OT - German Shepherd Breeder
Kind of an obscure question, so mods can delete this if it violates anything, but I just moved here and don't have anyone else to ask. I have used the google but surprisingly have found few good leads.
Anyone know of any good German Shepherd breeders in the area? Or know how to point me in the right direction? I am hoping to pick up a puppy in the next few months and was hoping to get a recommendation from someone. I had a good one lined up in San Diego but moved before I could make the choice.

You were in San Diego, and about to buy a German Shepherd? I’m pretty sure there’s an Anchorman joke somewhere in there, but dang if I can find it….

"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."

Rescuing a dog from the pound or adopting from one of the private rescue foundations would be preferable. My main charity is the Animal Rescue Foundation. Unless you are going to show your dog and require it to be a pure bred, either of the above options should be considered.
With that said, good luck with your search.

I live in North Carolina, but as soon as I saw the conversation about German Shepherds I had to get involved…
After all, one day I would love to live in northern California and have a German Shepherd…
My grandma had a Shepherd that had a profound effect on my life when I was a kid. Such great dogs…
I did a quick google search and this looks like a good place to start. You probably already saw the site, but in case you didn’t….
Let me know what you find out!

I always like that people refer to them as “German Shepherd Dogs.” As if to avoid confusion about the German Shepherd Humans and German Shepherd Gophers.
To your question: Please reconsider breeders unless that’s what you want to become. You can find a GSD (or any breed/mix that connects with you) at a rescue.
Best of luck in your search. Dog bless you.

You know, I’ve never heard of anyone refer to them that way.

My dad has a lame joke about this. It goes:
Wanna hear my impression of a German Shepard?
Sure, Dad! (is there really any other answer to people with lame jokes?)
/In German accent “YOUR SHEEP WILL CROSS THE ROAD NOW!”

If you feel like slumming, I’d throw my full recommendation behind this organization. They rescue street dogs from Taiwan, so you get not only the benefit of having an excellent dog, but the satisfaction that your dog wasn’t converted in General Tsao’s Chicken.
In all seriousness, I hope you find the dog you want. Dog’s are astounding and I’m glad you’ll be getting one soon. I love rescue organizations, but to each his / her own.
Boooooo eating dogs joke.

Yeah, they don’t eat them in Taiwan.

Nor are they made of chicken.

I was being sarcastic about the dog eating, though the treatment of strays in the country is no laughing matter.
My own dog is a rescue from Taiwan, and the amount of physical abuse that she’s must have been quite a trial. We’ve worked extremely hard over the last couple years to build her trust with people and allay her fears (particularly cigarettes because she’s got a couple burns). I chose to adopt a stray after witnessing some pretty shocking abuse while abroad in the region.
That being said, I apologize for my poor attempt at levity.
Unfortunately not
if you are into rats and rat breeding, however, I can show you quite a few places in the city you may like.
Will this be your first German Shepherd?
If so, congrats. (She’s now 3 1/2, and of course much larger; always gets called a male because she’s so huge)
Good luck in your search.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
We had two when I was very young, they were actually the landlords, but they stayed on our property. Then we got one as a family when I was about 15. He passed away a few years ago. Absolutely amazing dog. More unique personality in a Shepherd ive ever seen, even though I know everyone says that about their dog.
Ive always been in love with the breed and I dont think adopting is the appropriate route. With disease and temperment history being based on the bloodlines, i dont think i want to leave it up to chance by going to a pound.

I understand perfectly
Especially with hip dysplasia as well. I got mine from a local family who had bred their dogs, but they weren’t breeders, and all of the puppies were great.

If you are worried about health concerns then consider the fact that mutts are much less likely to have genetic diseases than a pure bred dog.

It’s pretty clear he wants a gsd, and is willing to do the research (and pay expen$e). I’ve had a number of Grate Danes over the years, and they are a tricky breed, and as much of a supporter of shelters, I’ll likely consider a professional breeder when it comes time for the next dane.

just some FYI, I understand the need for breeders.

German Shepherd Love
Bandit is the offspring of a German Shepherd (dad) and a Siberian Husky (mom) – both purebreds. He’s 10 years old now and has grown quite a bit from when he was a puppy. Absolutely incredible dogs and I wish you nothing but the best.
Adopted brother of Jason Jarvis.
Along the lines of what has already been posted by others.
Contact your local shelter ASPCA or the county shelter, and ask for the number of the local G.Shepherd rescue group.
I do a little volunteer work for our local shelter. Recently shelters have just been deluged with animals whose homes were foreclosed upon.

I know the dog folks are in on this thread—does anyone have a suggestion for a good vet here in SF?
I’ve split my time between SJ and SF, and I need to move my dog care here to SF. I’m in the Mission, but can go anywhere if you feel strongly.
Mission Pet Hospital gets really mixed reviews on Yelp, but I’ve pondered them.
Any tips would be appreciated.

The issue with Yelp review of vets is that a lot of them are peopel who felt ripped off and have nothing to do with the quality of care. My vet here in Philly gets horrible reviews on Yelp b/c they are expensive and the cheap one (who I went to once and had a horrible experience) has great reviews.

My GF had a dog with a lot of problems (blind, diabetic, skin issues) so she has a lot of experience with vets in SF. She had this to say:
I liked Dr. Leyba at San Francisco Pet Hospital, if it’s for something complicated then he can refer to a specialist at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists.
We're all basically Pedro Feliz.
Looked at Yelp for the hospital, and the 2nd or 3rd post is sooo San Francisco:
but the crew at SF Pet Hospital made it easy to get Jameson all his puppy shots
I’m thinking of bringing my dog Fernet Ginger Back over there.

I always use these guys, even now that we’ve moved out. We take Charley the dachshund to Dr. Bogatsky. They’re great, plenty of parking, no freaked-out animals that I’ve seen.

Also, I don't really use Yelp
… ever. There’s too much weirdness going on with people posting crappy reviews because they got some sort of skanky feeling in their left eyebrow, or people posting good reviews because they got threatened into it (there was a story in one of the SF papers about that awhile back) or whatever. It’s just not really what I’d use to make a decision on something. Too many factors at play that don’t involve the quality of the business.

Thought the name sounded familiar
When I was a kid growing up in the city, this is the vet we used.
This was in 60s. I don’t remember specifics, but they treated us pretty well, and the family dogs even better. They billed on ability to pay, as I recall.
Tks for the memories. :)

Didn't see it posted
But here’s the site for German Shepherd Rescue No CA
http://www.savegsd.org/
No puppies, but some good looking young GSD’s available for adoption.
I adopted my boxer when she was one year old. She’s 11 now and the best damn dog I’ve ever had.
