Sign him, Sox.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Yeah. The cost of Jason Bay

Wonder if the Giants would really consider going more than 4/60 for him. Seems to have all the makings of another Rowand contract filling up the OF.

In other news slightly OT, thevaultsky reported that Thomas Neal was taking grounders at 1b yesterday

If Bay signs early, then expect the bidding for Holliday to go through the roof.

Abreu or bust...

and so on down the line until we’re left with a one armed Xavier Nady for $10 million a year. But at least he didn’t cost as much as Holliday!

WE NEED A BIG BAT

As we enter the offseason, I might hate the phrase “big bat” more than I do “pop”.

Ugh.

We need a big bat with some crazy pop.

What?

I was just saying we need this:

Apparently, Jose Molina and Jerry Hairston are the keys to winning the World Series, so really we just need to sign them.

We need to sign Eric Hinske.

I’d also like to point out that number can now be updated from 2 to 3…

What part of Hinske is made of porcelain? We need a pie chart for that.

AL is like 23092350834 times better than the NL, though. So that makes Hinske infinite times better than Lincecum.

Allow me to quote myself from a few days ago
The post also reminds me
It drives me crazy always hearing, "WE NEED A BIG BAT!!!!!!!!!!!!" It’s that type of thinking that’s going to lead to Jermaine Dye being a Giant. We don’t need "a big bat," we need a better lineup. Just simply being "A BIG BAT!!!!!!" (or someone’s idea of one) doesn’t mean a player is a good fit or worth the cost. Dammit.

while what you’re saying is clearly true, it’s not realistic to think we’re going to release every starter on the team except Pablo, and replace them with better hitters. It’s going to take a move here and a move there, via trades, FA’s and minor leaguers. We’re stuck at SS and center, and blessed at one of the corners with Sandoval, so we have to look at the other five positions for our upgrades. Although Freddy Sanchez is not loved around here, he’s a clear upgrade over Manny Burriss at second base. Buster is an upgrade over Bengie Molina. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Jason Bay, defensive warts and all, is an upgrade over the plan of Velez/Torres for left field. I’m not advocating spending that kind of money on him, but I could live with it considering his superiority over what he would be replacing. Now you’ve upgraded three positions this offseason and you’re well on your way to a better offense.

I know this isn't the popular sentiment

But, obviously, if they were to sign Bay to a contract like this, they would have to expand payroll.

And if they’re expanding payroll anyway, why not sign Bay?

And as far as the Rowand complaints, they’re valid. But Bay is a year younger than Rowand, and his numbers are better.

Rowand the year before his signing: .309/.374/.515 – 27 HRs

Bay this year: .267/.384/.537 – 36 HRs

In conclusion, DINGERZ

Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.

Because Bay isn't worth that kind of money?

You’re only looking at offensive numbers. Bay is one of the worst defensive players in baseball.

I’d kind of like to see what phrases Grant comes up with to describe Eugenio Velez, LF/defensive replacement.

Think about that for a second. We’d be replacing our LF in late game situations with someone once described as a drunken, gloveless Ben Grimm on defense.

Still the loving, adoptive father of Hector Sanchez. And who doesn't love switch-hitting catchers with power and patience?

by tedfordfan on Oct 29, 2009 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because if you take Bay’s defense into account, it gets a bit hairy.

Bay’s got some bizarre day-night splits from this past season. He hit 31 of his 36 HRs at night, and his night OPS is 128 points higher than his day OPS.

So, if the Giants sign him, Eugenio Velez will be playing a lot on weekends.

15 million? for what 4-5 years?

I’ll take my money to next year’s FAs thanks. We’re better off improving the Infield LOLgasm in this market.

Look for a bargain LF. If that fails? Try Lewis and search for trade.
