Wow1 97 MPH Throw From The Outfield at the age of 16!

Just make him a pitcher if his vison truely negatively impacts his ability to hit.

Frankly, we have to sign this guy

Given the Villalona situation, and the possibility that Mateo could still be a legitimate prospect, I really am keeping my fingers crossed that the Brass gets ’er done.

BTW, I have a rare eye condition that cannot be corrected with Lasik nor glasses. It’s called Keratoconus, and it revolves around a mis-shapen cornea. I don’t think Mateo has anything like this though. FWIW, I see about 20/200 without hard contacts, and around 20/20 with proper lenses. I was not surprised to hear that most ballplayers have superior vision, but at the same time, I think that a lot of people are really reading too much into the 20/30 reports. Someone who is used to the fast pace of high quality baseball needs to rely on a broad range of tools, and the difference between 20/30 and 20/20 is not going to mean much- either way, you can see the baseball at every step of the pitch.

Hooray for non-correctible eye conditions!

I have optic nerve damage in my right eye suffered during an anoxic event at birth! Apparently, the umbilical cord should not be worn as a scarf. Somebody could have told me that before I tried to show my new style to the world.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

You sure it was the “umbilical cord”? [nudge nudge… wink wink]

I don’t know what you could possibly be referring to. I wasn’t even born yet. I was in the process of being born.

Giants need to get this done. It’s a risk worth taking.

Wagner is starting to sound a like a bit of a different sort of a prospect than I first expected. I always though of him as more of a jack of all trades CF when it really seem like he’s got premium RF tools with pop and arm strength in spades. It seems like he’s got a lot of present skills that we’re hoping RafRod will eventually develop.

I had this, too. I had cornea transplants in both eyes.

by kaliber on Oct 29, 2009 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow

It’s rare as all heck. How has your vision been since the transplants? I often find myself wanting a life after rigid gas permeable lenses, but the 5% failure rate of the surgery is high enough that doctors won’t do it unless the issue is forced, which it is not in my case.

I wonder, though...

…if it might be more of an issue in the field, when trying to get a read on a batted ball. The distance from the plate to an outfielder’s standard position is 5-6 times farther than from the mound to the plate.

Bo knows prospects

"But I thought Mateo was still the most complete player."

He may not know anatomy though…

Sorry, that was in poor taste. Seriously, it is great to hear the Giants are most likely going to sign Mateo. I hope he reaches his potential, not just as a Giants fan, but from a human interest feel-good perspective. Plus, it would be payback to the Cards for swindling us with David Green.

by baseballjunkie on Oct 29, 2009 11:58 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

they swindled us with Ray Sadecki for Orlando Cepeda as well. However, Mateo might have opened some eyes (no pun intended) with his performance at this event. More teams might get involved and his agent will probably demand a higher price.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

by rxmeister on Oct 30, 2009 5:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I was afraid of that

I knew nothing about the Bo Jackson Challenge, but I would imagine Mateo’s agent was holding back on signing a contract until his client could showcase his talent. The Giants (and other teams) were probably also waiting for the tournament to see how Mateo performed. Hopefully Mateo and his agent will remember that the Giants still believed in him after the Cards dumped him and were the first team to look into signing him. As we saw with the Villalona signing, loyalty and a good relationship do seem to mean something in these Latin American contract dealings, if we are to believe the reports that Villalona accepted less to sign with the Giants because of the relationship he and his agent had built with the team.

by baseballjunkie on Oct 30, 2009 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we should offer a discounted deal plus pay for legal counsel to help Wagner squeeze the rest from a settlement the Cards. Spite is fun!
