For some reason, the ESPN Story has one more paragraph.

Why the hell do they give the GM’s a say in whether there is instant replay or not? That is so stupid.
I’m fine if they only have it for home runs in the regular season, but they really should have some full scale instant replay capability in the playoffs. The games mean a lot more and even with 2 extra umpires they chances of human error are still high.

Such as what types of plays?

foul/fair calls
close plays at home, or any base for that matter.

Still seems like there will be a lot of human judgment. What do they do if an outfielder throws to the wrong bag, would the runner have scored? Should the umpires award the team a run? should they keep the runner at third? I just don’t like it. If the umpire called the ball fair, then it is fair. If the umpire calls a runner safe, then he’s safe.

I don’t understand the question. Could you give a concrete example of what you’re talking about?

I think he is going with this:
Runners on first and second, batter hits ball down the line. Outfielder runs toward the ball and can’t catch it but he does get a glove on it and the ball lands foul. Replay shows the ball was fair when the fielder touched it. What do you do?
1- give 1st base to the player and move the other runners one base? Thats not fair to the hitting team as the runner on second could probably had scored.
2- Give the hitter a base and move the runner on 1st to 3rd or second and the runner on second to home? Well thats not fair to the fielding team b/c the outfielder could have thrown the runner out at home

I think what would happen
is what’s started to happen in football, the umpires on the field rulings will trend toward the reviewable call in close situations.

Thank you baseball. I hate instant replay. It really is a huge time consuming process, which is what everyone is concerned about before they implement it, and they expand it slowly (look at the NFL), reasoning each change won’t add much time…and finally it gets to the point everyone feared where it just takes too much time. Screw that. Just using it for home runs sounds fair to me. Good decision!

I enjoy the flow of the game and the emotion of the moment a hell of a lot more than having to get every single call correct. Replay ruins this.

Sure, I like that too, but it’s not like it’s that frequent of an issue, either, and there will still be issues no matter what. Unless you expand replay to everything, in which case it’d take forever and that would suck, and even then there’s still judgment calls to object to. A wrong ruling makes the runners stop and the ump has to judge what bases they should go to…..

Good
It’s disgusting what instant replay has turned football into. Rather than make their best judgment call, referees are constantly defaulting to the call that will allow them to replay it. Games are getting bogged down to the point of near insanity. Yeah, we’ll complain when calls don’t go our way, but at least we aren’t sitting for 10 minutes while they try to figure out a call every other inning.

So do it like college. College FB replays usually take no more than a minute or two because they have special replay officials who review the play in the booth and send the call down to the Ref. It really only takes longer than an average at bat if it’s a really really tough call.
If we say there’s 5 (being really generous) close calls that have to be reviewed, that extends the game the equivalent of 5 whole at bats. OH NO! WHATEVER SHALL WE DO!>??!

That’s pretty much how Hockey does it too. They have replay officials that will look at close goals. I don’t even understand why the umpires need to leave the field to look at a monitor to decide whether a hit was a home run or not. Just have someone already qualified to look at the video and have them talk on the phone to the crew chief or home plate ump and tell them what the call is.

exactly
I don’t know why the NFL does it that way either. IMO the college replay system >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the NFL’s. It doesn’t take as long, it’s way more objective (since the booth can call for a review on any play) and really just better overall.

College also does a better job of limiting how often it’s used. If we’re talking about a missed call by millimeters, you know, who really cares. Use it for bad or important missed calls, and let the game play on otherwise.
