All-time favorite SF Giants: right-handed starter

First of all, what a freakin' baseball game that Tigers/Twins elimination match-up was!! I can't wait to see Web Gems on Baseball Tonight. (For the top five, I'm guessing: 5 - Orlando Cabrera 4 - Ryan Raburn 3 - Curtis Granderson 2 - Brandon Inge 1 - Nick Punto.)

As for the all-time favorite SF Giants pinch-hitter, it's too close to call at this point. I'm going to ask people to rec the thread to allow as many people to cast votes, as there are four players within seven votes of one another. And that doesn't even count the write-in support for Mark Sweeney. So here is the link, if you would like to rec it and/or if you would still like to cast a vote.

http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2009/10/4/1068451/all-time-favorite-sf-giants-pinch

As it stands, here is the current voting: Candy Maldonado 18%, Mike Ivie 14%, Nate Schierholtz 14%, Felipe Crespo 12%, Joel Youngblood 9%.

This is the poll for the all-time favorite San Francisco Giants right-handed starter. To avoid ridicule, the imposition of over analysis, and the like, please vote for your FAVORITE player at each position. It doesn't necessarily have to be the best, meaning if Dan Gladden is your fave in CF, it's your prerogative to vote for him over Willie Mays. Regarding WRITE-IN VOTES ... PLEASE, when casting a write-in vote, check other on the questionnaire, then below title a comment with ONLY THE PLAYERS NAME. Any thoughts, statements, etc. should go in the body of the comment. Anyone else voting for the same write-in candidate, PLEASE respond to the previous player comment by titling your comment with ONLY A "+1". If you would like to clarify a "+1" comment, please include the player's name in the body of the comment.

Wow we are young!

Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

Even though Timmy has only been here a short time, he has given us nothing short of Magic.

Had to go with Timmy but Schmidt was the first true dominate power righty the Giants had since I started following the team. He was damn fun to watch.

As much as I love Timmy and Matt, I got to go with Jason Schmidt. For a few years there it seemed like literally any time he took the mound he might throw a no-hitter or at least a shutout and strike out anywhere from 10 to 20 batters a game. He had the 98 MPH heater and the nasty changeup and he was just filthy. I don’t care if he was on HGH or roids or what, but he was damn fun to watch pitch every time out.

I’ll never forget his games vs the Cubs and Red Sox where he was sooooo close to having no-hitters and also he got 15 + K’s too. He was flat out incredible. As great as Tim and Matt have been, I don’t remember either having had games THAT great, especially as often as Schmidt seemed to have done it. And he did it against a NL that was much better offensively than the shit that is going around right now.

I actually attended Juan Marichal’s no-hitter when I was just a tiny pup roger. Really magical. I think seeing that game so young has set me up for being a tiny bit disappointed at the first hit in any game I go to. Still the only no no I’ve ever seen in person (because I was absolutely NOT at that Kevin Brown game, no sirreee, never sat through that mess, la la la la I can’t hear me…)

I voted for Timmy. I have only been a Giants fan for 8 years, and have only been seriously following the team for about 4 years, so even though I’ve read about, and sometimes seen clips of these older players, it’s harder for me to grasp their influence on this fan base.

The only other two pitchers on this list that I would feel deserved my vote would be Matt Cain and Jason Schmidt. I remember Schmidt’s last year with us, and I was always impressed when he took the mound. I clearly remember watching his 16 strikeout game against the Marlins, and I adored him. But once he became a Dodger, that adoration was gone. Cain is a very close second, if not in a dead tie with Lincecum. You could tell that he would be a solid pitcher as soon as he came up. But Lincecum is special. I even know we may not see anything like him again, and these past 3 years have been incredible.

I don't really like "favorite right-hander of all time."

Because I automatically think, “Donny Robinson,” which contributes to no debate beyond, “I bet you can’t think of any baseball players named Donny Robinson.” Though at least I’d WIN THAT DEBATE.

To make that complaint useful, maybe you should shift the category to “Most Significant” or something like that. I have soft spots for weird freaking players, so my favorites are rarely the best players. I’m all about the Willie McGees and Fifi Rodriguezzes and R.E.M.s of the world.

So vote for Don Robinson then. If he’s your favorite, he’s your favorite. No one can take that away from you, even if he isn’t the majority favorite. I think we all have our Don Robinsons. That’s kind of the point of these topics … to read about people’s favorite players, and why they love them. Everyone loves Tim Lincecum, and that he will win this poll by a landslide is great. I think that’s right on the money. But there are people like yourself for whom a player like The Caveman is the man. Shoot, I’m sure there is someone somewhere who has an affinity for Jim Brower as their favorite RH starter, if for no other reason than because he pitched the day their kid was born. Whatever. People’s favorites are their favorites. And for the record, Felix Rodriguez is one of my favorites too.

Hmmm… there seems to be some kind of weird left-handed slam of R.E.M. inside that comment. Where’d that come from? They were great. Best American band of the 80s.

I was a huge schmidt fan, but the whole dodgers thing kind of ruined that. Tim Linceum has a long way to go to outdo Juan Marichal.

Timmy is more of a strikeout pitcher, but Marichal for quite a long time, was a dominant pitcher, and HE PUT HIS MONEY WHERE HIS MOUTH IS, HE TOOK A BAT AND CLUBBED THE DODGER CATCHER JOHNNY ROSEBORO! That enough through generations of stories should get Marichal more votes. Did I see Ed Halicki on the list? Jim Barr? Steve Stone? There are two hall of famers on the list and hardly getting any votes. Have some of you who never saw Marichal pitch, at least have seen some videos? What happenned to Sam Jones.

by bradleybear on Oct 6, 2009 10:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I respect what you’re saying, but: You’re calling people out because they love Tim Lincecum? What’s not to love? As for Halicki and Barr … there were a lot of names I had to omit from many eras, because honestly, How long was the list gonna get? That’s why there is an “other” choice. Sam Jones will make an appearance on another poll. But Steve Stone? He had a career record of 10-16 as a Giants starter. That would be like saying Manny Mota should be in the running for favorite Giants pinch hitter.

Juan Marichal

…and since this is a sentimental thread, and no one complained about my other poem post…

JUAN MARICHAL, TOPPS CARD #330, 1974

Juan Marichal’s face
half shadow black from his hat
half coffee and cream
                                 beautifully Dominican
belies a faultline
                                 where he quaked
emotionally
so that in the 1965 pennant race he split open
Johnny Roseboro’s head
                with a bat.

One side of him so cool
                          The other broiling hot
                                          like a San Francisco vista
                      like plate techtonics
of rocks and seaspray and sky
                  of converging continents
in control of a thousand pitches
             summoning fire beneath the surface
at baffling angles & speeds & locations.
a fastball going like shot lava.
                                   One image remains constant:
Juan Marichal on his planted right leg
                           his leg lifted high
foot above the hatline of his forehead
                toe pointed skyward
         pitcher poised in reverse arabesque
like a powerful prima ballerina.

Incidentally, one of my brothers went to Fresno St. at the same time as Gardy, and he always used to say that Lori (Mark’s late wife) was actually the Big Man on Campus (she was the star of the Women’s Softball Team which was a major player in the national championship scene at that time) and Mark was like her #1 groupie apparently. It would be like, “wow there goes Lori! Yeah, her boyfriend’s some kind of athlete too, I think.”

I really felt for Gardy during those years where Lori was fighting cancer and he was still trying to play ball. That must have been hell.

Me too. I mean, Marichal is great, but as I wasn’t around when he was pitching, I never got to develop a real rooting/identification thing with him. My lucky father was a young man during the Mays era. When he talks about his favorite player, he gets to talk about Mays as someone who followed his exploits as they happened, even if only from afar.

I’ve been waiting for a great pitcher of my lifetime to play for the Giants. It’s only been some three years, but Tim Lincecum has already been a greater part of a dream come true.

Love Timmy, but Marichal did it for a lot longer. Best thing about Juan was watching him in big games, July, August, September, and especially against the Dodgers. They mostly pitched Drysdale against him, and Juan beat DD like the overrated chubbo he was. it was glorious, i tell you. Plus Marichal had that funky delivery.

No one who saw him pitch is going to be voting for anyone else. I love Timmy but there was never any reports of Juan having trouble with the heat and can you imagine Timmy throwing 16 shutout innings in a game?

I sure hope not. There’s a reason why Juan was done by the time he was 34, and all those extra inning complete games are a significant clue as to what that reason was.

I didn’t witness Marichal pitch, or really anyone before like the mid-80s. So my main candidates are Schmidt, Lincecum, Cain, Burkett, and Swift.

Schmidt was a monster for those first few years, before his arm almost fell off. Cain is a strong choice, because he’s Matt Cain. That’s got to count for something. Burkett and Swift were both awesome that 20 win season, and just seemed unbeatable.

But then there’s Lincecum. I feel good with that choice.

Lincecum it is.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Almost impossible to compare "then" vs "now"

I voted for Gaylord because he was as good as Marichal in a very different way… and I’ve always loved junk-ball pitchers, legal or not. In fact one of my least favorite trends in MLB is the dearth of knuckleball, screwball and (gasp) spit/scuffball pitchers.

But I was a kid in the 60s and I got to see these guys play. Likewsie, I got to see the Count, Kruk, Big Daddy et al… and of course our current studs. Lincecum is my favorite since Gaylord and he may end up being my favorite all-time Giant … don’t know if he’ll ever surpass Gaylord as my “all-time all-time”.

PS – My GF is a huge Cain fan.

I voted Marichal...

…though it was tough to pass over the Enchanter.

However, I wanted to point out that at the moment, Lincecum is winning…with exactly 55% of the vote.

Too young to have watched anyone before Schmidt, so he was my favorite player when I first started really paying attention to the Giants. That fastball-changeup combo was unbelievable. Even when he signed with the Dodgers, I still kept his poster up on my wall.

I voted for Timmy, though. It’s been amazing to watch him develop into such a dominating pitcher in just three years, and I hope that down the road, he can turn into the Marichal of this generation.

by imovermyhead on Oct 7, 2009 4:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Can’t. He already blew that by going ahead and winning a Cy Young.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

This goes for me too – voted timmy, didn’t see anyone before schmidt, kept the schmidt poster up after the move to the dodgers (When I think about the betrayal I’m mad at him, but apparently not that mad since my heart stopped me from taking down the poster)

"Me & The Spitter"

If you havnt read it, you should, Perry is my favorite for a reason.

by SFGfanatic on Oct 7, 2009 5:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Thing about Perry though is that his greatest years came in Cleveland. He had more good years in SF than anywhere else, but I think clearly his peak was as an Indian. That makes him hard to vote for for me.

You gotta be kidding!!

I love Tim Lincecum, and I know most of you guys are young, but picking him over Juan Marichal is just ridiculous. I know it’s a different era, but a six time 20 game winner, 244 complete games, 52 complete game shutouts, (one year he had ten!!) and his ERA from 1963-69 was 2.41, 2.48, 2.13, 2.23, 2.76, 2.43, and 2.10. He’s the greatest pitcher in SF Giant history, and Tim’s going to have to at least 5 more hall of fame years before he gets mentioned in the same sentence. And not only that, with the high leg kick Juan was just beautiful to watch. I’m usually jealous of people much younger than me, but one big thing I have over them is that I got to watch Juan Marichal pitch and you young guys missed it!

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

I am jealous that you got to see JM pitch. Personally I couldn’t vote for a guy I’ve never seen play.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY LUDICROUS THAT MARICHAL IS NOT ON THE TOP OF THE LIST.

Tim has got a long way to go to come even close to what Marichal did in his career. BUt don’t believe me, get a tape of his 16 inning complete game against Warren Spahn (who also went 16 innings), watch it, and learn about true greatness.

Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

by oldrips on Oct 7, 2009 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't gotta be kidding

It’s not “Greatest right-handed starter.” It’s “All-time favorite right-handed starter.” I am aware that Juan Marichal was great and I wish I could have watched him pitch, but I don’t really have any emotional connection with it. It’s like saying it’s ridiculous for me to not consider Christy Mathewson my all-time favorite Giants pitcher. I recognize his extraordinary talent and accomplishments, but it’s really not the same.

I voted for Cain, by the way, because I love Matt Cain.

How dare people have their own preferences!!

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Lincecum

I voted Timmy, but two of my personal honorable mentions are Billy Swift and William Vanlandingham. Swift was amazing in ‘93. I’m not sure why I liked Vanlandingham.

LOL - Gotta love America!

Free Speech and all that. Some folks apparently forgot that this post is asking for someone’s OPINION… but that doesn’t excuse the younger guys for taking a shot at the older guys and vice versa.

That’s why I titled my post “Almost impossible to compare ‘then’ vs ‘now’”… if you didn’t see them play, why would they be your favorite? Gaylord is my favorite RHP, but he’s not the “greatest” nor is Linescum right now. Timmy may be someday, but the “greatest” is probably Mathewson or perhaps Marichal.

Oops... Linsecum... not "Linescum"

As the Big Unit said… senior moment… LOL!
