The Anti-Sabean
Not that we didn't know this already, but this is a good counterargument to the "better to stick with the devil you know" crowd. There are smart people out there who are eminently qualified to run baseball teams. You just have to find them.

The Mariners new GM (Jack Zduriencik) is another example of a smart, forward thinking person that was plucked from another team.
Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at a position to be determined.
…and a guy that most of us knew very little about. That’s why it’s ok not to have an answer to the “well if not Sabean, then WHO?? Huh?Huh?” line of response.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

Utter frustration and futility.

Sabean's argument
Red Sox 93 wins 122 million dollar payroll
Giants 87 wins 82 million dollar payroll
Don’t ask Brian about the Red Sox two championships and the Giants’ records of the last few years.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
"Context" Sabean exclaimed upon further questioning, "Is that some kind of prison newspaper?"

Sabean doesn’t care about championships. It’s all about contending.

Having “meaningful” games in September = priceless
"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."

Nice article
Anti-Sabean indeed. Just keep in mind that Epstein makes way more bad moves than Sabean (or any GM) does, he just has the payroll to keep trying things until something works. Signing Lugo for $9.2 or DFAing Aardsma are probably worse moves than what Sabean did this year.
BLING BLING
You forgot the renteria signing.
The difference is that Epstein’s big moves tend to pay off. The closest thing to a major move he’s made backfiring was the Beckett/Ramirez trade, which was hardly a disaster. The Giants aren’t exactly poor here, people would be muc more forgiving of the Renterias and Robertses if Zito and Rowand were playing up to their salaries.
