All-time favorite SF Giants: second baseman
I think it's safe to call the right-handed pitcher fave as Tim Lincecum has been anchored around the 55% mark for a couple days. It was fun to read the spirited support for Juan Marichal, as well as people sticking up for Jim Barr, Ed Halicki, Bill Laskey, Bill Swift, and many others. A bit of trivia: Anyone know the first time Bill Swift pitched at Candlestick Park?
So, as it stands, the favorite right-handed pitcher voting is as follows: Tim Lincecum 54%, Juan Marichal 19%, Matt Cain 8%, Jason Schmidt 8%.
As for the voting for favorite pinch hitter, votes are still trickling in. So here is the link if anyone still wants to chime in: http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2009/10/4/1068451/all-time-favorite-sf-giants-pinch
This is the one I've really been looking forward to. I'm keeping the selections to the cream of the crop, so please feel encouraged to use the OTHER choice if necessary. This is the poll for the all-time favorite San Francisco Giants second baseman. To avoid ridicule, the imposition of over analysis, and the like, please vote for your FAVORITE player at each position. It doesn't necessarily have to be the best, meaning if Dan Gladden is your fave in CF, it's your prerogative to vote for him over Willie Mays. Regarding WRITE-IN VOTES ... PLEASE, when casting a write-in vote, check other on the questionnaire, then below title a comment with ONLY THE PLAYERS NAME. Any thoughts, statements, etc. should go in the body of the comment. Anyone else voting for the same write-in candidate, PLEASE respond to the previous player comment by titling your comment with ONLY A "+1". If you would like to clarify a "+1" comment, please include the player's name in the body of the comment.

Easy for me. I loved Robby Thompson, and was a fan of Ray Durham, but Jeff Kent was easily my favorite player for the entire time he was on the Giants. He hit dingerz, was a great run producer, he sported a porn stache, and he had a gun for relay throws to 3rd and home. Also he played all out and played the game the right way, he also was damn fucking fun to watch. He also seemed to get better every year too.

First for Robby!
1993 was the year I got into baseball. So it’s entirely sentimental.

Considering I am a racial minority and Kent is a bit of a racist, I cannot vote for him. So I chose Robby Thompson.
BTW, where is Ray Durham?

They say he had a problem with people in general. Sounds more like an A*hole rather than a racist.

Not quite as bad as Will Clark, but heck yes.

Clark mellowed as he got older.

He mellowed in Texas? There’s something about that that just doesn’t sound right.

I saw some of the comments after my Juan Marichal post, and I get the point that it’s “favorite” and not best, but doesn’t everything then get limited to the last decade or two? When we get to “favorite” centerfielder, is Aaron Rowand going to get more votes than Willie Mays?

time difference is obviously going to have an effect on voting, which is most likely why it’s an all-time favourite thing rather than the best of all-time. It’s easier to say that a certain player is one of your favourite players if you actually got to watch them. Ofcourse there will be players who will get loved regardless if everyone saw them or not, but for most it’s going to be about appeal.
i know you’re not trying to put a damper on this or anything, but let’s just try to keep this thing fun. if everyone had the same opinion it’d be kinda bleh. the whole “oh yeah that guy!” thing is a lot of fun.

"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."

Favorite: Tito Fuentes. He was just fun to watch, particularly with his exaggerated batting stance.
Best: Jeff Kent

Tito
as I date myself once again. When I graduated high school in 1973, my mom told me I could have any gift I want as a present. I picked a two week trip to San Francisco to see my Giants, my first trip out there. I went to nine games, and there was a little Cuban lady at each one who loved Tito Fuentes. The whole game she would yell, “Tito, Tito, Tito!!” over and over again. During one of the games Tito let a routine ground ball go right through his legs. Some big guy quietly got up, walked over to the lady and yelled at the top of his lungs, “Butterfingers, Butterfingers, Butterfingers!!” The team was pretty bad, but I had a great time.

Tito's stance
The great thing about Tito’s crazy stance was that it was just from the left side. His stance from the right was kind of normal. WTF?

I always tried to replicate my swing to Will Clark’s in little league. In high school that didn’t work so I switched to Robby Thompson.

Definitely Robby
I loved what Kent did as a Giant, but my favorite will always be Robby Thompson. “Uribe to Thompson to Clark” was music to my ears as an 8-year-old just getting into baseball.

Ron Hunt
HBP machine. Led the NL in HBP the last seven seasons of his career, including a mind-boggling 50 HBP in 1971 (to go along with 58 walks) after the Giants traded him to the Expos. Allegedly wore a cut off wet suit under his jersey. This kind of selfless sacrifcing to get on base is what the current team needs, not the other kind of sacrifcing (bunting). Also acquired via a rare Dodger-Giant trade (Tom Haller)- the first such trade since the two teams moved west.

Jeff Kent, of course
For all the reasons mentioned above. Lot of love for Robby Thompson, but JK could bat cleanup, plus he always had that retired military badass look to him.

But also, some love for Joel Youngblood
That’s another Giants trope: trying to get a little more offense by playing guys out of position. Willie McCovey playing left one season. Dave Kingman at third. Bill Madlock at second. Plus, of course, the continuing saga of Eugenio Velez.

Robby Thompson was great, but what Kent did in the context of his existence as a Giant—traded for Matt Williams, blossomed into the premiere power hitting 2B in the game after being a journeyman with no hitting prowess, and the MVP award—puts him ahead of Thompson in my book.
I also liked Ray, even if we got hostile towards him at the end.
