov 12, 2009 3:21 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Apparently Damon doesn’t want to accept 2yrs/$20M from the Yankees, so no, a Renteria contract is not likely.

If he really a "table setter" when he'd clearly be the second best hitter AND power hitter on the team?
This is like when the GIants got Rowand and insisted on batting him 5th because he was a “prototypical #5 hitter.”
Granted, he turned into the prototypical #8 hitter, but, he was clearly the team’s best bat at the time (and for the entire first half of the season). Sadly, much like Rowand, a sudden calamitous decline is in the cards should Damon move to from one of the friendliest parks for LHH to one of the most hostile.

Would attempt to sign him with the idea of Damon hitting second, stealing about 20+ bases and scoring 100+ runs.

The San Francisco Giants, in an effort to re-bolster their impotent lineup, have once again looked to the crop of thirty-year-old free agents in the decline of their prime.
During a phone call interview, Brian Sabean, GM of the Giants, made the following comment:
“We need a steady outfielder that will bring a veteran presence to the younger players. Johnny has played for a lot of winning teams, and we look forward to him bringing that mindset to this clubhouse. At the end of the day, we needed a big bat, and seriously…Have you SEEN Fred Lewis play?”

Don’t really understand the magnitude of the anti-Damon sentiment, he’s a good player and probably the 3rd best OF available. I know the chances are that he won’t be available on a reasonable contract, but he’d be a decent pickup for the right price.

At the right price
Which will never happen. The Yankees MIGHT be involved in bidding for other outfielders, they WILL be involved in the bidding for Damon.
Also, his power was aided greatly by his home park, and will be greatly inhibited by ATT. Bring him here and he may not crack double digit homers.
And double also, showing interest in Damon while not showing interest in Cameron, who is both a better player and likely to get a fraction of the money, would be exactly the kind of stupid mistake we fear/expect /accuse Sabean of every offseason.

Well i agree he probably won’t be available at the right price but people seem to be acting like he’s not a good player. Obviously it depends on what the Yankees do, if they truly want him back then he’ll be back there anyway, he’s more of an option if they decide to go elsewhere.
His power numbers would certainly go down but that’s why we use park factors. Also, his numbers were still strong in previous years so it shouldn’t be a huge issue.
Who said we would show interest in him & not Cameron? Sabean doesn’t divulge much but I’m sure he’d be similarly interested (or not) in both.

I’ve read some good points on why Damon’s offense may not translate the way the park factors say it will. Park factors are backwards looking to adjust for value – but there are definitely cases where they don’t acccount for specific skillsets that fit certain parks better or worse (whcih doesn’t matter when you’re just looking at past value). Pretty sure a lot of Damon’s power is pull power (and he’s not exactly hitting monstrous HR’s every time), and that’s helped greatly by the Yankees stadium and won’t translate well at all to AT&T. It could be his power does more than simply go down – it could vanish altogether.
by Missing Barry on Nov 13, 2009 9:09 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well perhaps his power won’t translate as well as park factors suggest, although it’s difficult to say accurately. He’s not a player who only relies on power though as he’s put up OBP of .375 and .365 the last couple of seasons.

Like i mention using UZR from one season isn’t very accurate. He’s been above average defensively (in LF) over the last 3 seasons. And if it comes with a wOBA of .376 then it’s worth having a below average glove.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
by GiantFan on Nov 13, 2009 10:04 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He wasn’t a good defender before that either, though. Of course, he was below average as a center fielder, which is different than being below average as a left fielder, but it’s still not GOOD.
His UZR/150 as a center fielder, 2004-2008:
2004: -8.9
2005: -18.1
2006: -14.3
2007: -7.6
2008: -36.1
Those last two years were in not very many games, but still, overall, it’s clear he wasn’t a plus defender.

It’s mostly two things:
A. His defense is really slipping, even in LF
B. He made $13 mil last year, so he’d have to take a massive paycut to be worth it.

A) Well his defense was bad statistically this year but hes probably better than that. Also he was still a good player despite the bad defensive numbers.
B) Well aside from the Yankees no team would pay him that much and so he’ll have to take a pay cut anyway.

He might be better than that, but he’s pretty old. It’s dangerous to explain away a slump season as a fluke when you’re talking about guys in their late 30’s.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
by rotorueter on Nov 13, 2009 9:14 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
True he is, I don’t know what caused the slump (as I’ve not seen enough of him defensively) and it might be age related. A jump from a UZR/150 of 11.6 to -12.1 looks suspicious though and so i wouldn’t want to take either number as accurate.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
by GiantFan on Nov 13, 2009 9:28 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
UZR is averaged against the league. His age could be one part of it but new better defenders making bebuts this season and youner of’ers improving there defense can also cause his UZR to drop. But that is a huge drop
say hey nation is the Ralph Nader of McC.-Xanthan
by say hey nation on Nov 13, 2009 9:30 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
More importantly, one year of data in UZR has serious issues, and we might not even be looking at a “slump” as much as seeing some sample error. I would estimate Damon to be below average (maybe somewhere around -7 UZR/150 or so?) based on regressing his UZR numbers, but he just really doesn’t have enough data to really tell (since he shifted from CF to COF recently). The one thing I am confident in is that he’s likely to get progressively worse as he ages.

To me the problem here is UZR is a stat that needs a lot innings to be accurate. Like 1000’s of innings or we could be just looking at a slump. At his age however one realy can’t wait for those 1000’s of innings because any slump can be the new baseline for his skill. That last line makes me lean towards to old trueism “Better to lose a player a year tooo early than a year too late.” or in this case 2-3 years too late.

3 seaons of UZR roughly equals 1 season worth of offensive stats in terms of accurately measuring “true talent level”, and we know even one season of offensive production can vary a decent amount…so yeah, it’s just really hard to make any confident guesses about Damon. His athleticism does give me some hope, though, as that will generally help him age well and should help keep him at least adequate as a corner OF (despite the fact that he throws like a 7 year old schoolgirl).

I thought I was anesthetized to any bad news after 8 Warrior games, but little tidbits like this open the flood gates and have me bawling like a recently wedgied 4th grade nerd.

Yes
I spoke with a member of the San Francisco Giants management Thursday evening in regards to the rumor that the organization had interest in free agent outfielder Johnny Damon. We were told the following. "You can go to any bookie and bet we will not sign Johnny Damon."

True, but it doesn’t say whether you’d win or lose that bet.

Johnny Damon used to play for the Red Sox
Who have a RF fence about as far from home plate as can be. Damon did very well there, and it Oakland before that. Who is to say he wouldn’t do well in Phone Company Park? His biggest strength is OBP anyway.
We nearly won the WC with a horrible offense. He would be an upgrade at any corner OF spot no matter how you slice it.

Dude have you ever been to Fenway? Hitting it out to RF is not difficult. The wall is about 3 feet high, right down the line it’s really, really short, it just gets long out towards CF (kinda like our stadium), except again, the wall is still nice and short. As long as you’re pulling the ball, you’re good and you’ll get plenty of cheapies. The ball also seems to travel decently well there, as opposed to our stadium where it dies (especially to RF). I recently read some stadium effects stuff that put our temperature factor at the most suppressive for offense in all of baseball.

He just needs to hit, and Pablo can hit the HR.

If he's playing in left field, he should hit home runs.
I realize that it’s the last two seasons have lowered our expectations, but lets not lose sight of reality. Don’t settle.

I want Jason Bay
But right now we have Eugenio Velez in LF. Damon surely can at least do that, and probably have a higher OBP. I know what left fielders are SUPPOSED to do but I want improvement however we can get it.

Sadly, I think Velez is a much better fielder than Damon at this point.
