If you like Bochy, defend this:

"I thought as hitters that we weren’t aggressive enough in certain counts, especially ahead in the count. I want these guys to let the bats go. I thought we were late a lot on fastballs in hitter’s counts. We want to work on that too. That’s a big part of the game. Power comes from being aggressive."

Dude simply does not understand hitting at all

.239/.298/.388

His career line. It seems a crime that Lansford, who has evidently been preaching the right stuff, will be the scapegoat, when Bochy, Sabean, Dunston, and lord knows who else have all been actively undermining him.

Like I said in the other thread, if he means selectively aggressive – fine. They did waste a lot of hitter’s counts.

By my observation, though, they wasted a lot more of them by being too aggressive (swinging at any goddamn thing the pitcher threw after they got ahead in the count) than they did by not being aggressive enough though.

Yeah, I didn't see that conversation until after I posted this

And while I think context counts for something, there is simply nothing that I’ve ever heard or seen to suggest that any of the Giants management, other than Carney Lansford, who stands to be axed, gives a flipping hoot about OBP, a stat representative of the single-most important offensive ability, namely, to not make outs. It amazes me how much they can talk about bunts and not getting marginally better with the players they have, how much they can admire Benjie, etc, and never, ever talk about OBP.

Totally agree. it seems the context in which Bochy is speaking (at least, I hope) is to be more aggressive in attacking good pitches during hitter’s counts.

Unfortunately, because they so often seem to be guessing up there they let good pitches go on 2-0 and 3-1. It’s a lack of thinking out there that dooms most of these guys (especially a guy like Rowand).

Of course, so often their slop hacking put them down in the count, and also, let’s face it, even if they swing at fat fastballs down the gut, they’re just not good enough hitters to do much with it, so they foul it off or are late or get jammed instead of driving the ball.

Bonds stands alone.

I'd pretty much agree with this

Bochy is totally right that the hitters were late on way too many fastballs when they were (or should have been) looking for fastballs. But the hitters really needed to work more counts to get to that point, and they never did that.

Yep

With zero context, he’s not fundamentally wrong here. Good at-bats are more about having an approach…what Bochy doesn’t seem to realize is that the Giants hitters are so seldom in the situation he describes BECAUSE of this lack of approach.

I don’t think I’ve ever hated a manager more.

Listening to KNBR yesterday was maddening

Sabean was just as bad. Tom Tolbert starts his interview with him with a question like, “Hey Brian, it’s painfully obvious what’s wrong with this offense, right?”, to which Sabean started spewing the shit about getting marginally better and “executing” blah blah blah, without mentioning that they were THE WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE AT TAKING PITCHES AND WALKS BY FAR. Now I admit, I turned it off pretty quick, after hearing snippets of the same crapola in the presser earlier, so maybe he did address it at some point, but man, Tom gave him such an opening, and he reverted to the company line. So depressing.

Painfully obvious to everyone but Sabean and Bochy.

Pilling on & spearing!

Position Players more than 50 Pa’s and 50% or higher swing rate.

Name/ % the swing at a pitch / PA

Molinia/ 59.2/ 520
Panda/ 58.2 /633
Whiteside/ 53.4 / 134
Nate / 53.2 / 308
Uribe/ 52.4 / 432
Rowand / 51.6 / 546
Downs / 51.6 / 60
Frandsen/ 51.4 / 54
F. Sanchez/ 50.4 / 107
Velez/ 50.2 / 307
Aurlia/ 50.1 / 133

This means the Giants had a guy with better then even odds to swing at any pitch 3234 PA’s this season. The Giants had 6057 PA’s in ’09. So how does having 53% of plate appearances being used by players being more likely to swing at any pitch not aggressive enough?

To quickly gauge this as a whole team against the rest of baseball the Giants would swing at a pitch (any pitch) 50.4% of the time. The next closest team is the Cards at 48.0% . In a drop 2.4% off from the Cards there are 11 more teams. The Cards had 6 position players with over 50 PA’s that would swing over 50% of the time for a total of 1562 PA’s.

That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.
