Tiger's may make Granderson available
An official of another club confirmed the Tigers are indicating that they would listen to offers for Curtis Granderson, who has been considered a franchise center fielder.
Still, one Tigers official said he would be "surprised" if the team traded Granderson.
Say what? The Tigers will listen to Granderson offers? (Ronald Martinez / Getty Images)
The Tigers are saying they would discuss trade offers for a number of their players, including starter Edwin Jackson, multiple sources told FOXSports.com on Tuesday.
The New York Post reported on its website Wednesday that Granderson is available, but that the Tigers would prefer not to trade him.
Falling revenues and escalating salaries are forcing the Tigers to control costs — even though they had a payroll of more than $130 million this year.
Granderson is signed to a long-term contract but had an inconsistent 2009 season.

I kind of love Granderson, although 2009 was an off-year for him.

I dont know what it would take...
But I would be very happy to see the Giants make a trade for Granderson. Would it be unreasonable to suggest that he could play Left or even Right — hes a good defender. If so, I am also hoping the Giants would sign Adam LaRoche. Line up would be:
Granderson (LF/RF)
Sanchez (2B)
Panda(3B)
LaRoche(1B)
Rowand (eh maybe) ©
Holtzy/Torres/Valez(LF/RF)
Uribe/Renteria (SS)

Rowand in Right?
Or Left? I am assuming he isnt going anywhere, so figured to leave him at the position he plays. Also, Granderson appears to be a better defender, so could he play other OF positions was my only question. Lastly, start him in CF, I think that is awesome.
Rowand may be better or less harmful in Left. I think the real issue here is not what Granderson would bring as a glove but what he could provide as a top-of-the-order bat.
by uber on Nov 11, 2009 3:50 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Correct answer.
Anyway, you always want your best defensive outfielder in center. Center has the most fair territory to cover and gets the most chances, so you get most defensive value from your best defender by having him play center.

We would have to give up a lot for his inconsistent numbers.
Plus he got 631 ab, I don’t know how many he would get as a giant, and his power would decrease I still hope we sign Eric Byrnes, just give him a chance. He is a gamer.

Wacky idea...
I’ll pass on Granderson. Even though he is better than all of our outfielders combined, it would be foolish to get him when we “already have a CF.” By “already have a CF” I just mean on the payroll, not like we have a good one.
But I cant believe nobody has brought up Miguel Cabrera. He is GOOD, and YOUNG. Which may be why the Tigers wouldnt deal him. But isnt he signed LOOOONG term to a BIG contract? Seems the best way to lower payroll and still compete would be trade the guy making a lot more than everyone else. Would you rather trade Granderson AND Jackson AND someone else just to get payroll down? Also had the weird off-field issue that might play in our favor. Also seems to have found a way to keep his weight under control. I dont know, might work.
Other wacky idea. Dontrelle Willis… Don’t freak out yet. Dude can hit. His last year in florida had an .856 OPS. Maybe try a Rick Ankiel type thing with him? But without the HGH. Or… dust off the Balco Machine, I dont know. He’d probably be free… Although may be too old for that type of move.
by projectmayhem713 on Nov 12, 2009 4:05 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Tigers won’t trade Cabrera for anything but a fat package of good prospects. Even though he’s expensive, he’s well worth it. Willis is too overpaid to be valuable. And Granderson or Rowand (probably Rowand) can be moved from CF to LF/RF (probably RF); all outfielders are basically the same and play all three OF positions so they can be swapped around. You just have changes on how good the defense is (Jermaine Dye, for example, could play CF, it would just be a horrible trainwreck).
