All-time favorite SF Giants: pinch hitter

The voting is still pretty close in the shortstop category, though I think it's fair enough to call it for Rich Aurilia.

Current results are as follows: Rich Aurilia 39%, Omar Vizquel 32%, Chris Speier 10%, Jose Uribe 9%.

This one is going to be fun. I'm sure the write-in ballots are going to pour in on this one, so please be specific in your post titles. Simply vote "other", then make the title of your post JUST the name of the player. Anything else you have to say please include in the body of the post. If you are casting a write-in for someone who has already been mentioned, please simply title your post "+1".

This is the poll for the all-time favorite San Francisco Giants pinch hitter. To avoid ridicule, the imposition of over analysis, and the like, please vote for your FAVORITE player at each position. It doesn't necessarily have to be the best, meaning if Dan Gladden is your fave in CF, it's your prerogative to vote for him over Willie Mays.

Mike “Posion” Ivie. Helped make what should have been a pair of prolonged and painfuly bad seasons enjoyible.

That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

On one of those “on this date in SF history” things, they replayed a pinch hit grand salami he hit against the Bums late in the game to win it.

by boogalou on Oct 5, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

It was even better than that

He hit two pinch hit grand slams in that great hopeful 1978 year, and they were both during Chevy Payoff Innings (or whatever they were called). GM had to ante up two cars to fans because of Mike.

If that doesn’t seal the vote for him, what else does a guy have to do?

"The questions are so stupid. I don't believe in rivalries. I don't believe in curses. Wake up the damn Bambino, maybe I'll drill him in the ass."

Problem is, he shouldn't have been a PH

Mike Ivie is one of those guys who could have been a major star, but never got his act together. The Giants have had a ton of those guys too; massively talented guys who never seemed to have developed the maturity to play major league baseball at the level they were capable of. Guys who kept having nagging little injuries that took freaking forever to heal. Guys who got labeled ‘whiners’ and ‘crybabies.’ We should do this list too: the Mike Ivie all-stars. Chris Brown would be on it. Dave Kingman.

He got his act together. He had one freak injury that pretty much ended his career. Mike Ivie DOES NOT belong in either of the afore mention categories.

Crespo

At the time (99 or 00, I guess) I thought Felipe would have a breakout season and hit 20+ HRs if he got consistent PT.

2000 was a pretty decent year of PH’ing .290/.351/.443

I hated the way Renel used to pronounce Crespo’s name.

I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

The way she said it. She would scream so loud, you could almost hear it in South America.

Pretty much. I hate that she has to scream. I like the PA announcers to be more like Bob Sheppard of the Yankees or Roy Steele of the A’s (both whom are not doing it anymore). Neither screams.

I’m old school. I used to the old style rather than the yelling PA announcers. The guy who does the Warriors now is so awful, I won’t even go. Being screamed at for 2 1/2 hours is not my idea of fun.

I don’t go to Warriors game because it’s indoors and the PA volume is loud. Giants games are so bad in terms of volume.

2003 was fun to watch him go for 400 home runs. I still wish they didn’t give his starts to Feliz at the end of the season. If anything, they should have given Feliz starts at short and 3rd.

Although not so much after he became a starter, but in 1986(?) he was a stud pinch-hitter.

"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."
