Posey raising eyebrows in AFL - can someone summarize?
Anyone have an Insider subscription? I'd like to know what Jason Grey has to say about Posey. He said a few weeks ago that he looked fatigued.

It looks like everything about Posey is available for free:
Buster Posey, Giants: As I mentioned earlier in the AFL, Posey is clearly fighting the effects of fatigue here after a long season. However, it still is quite likely that he’ll be the Giants’ Opening Day catcher next season, and he can hit for average with homer numbers in the teens right out of the gate, although his home park certainly won’t help his power production.
For the record, this makes me more nervous that the Giants will run Posey into the ground, ala SIRM.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

He’s just not that ready.
Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

Where is he playing winter ball?
In a rush to get the kid some experience and near the magic 300 minor league games threshold the organization has had Posey play in every league since his signing. Why the rush? Let him begin the 2010 season with Steve Decker at AAA Fresno and get some more playing experience. Do not want SF to mess with Posey’s development and rush the kid the way they yo-yo Matt Williams.
So will Posey be playing in Venezuela, Mexico or Puerto Rico this winter?

Wasn’t it you who was fretting when Sandoval took a few days off around Christmas last year? I may be mistaken, but I definitely remember someone all worried about Panda spending time with his family around the holidays instead of playing winter ball.

Ah yes, the “magic threshold” not reached by Joe Mauer, Ivan Rodriguez, or Matt Wieters…

Even Wieters played like 230 games, a significant number more than Gerald… the names you list with less than 300 games are pretty special players – did any of them come up with well under 200 professional games? 300 is actually a good rough number, but I consider 200 to be an absolute minimum.
Utter frustration and futility.

according to BBRef, Wieters played 169 minor league games, fyi. not sure about winter/latin leagues. Posey has something like 125. Just for fun, here’s the list of career-games leaders among catchers; click through to see their minor league careers.

You are correct regarding Wieters, I misread the table on milb.com…
Of the catchers on that list who shouldered that workload at 23 or younger, almost all had 200 games played in the minors, mostly many more than that.
Joe Torre, Bill Freehan and Frankie Hayes are the exceptions (Butch Wynegar had 199… if Posey has 199 pro games under his belt when he becomes an everyday ML catcher, I won’t complain)… man, Joe Torre was very good and very durable wasn’t he? But he did have a couple of seasons at the ML level with far fewer games played before playing 144 at the age of 23. Anyway 3 players doing something in the history of baseball makes it a very rare thing.
I still think Posey being the opening day catcher this year would be unwise from a player development standpoint – June-ish is the very earliest timeframe I would be really comfortable with… I would prefer easing him up to playing 140+ games/yr over a couple of seasons.
Utter frustration and futility.

Exactly, except because we’re retarded and brought him up to sit on the bench last year, it’s more like July. My biggest concern is manipulating the arb clock.

It would appear to me that he’s been moonlighting as a plastic surgeon.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

I’m just not sure if he’ll be able to carry the catcher’s workload into mid-November.

most catchers wear down in the second half, you know. Even young guys like Martin and Suzuki.

And they weren’t required to deal with that workload a such a young age and while learning on the job…
Utter frustration and futility.
