Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Shawn (ny,ny): Why do reporters around the Mets keep mentioning that they need to sign B Molina to be their starting catcher to a 2 year deal? Also they mention the need to sign Hudson and trade Castillo who was the least of their problems last year. What does the Mets game plan need to be?

Klaw (2:15 PM) I don't know who those reporters are, but I guess they haven't seen Molina play this year. He's terrible. I won't rank him on my top 50 free agents at all.

I mean, Benj wasn't GOOD this year

But with this FA class, he would have to be somewhere in the top 15-20

Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.

I mean, Benj wasn’t GOOD this year

It goes beyond him not being good. He was legitimately bad. He’s old, he’s fat, he’s one of the worst hitters in all of baseball…I can see a pretty good case for him being on the bottom of the FA list…

by Missing Barry on Oct 30, 2009 6:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Except the FA list is pretty crappy and he’s clearly the best catcher on it. The other options are Varitek (assuming his option is declined, which is likely, but he may resign with the Sox for less now that they have V-Mart and only need him to be a backup) and Pudge at the top of the class. V-Mart and Olivo both have options which you can bet will be picked up.

You’re right Keith. That, and Thomas Neal isn’t for real and Brandon Crawford is just a glove.

The very bad man traded my son...So now I'd like you all to meet my new son, Ryan "Aaron" Garko...Dammit it's just not the same!

by boonitez on Oct 29, 2009 11:08 PM PDT reply actions

He may yet be right on both of those, too. I certainly hope he’s wrong, but it’s not like Crawford did so great once he got promoted to AA (.294 OBP)… and Neal, well, he had a nice year, let’s see if he can repeat it outside of the Cal league and show that kind of power two years in a row.

Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

by Smoke on the Water on Oct 30, 2009 12:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Hmmm

Crawford doesn’t have much power, has poor contact skills, no plate discipline, and isn’t fast. What is he except for a glove?

He wasn’t even a glove the one game I saw him play in CT! (Yes, yes I know, SSS all around)

I can’t understand why fans around here are so negative about our minor league prospects, yet curse out Bochy and Sabean for bringing in and playing nothing but veterans. If you think the kids stink you should applaud veteran FA signings.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

I like Crawford, but more for what he can be than what he is.

Please hit better, Randy Winn.

by oldjacket on Oct 30, 2009 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it’s the quality of the veterans that is the problem.

We don’t curse our minor league prospects because they’re so awesome. Likewise for the veteran signings. The team doing one thing poorly as a response to being unable to do another thing well is not really cause for applause.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

You really have to look at the different decisions on a case by case basis. Most of them are bad. Signing a FA SS over last offseason was perfectly reasonable – our production at SS was horrible and we didn’t have any capable MLB caliber players there. Signing Renteria on the basis of a “good second half” was stupid, and the type of crap Sabean pulls constantly. We’ve had OF prospects come up (and pretty much all of them fail cause they aren’t good prospects) a lot recently and most of them get demoted. That’s fine – makes sense that we didn’t stick with a guy like Linden. Then we get a prospect who’s a legitimate MLB starter, and we bench him in favor or Winn/Velez (Lewis). Stupid. You’re generalizing a philosophy, and sure, you could make a case for signing veteran FA’s at time. Nothing wrong with that. Once you start looking at the specifics of Sabean’s moves, though, then you start finding why we’re so negative…

by Missing Barry on Oct 30, 2009 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions

I think the Renteria signing was a good-ish idea at the time (a little high on the money, but otherwise OK) but panned out very badly. He was a much better hitter in the NL over his career and we didn’t figure to be going anywhere, so if he put up decent production that would be fine. The problem was he played hurt, played bad, and we needed him to play well. In hindsight, therefore, bad idea (and Sabean should be getting flak for it because he’s supposed to prepare the team for the next season, and Renteria clearly did not help do that). But I wouldn’t necessarily classify the signing as an awful one then.

by quincy0191 on Oct 30, 2009 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m sorry, but “he was always good in the NL” just isn’t a legitimate reason to sign someone. When something that ridiculous is used to defend a deal, you know that it’s probably a pretty big screw-up.

He didn’t say Neal wasn’t for real – he said he wants to see him do it again against advanced pitching, which isn’t unreasonable.

SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL GIANT PROSPECTS ARE REAL.

I mean just look at the Major League club. Name ONE prospect that hasn’t worked out! I dare you! Would we be a 88 win ball club if our prospects didn’t work out?

KLaw…I’m a little behind the ball here, but I’m wondering what your opinion on the Bochy/Sabean resignings are?

Klaw (1:48 PM)
Sabean’s done enough the last few years to restock the system that I didn’t object to it the way that a lot of Giant fans (well, the ones who read my stuff) did. Bochy, on the other hand, should have been canned.

Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW

by jctGamer on Oct 30, 2009 10:29 AM PDT reply actions

That’s pretty much where we should be. Sabean isn’t a good GM, and we should be able to do better, but he’s not Dayton Moore and he’s built successful clubs. There is absolutely zero reason for Bruce Bochy to be managing a professional baseball team.

KLAW, is Jermaine Dye toast or what? Will that prevent Brian Sabean from signing him?
