It's not that difficult to lose 5-10 pound in a relatively short period by fasting and exercisem especially for a guy his size.

Doing it long term, that’s the hard part.

Which is probably why they seem to be going so heavy on the “education” part of the regimen. If he’s not disciplined, he could easily put all the weight and more back on by March.

by Bhaakon on Nov 12, 2009 12:26 AM PST up reply actions

more-so that you lose big numbers in the first week or so because you’re shedding ‘water weight’, after that your body begins to adjust and you lose weight slower until your body adjusts again.

you have to remember that the way he is working out isn’t designed to just lose weight, but also to create muscle with weight work, so his weight loss total might not look like a big number because you’re adding mass as well as losing it.

by Tim LinCyYoung on Nov 12, 2009 3:31 AM PST up reply actions

Eventually you have to look at changes in BMI … instead of just looking at “weight loss.”

whatever the one is where you pay more attention to the amount of muscle a person has in relation to amount of fat, as opposed to just looking at total weight. Muscle weighs more than fat yadda yadda yadda… so gaining weight isn’t necessarily bad, so long as you are also losing fat in the process. That one.

by Merope on Nov 15, 2009 7:37 AM PST up reply actions

BMI is a wank. if you look at almost all professional athletes according to BMI they’re overweight. it’s possibly the worst weight measure tool ever.

BMI is a sham and a farce as is any “statistic” derived from it.

by Stuttering John Tamargo on Nov 12, 2009 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

You know I've always compared BMI to W/L record for a pitcher

They are both old stats that most people use as a legitimate statistic, though they can both be inaccurate and there are better stats. They can both be a good starting point to evaluate someones health/ a pitchers ability, but they can also be misleading and should be taken with a grain of salt. If used along with other statistics they become more useful

by bgunn on Nov 12, 2009 10:16 AM PST up reply actions

I think there is a stat for this...

something about it getting harder to lose 5 pounds in a week the more you lose 5 pounds in a week. I mean it makes sense when you think about it. Say I am 6 foot and 200 pounds. Well in week one I lose 5 pounds. That makes me 195. It’s harder to lose the next 5 pounds, but if I did it, I’d be 190. Again and I would be 185. It’s a lot harder to lose 5 pounds as a 6 footer when you are 185 rather than 200—you follow me. So if I lose 5 LB again I’m 180…man if Pablo keeps this up I think it could be detrimental. I mean this losing 5 pounds every week could eventually kill a guy. Anyone read Merchant of Venice?

How could this possibly be the first time that he’s lifting weights? Hasn’t he been in the system for years? And he’s been in the big leagues for over a year. He must have had access to a gym, and the giants have potenziano as their conditioning guy. I know strength isn’t the most important thing in baseball, but it can help, and I just assumed they all worked out pretty hard. And Pablo hit 25 homers. Guys playing in the U.S. probably start in high school, so I have a hard time believing the organization doesn’t encourage/require this starting at an earlier level.

The first time eating vegetables sucks.

They drip all over the place, and you can’t really tell what vegetable it is until you eat it. Yams look just like Carrots, and Peas and Green Beans can’t be distinguished, but squash, that crap is yellow, and there isn’t any other vegetable that’s yellow, at least not in a liquid state, so you know when there’s squash on the spoon. I hate that crap. Adults don’t even it that spew, what makes them think babies like it—pureed no less.

Pitchers get Silver Sluggers and Gold Gloves too. Seems perfectly even to me. I guess your argument is that pitchers face a larger pool of competition for these minor awards than hitters do, but so what? Hitters face a larger pool of competition for the MVP than pitchers do for the Cy.

Who says the Rookie of the Year is the MVP for rookies? Every year we hear the explicit argument that the MVP is not a Player of the Year award, that "valuable" doesn’t mean "best." So obviously voters approach the two awards differently. And since there’s no rookie award just for pitchers, there’s no reason to make them ineligible for this one.

I’m conflicted about whether or not I should make a joke about the obvious list on Pablo’s side of the boat.

A little more overt, but yeah. That’s the stuff.

I feel bad for mocking Pablo, because I love him and I’m not the skinniest one around either. But I mock because I love.

Right. It’s precisely because we like him.

That’s not actually Panda, guys.

Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.

I love the pics. Although I miss the Panda ’fro.

I’m glad that he has a team working with him. They’re doing it together. I don’t think he’d be as jolly if it was just a bunch of people screaming at him WORK IT OFF FATTY

Although LOL at “poopy-pants” in the article.

Yeah, without the ‘fro, I almost couldn’t tell Pablo apart from his brother. The clean-shaven look is a bit weird (not bad weird, just needs some getting used to weird) at this point.

Reading about his regimen motivates me to both work out and take a nap.

I hope he doesn’t fall off the wagon when he goes back to Venezuela.
