Rebuilding trade for prospects?

When was the last time the Giants made a blockbuster-type trade in which they traded away a star to get prospects? Please tell me it wasn't the Matt Williams trade 15ish years ago! Looking at the Rockies this season, it's clear that a key to their success this season was by trading away Matt Holliday and getting Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez in return. The Giants need to fill multiple holes in their lineup, and after trading away Barnes and Alderson, their stock of pitching prospects ready to contribute is suddenly thin. Given the rumors that the Brewers are dangling Mat Gamel, I'd like to see the Giants trade Matt Cain for Gamel, Jeremy Jeffress (top pitching prospect) and maybe even JJ Hardy or another major league throw-in player in order to retool in multiple areas.

Sabean probably doesn't have the balls to do such a thing, but a "rebuilding" trade is just what the Giants need to win the division next year.

If they threw in Hardy and we gave them a lower level Minor leaguer who is a C or below grade. But I still think after this season Cain = Braun or no deal straight up.

Getting Carlos Gonzalez and Huston Street wasn’t a big key to the Rockies’ success this year at all.

They’d probably want Holliday in the playoffs right now.

That trade helps them out next year, and the year after that.

by dregarx on Oct 8, 2009 7:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Huston Street kinda was

They needed a solidified bullpen. That was their biggest need going into the trade deadline. That was because Street was their only dominant reliever. They probably never would’ve gone on that season-resurrecting tear without him.

The very bad man traded my son...So now I'd like you all to meet my new son, Ryan "Aaron" Garko...Dammit it's just not the same!

by boonitez on Oct 8, 2009 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Isn’t an everyday cleanup hitter more valuable than a pitcher in the pen who affects a small number of innings?

Not that Street didn’t have any impact at all, but really, it’s not that close.

The trade itself was pretty savvy given the contract lengths of the pieces involved.

by dregarx on Oct 8, 2009 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

for the Giants, yes

but not for the Rockies. They have one of the best offenses in baseball. Having Holliday back would be nice for them, but they need Street more. It’s better to have a great offense and an okay bullpen than an incredible offense and no bullpen. In context of the Rockies weaknesses this season, Street was much more important than Holliday would’ve been. The Rockies starting corner OF’s were Brad Hawpe, who hit for a .900 OPS, and Seth Smith, who almost did too. The increase in production from having Holliday over Smith wouldn’t be enough to compensate for not having Street. Without Street, their bullpen would’ve been scary bad. Also doesn’t hurt to mention that Carlos Gonzalez hit for an .878 OPS, which is excellent from a 4th OF.

To get something. We need young stud hitters we have an opportunity to move a stud pitcher and survive. I’d like to see a big trade cuz that’s the best way to overhaul our lineup

Neither Hardy or Gamel are “young stud hitters” not at all.

You don’t trade a valuable asset like Cain for mediocre talent. Hardy has a nice glove but he’s not some stud hitter. Gamel has no position and really hasn’t shown he’s a stud hitter either.

Hobbes calls Cain a valuable asset. The reality is his UBER VALUABLE. Pick your 10 year span of baseball and you will not find more than a handful ( in pitching rich era’s a double handful) of guys at his age, with his track record, his stuff and no injuries.

Not that it was a blockbuster-type trade, but Darren Ford really impressed over the last couple months of the season. We may have gotten a solid Darren Lewis-caliber center fielder in exchange for 131 plate appearances by Ray Durham in Milwaukee.

So i should only use his second half OPS and ignore the OPS he put up in the other 2 1/2 years at A+-ball? Darren Ford is nowhere near a MLB player so isn’t blocked by anyone at the moment.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on Oct 10, 2009 6:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I agree he is not ready for the bigs. But that isn’t a realistic yard stick. Of all players who excel in A-ball, maybe 1 in 1,000 are ready for immediate competition for a big-league job. Numbers are just numbers though. And yes, sometimes you need to consider certain numbers misleading. Ford improved greatly this year, and those improvements were a result of real skill improvement. Many times in low-level development, the short-term improvement is more indicactive of a player’s ability than the long-term production. I mean, I’m not discounting any opinions you might have about him as a player. But numbers aren’t opinions. And with all respect, just quoting a blanket OPS — a regulator OPS no less, as opposed to an actual OPS — isn’t much of an argument.

by StickRat on Oct 10, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well of course it’s not a realistic yard-stick, it was merely a response to the comment that Rowand is blocking him (which i’m sure was tongue in cheek)

Ford’s numbers improved greatly this year, hopefully due to a real improvement. The problem is that a performance bump from a player in their third season at a level more often that not has very little to do with a “skill improvement”. I hope that Ford isn’t one of those cases but it’ll take more than half a season of improved performance for me to have faith in that being true.

He does have the advantage that his skill-set (big platoon split, good defense, etc) is good for the role of a useful bench/platoon player so i’m hoping that he can be of some use.

I’d say the only real example of trading a star for rebuilding prospects in our history was the spectacularly awful Jack Clark trade, which doesn’t seem to get it’s due contempt or derision from Giants fans. Of course, we all hate the AJ deal; us old timers still grouse about the Willie McCovey/Gaylord Perry/Bobby Bonds firesale, and even the George Foster fiasco. But where’s the appropriate bile for Jack Clark for David Green, David Lapoint, Gary Rajsich and Jose Uribe?

I think we were so bad for so long the fact the team started playing winning ball again and looked to be on the start of 10 year run was enough. if you remember, Green turned out to be much older than they thought he was, not to mention the fact that he sucked. I think the trading of Clark had something to do with them breaking up that “God Squad” that was so obsessed with religion that they didn’t bother practicing much baseball.

Mostly Jack was massively pouting because a) it looked like they were going to get good there for a year and then they went back to sucking; and b) they didn’t feel much like paying him anything. When it got to critical mass they shipped him off for a bunch of dead weight.

by daveinexile on Oct 9, 2009 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah, that was several years earlier, ‘79 I think. From a talent perspective I think they were hoping to fill the yawning chasm at 1b caused by Evans leaving for FA by plugging in David Green (which other than the age thing was just terrible scouting. He’d really been pretty bad for St. Louis in his “breakout year” the year before).

Mostly it was just because they’d allowed the Clark contract situation to become toxic. Memory serves he missed a LOT of time in 1984 with various lingering ailments. Fact it looks like he only played 57 games, which is a lot less than I was thinking. He just gave up on the club sadly. Still when he deigned to play he had one of the dominant bats in the league (OPS+ 176). And they turned him into, well a couple years of Jose Uribe. That’s a BAD trade.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

No doubt it was BAD trade. This whole thing made me go back and look up Metzger. Considering those fingers cost the team up to 5 more seasons of LeMaster as the starting SS and still left us in a position that Uribe was a necessary thing to go get man those days were even darker then I remembered them. Score one of Memory blocking!

Why haven't the Giants traded a star player away for prospects?

Well, may be if look here, here, here adn here you will find the answer.

Hint: The only tradable players, by talent on those teams are BLB, Feliz, Durham and Vizquel. 3 are too old for value and one’s value was deflated (and could never be as high as Matt Holliday’s) b/c the Giants couldn’t figure out where to use him.

There’s aren’t all that many blockbuster trades for prospects in general. You get a few on a league scale but it doesn’t work out to many on a team by team scale. Also, blockbuster trades for prospects are usually made by teams that aren’t competitive. We’ve for the most part being trying to compete aside from the last few seasons.

And in the last few seasons we haven’t had any players that could command large returns of prospects aside from Bonds and perhaps Cain. Bonds was obviously not getting traded and Cain was young enough that a rebuilding side doesn’t need to trade him.

Cainer’s going nowhere.
If you’re going to trade anyone at this point, it should be Bumgarner. The core of Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, and even Zito is so deep, and the bullpen is so good, all the pieces are there to compete now.
I’m not suggesting just throwing Bumgarner away for a decent power bat, it would be an extremely short list, requiring a young, proven, cheap, controllable bat, i.e. Votto, Longoria, uh, shit, maybe Wright. There aren’t many guys that fit the mold. But I would definitely be kicking the tires to see what Bumgarner could fetch this offseason. Rather than settling for an Uggla type and losing a piece of the immediate SP core that would be championship capable with an offensive upgrade. Worry about replacing Bumgarner a couple of years down the road. Or is that just way too short sighted?

Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

we don't necessarily need wright or longoria

pablo, even he doesn’t lose any weight in the offseason, can still be servicable at 3rd 2-3 seasons

by sfoakbay on Oct 12, 2009 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Longoria and Wright are going nowhere. Longoria’s contract is so amazingly incredible that the Rays probably wouldn’t take Lincecum for Longoria. MAYBE we could get Votto; the Reds need pitching and could compete in 2011 if they had Bumgarner, but I don’t like that trade. Bumgarner is going to be more valuable and cheaper for longer, and we’re building a team around pitching. He’s our #1 prospect, so we’d have to be blown away, eventually he’ll take the #5 rotation spot, and a rotation of Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Sanchez, and Zito is going to be incredible, probably the best in the bigs. Wright is going nowhere because he is the face of the Mets. The fans would revolt if he was traded (unless it was for an absolutely monstrous package).

I don’t like the idea of adding a big bat. I think if we can have a similarly successful bullpen, a full year of new Zito and new Sanchez and F. Sanchez, all we need is a high-OPS corner OF and good platoon splits (Torres against lefties, for example). If you want to go after the Reds, get Jonny Gomes, or see if you can pry B.J. Upton from the Rays.

I’d have to think about that if I were the Giants.

by Wonderful Terrific Monds on Oct 13, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I very much doubt it. Votto and Cain are probably similar level players (give or take) and Votto (presumably) has 4 more years of team control as opposed to 2 for Cain. They probably wouldn’t make the trade straight up never mind including Bailey as well. Would be a decent trade for us though.

A slow fat guy with a shitty attitude will not do well here and I think we all can at least agree that someone with a little bit of speed to take advantage of shots that don’t clear the wall in the gaps. If getting Fielder just meant a first round pick, maybe you could convince me that his shitty attitude was worth the power, but if the cost is our second best pitcher who for most of the year was a top 5 Cy Young candidate than the answer has to be a resounding no.

This is just full of fail.

1. We can’t eat Willis’ contract even if they take Renteria
2. The Tigers won’t trade Granderson; he’s too valuable. He’s their second best offensive player, and they won’t have a CF if he departs.
3. Sanchez is looking better; trading him now, potentially right before his breakthrough, is selling low
4. Pucetas+Romo is going to be iffy for Hardy; Pucetas hasn’t pitched in the majors and Romo’s only been up for a little over a year, plus that ERA will scare them. Hardy’s blocking Alcides Escobar, yes, but they’re not going to give him away for nothing. Besides, Romo is our 3rd best reliever behind Wilson and Affeldt.
5. Abreu is going back to the Angels, and his defense is so bad he’s probably a DH at this point
6. Beltre can’t hit even if he can play a mean 3B, and we need offense; besides, he’s injury-prone
7. You have two CFs (I assume you play Granderson in LF though; Rowand is a slightly better fielder according to UZR)
8. Bumgarner should absolutely not be in the starting rotation this year; he needs to develop another pitch and get his velocity back. Maybe he’ll be ready by Opening Day 2011, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
9. Signing Penny is going to be hard after the way he pitched; he’s not in love with SF or anything.
10. If you sign Penny, Abreu, and Beltre, that’s going to be at least, at LEAST $15M in salary, probably more. Add maybe $5M for Granderson and Willis minus Sanchez, Schierholtz, and Renteria, and maybe $4M for Hardy and I’m betting we top $100M in salary for 2010. If you’re going to increase payroll by $10M or more, let’s sign Matt Holliday or something.
