Potential Non-Tender FA's
Here's a list of potential non-tender FA's that could be made available this off-season according to MLB Trade Rumors. One guy in particular I would like for the Giants to get if he becomes available is Conor Jackson. He played pretty good defense in LF in 2008, granted in a small sample. He had some weird fungal disease that caused him to miss most of this season but he should be healthy enough for winter ball. Jackson knows how to get on base and is a guy who's expected to have developing power....In bold are players I would consider trying to acquire if they became available (not in the first intro part, that's from MLB Trade Rumors, in the list, bolded part is guys I like)
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/10/nontender-candidates.html
Below I've listed non-tender candidates for each team; it's mostly speculative. Feel free to debate or add names in the comments; I may add to the list based on that. A few of these players - Jeff Francoeur, John Maine, Mark Teahen, and Delmon Young - are unlikely, but were included anyway.

Francoeur actually played very well for the Mets. Both he and John Maine will be tendered and back with them next year.

I prefer Johnson at 2B to Sanchez. The only question mark with him, however, is how he’ll bounce back from an injury plagued year.

the funny thing about tis comment is how it applies to both Sanchez & Johnson. Like you I prefer the odds on Johnson.

I would much rather preferred that Sabean traded Barnes or Alderson for Johnson than the moves he actually did make.

I can go with that as far as it goes. I still think those two would have intrested (or made it feasible to trade for) the Brewers for Hardy . That would have more useful still in my book.

Sign me up for a fat slice of bringing Accardo back to the bay. Conor Jackson’s also fairly enticing, depending on whether the plan would be to keep Panda at third and play him at first and maybe give second to Uribe (of course assuming the universal law of if Renteria doesn’t play a game the apocalypse will be upon us), or to play him in left.

I’ve always been irrationally high on Conor Jackson. I suspect everyone’s going to wait to see how he looks in winter ball before getting interested in him.
Scott Olsen strikes me as an ace loogy in the making.
Delmon Young. Wow.

why would the dbags non tender him? Even if they didn’t want him they know he has trade value. I hate to say it, but this fan post is Sabean like. Every offseason he rubs his “hands” together waiting for the non tenders to save him, and then the day comes and none of the good players on the list are available.

I don’t know whether they’ll nontender him, but when a guy makes $3 million a year and barely plays, you have to consider getting rid of him.
by Evan on Oct 6, 2009 8:05 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
he barely played because he was hurt. I’m not saying they’re going to keep him, just that they will try to get something for him and won’t just let him walk.

Jackson has a very serious illness, valley fever I believe. It takes months to get over, and you are very weak afterwords. The reason he is a non tender candidate is that it is even iffy that he would even have a useful contribution next season. He will have to build his strength and endurance. I gather that this illness is somewhat common in the phoenix area.

so why do we want him, if that’s the case? If he’s worth the risk to the Giants, he’s probably worth the risk to 20 other teams too, so he’ll probably go somewhere where he can rebuild his value and hit a lot of homeruns. Hitters want more to play at ATT. By the way, who diagnosed this disease? Larry David?

The answer is we don’t, unless we sign him to a multiyear deal. He will probably start the year off in the minors. He’s a good long term investment, but he shouldn’t be the sole target to improve the offense. IF the D’backs nontender him, he may come to AT&T, just to get a chance to play. For a player coming off of injury, he just wants the chance.

Valley Fever
it’s pretty common in the Central Valley, too. Most people who inhale the fungus show no symptoms and then, often of the time it goes away on its own or when treated with anti-biotics. For people w/ other immune problems it could be much more serious.

Delmon Young. Wow.
2.7 BB%? He belongs on the Giants! He can’t play defense and he’s never hit worth a lick in the majors. Pretty ugly development path for him.

That trade has turned out absolutely horrendously for the Twins. Garza and Bartlett have been worth 6.2 and 6.8 wins respectively over the last two years whilst Young has been worth -1.3 wins, Harris has been worth 0.9 wins and Pridie has contributed -0.3 wins.
Altogether it adds up to a 13.7 WAR swing for the Rays over the last 2 years. They probably would have made the playoffs comfortably the last two years as opposed to just missing out and having to go to a playoff. Ouch!

Bartlett’s 2009 season really is pretty weird. After never topping a .100 ISO he’s .170 for the year. His wOBA of .389 is about 60 points higher than his career average.
But yeah, in hindsight a pretty poor trade. I liked Young as a prospect but I think myself (and others included) ignored his lack of patience in the minor leagues. I think his age-to-level success blinded a lot of people. As a 19-year-old he put up a .968 OPS in AA. That’s pretty special for a young hitter.
by xanthan on Oct 6, 2009 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Epically bad trade, probably enough to undo the AJ trade from the Twin’s perspective.
So what I’m saying is, the Rays need to trade us Bartlett and Desmond Jennings for Edgar Renteria and Nate Schierholtz. It’s only fair.
by Evan on Oct 6, 2009 8:07 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not yet ready to write off Delmon. If I remember correctly his brother was a number 4 overall pick out of HS.
Dmitri looked like a bust and didn’t really find himself at the ML level until he was 24 years old when he posted a OPS of .845 for the Reds in 1998.
Delmon as a 24 year old this year put together a .303 . 322 .510 .832 in his 200 ABs since the all star break. He averaged a HR every 22 ABs during that stretch.
The Rays have easily one the trade so far, but I think Young showing signs of becoming an offensive force. He still has far and away the most upside of any player included in that trade IMO.
by Wonderful Terrific Monds on Oct 6, 2009 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m sure he could be as good or better than his brother, but that’s not all that valuable. Delmon’s a bad fielder, has apparently lost his speed, and has never had any plate discipline at all. With that combo he needs to hit as well as Pablo Sandoval to be a star.

There’s only 4 hitters that I’d be remotely interested in: Kelly Shoppach, Conor Jackson, Jeremy Hermida and Jack Cust.
Shoppach would be great to pair up with Posey as he provides some offense and is a very good defender and game caller.
Jackson has already been discussed, but he’d be at the top of my list assuming he’s gotten over his Valley Fever. Aside from this year where he had physical problems, he’s a good contact hitter who will take his walks and is a right handed bat w/ some pop that the Giants need. He’s also still in his prime and everyone loves a Cal guy, right? Unfortunately, I seriously doubt the D-Bags will let him go for nothing unless he’s on his death bed.
I like Hermida, but I really don’t think he’d put up much different numbers than Bowker could, so really I could pass.
Everybody knows about Cust. He’s gets on base and has a ton of power. He strikes out a ton, too and his defense his horrendous. He’d be a great guy to have off the bench and spot start in LF/1b, but I don’t think the Giants would know how to value him properly and Bochy would probably use him as a defensive replacement. he might cost too much, too, just to be a bench guy. He’s more of a DH candidate so I’d expect him to land in the AL.

Kelly Shoppach is decent, but he’s probably going to cost more money than we need to be spending on a catcher.

you’re probably right, but then again, he is a non-tender candidate. I’d actually be surprised if the Indians didn’t tender him a contract. Santana/Shoppach would be a good situation for them and they could trade Shoppach later on when Santana is ready to take over.

The prevailing opinion is that the DBacks would non-tender Jackson because they can’t get rid of Eric Byrnes awful deal and they have other OF’ers like Young, Upton and Parra and that at 1B, they want to give Brandon Allen a shot next year.

I like the Hermida idea because it would balance out our OF a bit, which is extremely lefty-heavy right now.

If we could somehow move Rowand’s contract I think Hermida would be an excellent replacement for him in CF, though, freeing up oodles of $$$ for a Holliday/Bay acquisition, and now your theory’s right back on track.

These players are all speculative at this point
but if the list is correct I would be interested in:
Ryan Church – Has the tools, and has played well when healthy… too bad he can’t seem to stay healthy
Jeremy Hermida – Still waiting for that break out year – Fish may be losing patience
John Buck – Would be half of the Buck and Buster tandem – as the back up. Has some pop and could provide some power as a pinch hitter.

It’d be nice to see him return to the Bay. But that’s just the sentimentalist in me. I’m not sure we need another mix-bag defender with little-to-no power and not-very-good batting average.

Chien-Ming Wang
Chien-Ming Wang would be the best gamble on the list for a bounce-back, but I don’t believe that the Yanks will non-tender him. Due to his horrible season this year, they have to believe that he’ll get the minimum $4M in arb – which is cheap enough for the Yankees to take a gamble on.
FWIW, I also believe that Garko will also be offerred arb by Sabean – his ego is just too large for him to admit he made such a horrible trade and mistake so quickly. Sabes has to figure that Garko won’t get more than $1M in arb, and that’s a drop in the bucket in his mind.
