I cannot think of how this can be a bad thing for the Giants. If he leaves, we did not overpay based upon 3 months of good. If he comes back it will be on market scale. Win Win.

Uribe tests are unreliable if not done properly.

Damn, you beat me to the urine test joke.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Uribe had a nice year for the Giants, but I’m guessing that his desire to test the market also stems from the fact that Sabean didn’t blow him away with an offer when they talked on the phone. I’m also guessing if Sabean didn’t get too excited about Uribe’s year, few GM’s did. I don’t think he’s going to do too well on the open market, and when his agent calls the Giants’ again, he better hope they haven’t filled the utility infielder position with somebody else. I think he’ll get a guaranteed deal somewhere, but it will be about 1 yr 2 million dollars.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

I know it isn’t ideal, but is it out of the question to consider Uribe as our everyday shortstop? Are we resigned to another year of Renteria?

I certainly would rather pay a bit over market value for Uribe if I knew that he’d keep a worthless Renteria out of the lineup, provide a bit of pop our of the 6 or 7 hole and be a serviceable glove at short.

Is it crazy to see him as a viable option as an everyday shortstop? The answer may be yes, I’d just like to know why.

They seem dead set on Renteria.

That Uribe didn’t unseat him until he went on the DL should tell you that the Giants never thought of Uribe as an everyday SS. As for why, I imagine that it’s some combination of Renteria’s contract and Uribe’s defense (which wasn’t bad enough to justify Renteria’s offense in 2009, but who knows going forward)

To sign Uribe again, you’d probably HAVE to guarantee him a starting position, at least until no other team does. I don’t even blame the Giants’ here. They’re already paying Edgar nine million dollars to play short, and they’re hopeful that it was the injury that caused the terrible season. I think Uribe would have been given a shot to beat out Edgar during spring training, but that would be only after Edgar was given a long look see. It was easier to pay off Dave Roberts last year, because he simply wasn’t healthy. Edgar is projected to be 100 % by the time camps open.

Oh, I don't really want Uribe back.

I’m more refering to the general question of “why didn’t Uribe unseat Renteria”, which is something I championed since, oh, June.
