Giants Sign Freddy Sanchez for two years
ChronLiveCSN RT @CSNBAYAREA: *******BREAKING Freddy Sanchez inks two-year deal with Giants http://tinyurl.com/yzl2r2t
The word is two more years but I can't see what the financial terms are. Good move? Your Thoughts? WHat would you like to see next? Dan Uggla at third? Jason Bay or Matt Holliday in left?
I think this is good news for the Giants. Provided he can stay healthy this solidifies the the 2 spot in the lineup so that we can go after more elsewhere.

As long as it’s not a ludicrous contract, meh.

Well, my first reaction was “GAAAH!” It echoed down the hallway.
It all depends, I guess … terms, his health. I mean, what little I saw of him impressed me. But we saw solittle of him.

HA!
Like he would have gotten a chance to begin with!
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

If he stays healthy and that is a big if after last season, then I don’t mind this deal.

According to Henry Schulman, it’s a two year, $12mil deal. Six mil a year? I’m not excited.

For once, I kind of disagree with jponry! I’m more in the GAH camp than the MEH camp.
Not really the savings I’d have preferred to see.

Bottom line: it’s a ridiculous waste of money. Lots of money for a declining veteran gritty gamer. Resources again wasted (see: Renteria) when they could’ve been used so much more wisely elsewhere.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

SF Chron says 2 years, $12M for FSanchez. Definitely on high side but next to Renteria/Rowand/Zito deals, it’s not an obvious Sabes fail.

I guess they must have done better than what it would have taken to pick up his option, because that deal sure got done fast.
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

not exactly shocking news here. It’s hard to say good or bad though until you see how much he’s being paid. My prediction though is if they got it done this fast, they gave him more than they should have.

yeah. I guess it’s pretty much what was expected though. It could have been better (2 yrs 10 million) or worse. (3 yrs 18 mill) I’ve come not to expect much negotiating skill out of our GM.

Exactly
Remember last off-season, jumping on Renteria in December when they could have gotten Cabrera for half as much?

he jumped on Edgar so fast that it almost cost us a draft pick. Fortunately the Tigers believed our denials (after all who would want Edgar anyway?) and didn’t offer him arbitration.

This is essentially where I’m at. The fact that Sabean is dealing before the WS is even over makes me think that he overpaid and he didn’t look at other options. Hell, we don’t even know if guys like Iwamura will be available. Why did he think that this had to get done so fast? Why is my reaction to this “Edgar Renteria for less money”?

Ok
Now that Sanchez is signed to play 2b for the next two seasons @ $6M a season why not bat him third in the batting order after getting a couple of table setters Then Sandoval could cleanup.

It’s tough to contruct a lineup around a sometimes singles hitter that has a poor OBP and can’t stay on the field. Other than that………go for it.

So it’s like we’re getting the same deal we were expecting at the trade deadline plus an 1 yr. extension at 4 mill. Obviously the money’s allocated a bit differently but I’m not hating this deal.

Why the big rush to sign this guy? It’s a bad deal, but graded on the Sabean curve, pretty “meh”.

About expressing the author’s bias, that is.
Doesn’t mean that the options are not applicable. After all, the overall sequence of events regarding Sanchez was bad financially for the Giants. The Giants, in trading him, took on the $8 million option and $0.5 million buyout making any restructured contract higher than a corresponding one in free agency.
Not to mention: ALDERSON
You wish you were named Frederick Deshaun...

I would have preferred Kelly Johnson at 2B, but...
…considering Sabean traded Alderson for Sanchez, it was a no-brainer to resign him. Sabean didn’t want to have to address the media about why he traded a top prospect for a two-month (less than that, considering injuries) rental.
The 2B solution would have been a lot easier if we hadn’t traded Alderson. I was not enthralled with the trade at the time, and I am less enthralled now.
I guess my thinking is, if Sabean and Co. liked Uggla so much, why not wait until the offseason, when acquiring him would have been more realistic? Part of being a good GM is planning properly. GMs who make hasty decisions (See the Mets trade of Kazmir for Zambrano) almost always hurt chances to better improve their team at a more appropriate time.
