Breaking News: Rohn Out As Fresno Manager
Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that the Giants have let Dan Rohn go. Rohn, a three-time Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year winner, has been manager of the Fresno Grizzlies since 2007, guiding the team to two of their four best finishes since starting play in 1998.
Before coming to the Giants’ system, Rohn was a coach in the Seattle Mariners’ system for nine years. He managed the Triple-A Tacoma Rainers from 2001 through 2005, and in the process won one co-championship and three Manager of the Year awards (2001, 2004, & 2005). After the 2005 season, Rohn was promoted to the major league team as an administrative coach, a role made specifically for him. Speculation had raged that season that Rohn was being groomed to replace manager Mike Hargrove, but Rohn was let go in mid-September of that season when his position was eliminated.
A new Fresno manager is not likely to be named until at least the late winter, the normal time for minor league coaching staffs to be finalized and announced. Two likely candidates to replace Rohn are current Connecticut Defenders manager Steve Decker, and Fresno hitting coach Hensley Meulens.
There were no immediate indications behind the motives of Rohn’s release. The move was simply termed a personnel decision.

Good job, Goofus!
"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."

I bet Bengie Molina would make a great minor-league manager! What say ye, Sabes?

Sakata left because he was offered a managing job in Japan. He probably left because he wasn’t promoted, but he wasn’t asked to leave a la Rohn.

Are MiLB coaches assigned by the manager or the organization? Basically, are other (his) coaches going to be dropped as well?

Both have a say, and every organization has their own rules. From what I am familiar with within the Giants, the minor league managers are given some rope to assemble their staff, but the organization gets veto power. In some cases, however, some coaches are pushed dues to organizational reasoning.

So it seems that Muelens might be a candidate for the managing job, so he still has a spot, regardless. What’s your opinion on if Rice will be kept? Since he’s already been promoted from within the organization I would assume that he’s safe as well.

Rice worked with Rohn in Tacoma as well, for several years. I’d be surprised if he stuck around, TBH.

Rice also worked with Decker in San Jose in 2008, but I agree with Baron…I wouldn’t be surprised if Rice is not back, though I wouldn’t know whether or not it’d be the Giants’ choice or his.
Ross Grimsley has had more than his share of success in the system, albeit all with the more pitching-friendly east coast teams. Of note, Grimsley worked with Madison Bumgarner each of his first two seasons, and also presided over Pucetas’ breakout 2007 season. With both having a good chance to be in Fresno next season, it would not surprise me at all to see Grimsley come out west.

speaking of milb pitching coaches
whatever happened to Trevor Wilson? Just a few years ago he seemed to be on the fast track and now he’s gone all Keyzer Soze on us.
Probably became fertalizer.
After questioning Sabean about something true concern, like, “why do you want us to teach the pitchers to pitch to contact and exploit impatient hitters but you want our hitters to be aggressive and make contact at any cost?”
I can’t speak as to the reason.
All I can say is that I was told that he left on his own accord with no animosity. A return to baseball hadn’t been ruled out when I asked (the season after he left).

Good points, Brute. Thanks for the informed speculation!

I would like to correct myself on one point...
I should say all of Grimsley’s recent success has been on the east coast. The man’s been with the organization for a damned long time.

My vote for new Fresno manager
Bruce Botchy. He could even take plenty of veteran savvy down with him; his experience in SF and SD make him the ideal candidate to manage the AAAA squad.
Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."
Nobody puts Bengie in a corner!
The problem with Bruce in AAA is, obviously, that he’d never let the AA call-ups get on the field.

Well of course not
no AAA experience! That’s why he’s so desperately needed, to make sure Ramon Ortiz gets enough starts.

Exactly!
If Bochy had been in Fresno this past year, Posey would have sat on the bench behind Steve Holm.
