I still can't believe it.
We traded Alderson and Barnes and we got 25 games of Sanchez and the lesser half of the Travis Ishikawa platoon.
The Red Sox packaged Barnes and Alderson clones (the clones are always slightly inferior to the original DNA subjects), paired them with a younger version of Jonathan Sanchez and got VMart.
AND Sabean got a new deal.
I guess if you go by the law of regression we should be due for Adrian Gonzalez for Conor Gillaspie, Merkin Valdez and Garko.

Seriously man no could have seen F-chez getting hurt and missing that much time,
And the fact that Garko didn’t play was Bochys fault.
Freddy has averaged about 130 games a season in his career so its not like he had a long history of injuries. I know he was hurt before the trade, but our Dr.s cleared him as ok, maybe they should be fired!
Secondly the Drs. cleared his knee, he missed most of his time due to a shoulder. That’s called bad luck.
I hate our GM and by no means am sticking up for him, but its not like he traded Lincey for Harden, its over and done with move on!

130 games a season in his career isn’t very many… that means he misses 32 games a year.

You really think Sabean didn't influence the Doc's decission?
He played immediately folowing the trade then sat out like 5 games with a bad knee, then he had the mysterious “shoulder” injury.
by Cody_ransom on Oct 26, 2009 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
What, he strongarmed the doctors to clear Sanchez? Why, so the trade would look worse?
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
by JRPhillips on Oct 26, 2009 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, because he felt pressure to make a move
and he truly believed 40 games of Sanchez could make a difference.
by Cody_ransom on Oct 27, 2009 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But if Sabean “influenced” the doctor’s decision, he basically said, “Sure he’s an injury risk and very likely could miss a good bit of playing time this season, thus making this trade look ridiculously stupid – and ME stupid by extension… But dammit, doc, you’d BETTER give him the okay to play, regardless of whether or not you think his body will hold up, or else!”
Yeah, I don’t see that happening.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
by JRPhillips on Oct 27, 2009 10:20 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I see it going something like this
Doc: Well Mr. Sabean we took an MRI and did some range of motion excercises and it looks like he could take another 10-15 days to heal. We might be able to accelerate that with intense PT but there’s no telling for sure.We would typically recommend a player be moved to the 15-day DL if this were one of our players.
Sabean: 10-15 days? Could we be optimistic and hope for 8-9?
Doc: Like I said, Its always possible that response to treatments will surpass expectations.
Sabean: Well, whatever you write in that report make sure he’s healthy enough to be acquired. I don’t care if he needs to miss a handful of games we need his bat to stay in this thing.
Doc: Well that isn’t what we would recommend.
Sabean: Well you didn’t recommend a 15 day DL for Rich Aurilia either. If I were you I’d recommend the acquisition. Man, Conte never gave me this kind of crap.

From AP story on ESPN regarding Sanchez's injuries.
Dated 9/26
“Sanchez said he originally hurt the knee in Arizona just before the Pirates arrived in the Bay Area in late July and knew he likely would need surgery.”
From Baggs on 9/21:
UPDATE: The Giants just rang to the press box to report that Sanchez left with a "twisted" left knee. We’ll know more postgame.
And here’s the best I could find on when and how the shoulder was injured from USA Today:
“The shoulder has been bothering him since he felt it on a swing doing some early work in the cage, but played through it for two weeks. During a game at New York during the Giants’ recent road trip, it became too painful to swing.”
So he played with it for two weeks and it just got that much worse after two weeks? All this time playing with a knee that he was told in Pittsburgh would need surgery? Sounds mysterious to me.
by Cody_ransom on Oct 27, 2009 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry that shoulder injury thing was dated 8/25
He played every AB of the Mets series that ended on 8/17. That article said he played through it for two weeks, that means he first felt pain on or around 8/3. He was acquired on 7/30 with a knee that he knew needed surgery. Somehow he passed the physical, and 4 days later gets a mysterious shoulder injury, plays through it for two weeks then proceeds to miss 30 of the next 42 games, including the last 12 of the season which were admitted by the Giants to be a result of a re-injury of his knee.
The shoulder thing was total BS and Sabean covering himself because he panicked and traded for an injured player because it was the best he could do, because he’s a retard.
by Cody_ransom on Oct 27, 2009 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just kind of surprising
that anyone would buy the line about his shoulder when Sanchez knew he needed surgery before the trade and had it performed as soon as the season was over. He missed 32 games and you’re blaming it on a shoulder? He had knee surgery on 9/30!?

So when I google "Freddy Sanchez Shoulder" all I get is stuff about his previous shoulder injuries
Only one article I found mentioned his mysterious 2009 shoulder tweek.
Here is an AP article from March 2008.
Recurring shoulder pain worries Pirates’ Freddy Sanchez
Posted 3/21/2008 6:18 PM | Comment | Recommend E-mail | Save | Print | Subscribe to stories like this
By Alan Robinson, AP Sports Writer
BRADENTON, Fla. — Second baseman Freddy Sanchez felt pain Friday in his surgically repaired right shoulder, a major setback that may force him to begin a second consecutive season on the Pittsburgh Pirates’ disabled list.
Sanchez didn’t make any throws while playing six innings of a 5-1 exhibition loss to Cincinnati, only the second time he has appeared defensively this spring. The pain occurred when he threw between innings and during pregame warmups.
“I’m very concerned now. I was hoping after the first day (in the field Wednesday) that this day would be easier, and I’d be able to work through it a little better. But it kind of seemed like it was worse,” Sanchez said. “It’s got me concerned.”
Sanchez received treatment after playing, and the Pirates’ medical staff will re-evaluate his condition on Saturday – when he is scheduled to start against Tampa Bay. Sanchez doubts if he will play.
“I don’t feel like I could,” Sanchez said. “I’m giving it all I can out there and trying to play through it, but it doesn’t feel right. It felt a little different today, the more I threw I got worse. … It’s not good.”
Sanchez wasn’t pulled from the game, he said, “Because I wanted to play through it and see what would happen if a real ground ball got hit to me.”
Sanchez, the 2006 NL batting champion and one of the league’s most consistent hitters the last two seasons, had what was described as minor shoulder surgery during the final week of last season. The 15-minute procedure was designed to repair a joint problem that caused Sanchez to receive periodic shots of cortisone last season.
At the time, the Pirates said Sanchez could resume normal work outs in less than two months. But the two-time All-Star infielder’s shoulder hasn’t felt right since camp opened last month, though there was no suggestion until now he wouldn’t be ready for the March 31 opener in Atlanta.
Sanchez feels fine at the plate – he was 1-for-3 Friday and is hitting .364, mostly as a designated hitter. The shoulder pain occurs mostly when he throws the ball.
“It’s just frustrating,” said Sanchez, who began last season on the disabled list with a knee injury but bounced back to hit .304 and drive in 81 runs in 147 games. “Even if it was a little better than it was a couple of days ago, it would be a different story, but …”
I guess it could have been a shoulder injury though, he certainly has a history.
Man there are a lot of people who want to sign this reanimated corpse for 3 years? What have you learned from Dave Roberts?

This is not a good argument – Alderson and Barnes were good trading chips and the Giants didn’t get enough value out of them (and they are now without many good chips that they can afford to trade.)

Outperforming older players.
Probably a pretty reliable variable when gauging prospect value. Just a hunch.
Barnes was younger than most SP in the Cal League and a top 7-8 pitcher in that league.
by Cody_ransom on Oct 26, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If that was the best the Giants could have gotten for those two, they should have just held on to them. Perhaps you then keep those guys as depth later and trade Bumgarner or Sanchez instead – and you feel more comfortable doing so because you still have pitching prospects who seem relatively close to the majors in your system and aren’t just replacement level fifth starter types (Pucetas, Martinez.)
The fact is that the Giants had pitching depth, they traded a very good chunk of it and in return they didn’t get anyone who actually solves any of their problems as a team or is a long-term option. That’s a problem. We might be able to rebuild it – there are some good arms in the lower levels of the system, but they might not have value for awhile and the Giants still have a lot of holes on the major league team and very few resources/options to fill them.

Mordecai
The sniper was my first. I have him at level 26 and I have Brick at level 47 (powerleveled by someone else, didn’t get there myself). The sniper is fun, obviously a different style of play, and his special is awesome when you power it up (need to get to level 21-25 to really use it). Brick is just a tank.

Brick took like 2-3 hours of sitting in a game with a level 50 storming through the final area on his 3rd play through. The hard part was just staying alive.
I’ve put about 15 hours into my sniper. Getting to New Haven is key, because you can farm two item boxes there to really upgrade your equipment.

Back in college, we played a ton of Counterstrike. One of the kids at my school decided to make a map that was set up exactly like one of the on campus dorms. We all thought it was awesome, because he did a pretty good job with it. Then, while playing, we realized we were simulating a school shooting (or at least that’s how it would be seen by over reactionary idiots [this is post Columbine, FWIW]). That ended quickly.

Let’s be clear on how the concept of “regression” works. Because something unusual happened in the past (let’s say some hitter had a clutch performance over some period), it doesn’t mean he’s due for the opposite to happen. Rather, in the future he should perform at his true talent level, and the bigger the sample of “true talent level” performance, the closer the average of the clutch past and normal future get to his true talent level. We can get into limits and such, but I think this brief explanation should be enough.
What that means for this example? We are not due an Adrian Gonzalez or anything like that – we should expect to get our “true talent level”, whatever the equivalent of that is in this example (I’m not really sure, it’s kind of a stretch of a metaphor), in the future.

I thought CodyR was talking about Hey Joey not VMart in this equation. Your reading makes more sense.

I guess if you go by the law of regression we should be due for Adrian Gonzalez for Conor Gillaspie, Merkin Valdez and Garko.
This will happen when Boras comps us for Zito. (Like, NEVER).

just because sabean could not foresee Garko's meltdown and Sanchez's injury!!!!
He gave up way to much future for a very tenuous and potentially expensive present. I thought it was a bad deal then and I think it is a bad deal now. Even if our former prospects never make it MLB, but indeed they will and somehow come back to haunt the giants in any and every way possible.

do you recall how many ABs he had?

I'm sorry
But I would much rather have Masterson, who has been used like the Giants used Sanchez early on (bullpen to starter back to pen) by the Red Sox. Nick Hagadone, who has much higher upside than either Alderson or Barnes, a LHP who throws in the mid to high 90s, with a plus slider. Yes, he was coming off TJ surgery, but he’s got great stuff and the profile to be either a legit ML closer or a frontline starter. He allowed a .167 BAA last year. Hagadone was the Red Sox 3rd ranked prospect last year and that was despite missing most of 2008 to injury. Before he got hurt he was a candidate to be brought up in September to help their bullpen.
Masterson was the 4th ranked prospect for Boston going into 2008, ranked only behind Buchholz, Ellsbury and Lars Anderson.
On top of those 2 highly touted guys, the Red Sox threw in Bryan Price who has good stuff but didn’t pitch very much at Rice, and is either a future rotation or back end bullpen guy.
Stop acting like the Red Sox gave up a bag of balls in exchange for V-Mart. I thought everyone was in love with Shapiro here anyway?
The trade that looks bad is Freddy Sanchez, not the Garko one. It’s not Garko’s fault he got hardly any playing time here, blame Bochy for that.

All this is agreeable. Red Sox gave up more for V-mart then the Giants for Mr. F and Garko.
Atlest that is the belief. We over rate our prospects and everyone on the planet over rates the Red Sox.

Nerdy reference
For the English localization of this anime Naruto, they gave the main character the catch phrase “Believe it!”

I think Naruto is too popular now to be nerdy.
Although, I’ve only seen when they’re all still young, and even then I missed some toward the end of that. I haven’t seen any of this older stuff.
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

You didn’t miss anything. The non-story filler at the end of the first part of the Naruto anime may be the nadir of television history.

Yeah, I guess. I stopped watching the anime when it began relying on tons and tons of filler arcs. I only read the manga now.

I think if I was going to invest my time in reading a huge manga right now, though, I’d pick up One Piece first. It comes way too highly recommended.
In terms of graphic media, I just finished up Y: The Last Man, and I’m waiting for Scott Pilgrim 6 and for RASL to make any real progress. In the meantime, I’m slowly catching up on my Hellboy.

Oh man, I love One Piece so much. Even in the anime when there’s filler, it’s actually tolerable. Have you heard about Dragon Ball Kai? It’s all the original DBZ episodes but updated to HD AND with the filler taken out! There isn’t much new animation, but they did make new opening and ending animations. I’ve only seen the first episode, but it’s already brought back warm fuzzy memories.

I saw you mention Dragon Ball Kai somewhere, but I didn’t know what it was or how it fit in. I might be checking that out.

Considering the filler was taken out, yes. It got pared down from 300 episodes or so to 100.

My understanding was that each episode was slightly shorter, but that was probably a misunderstanding.

Never heard of it, but from the look of that picture, I’m going to have to disagree. That looks pretty damn nerdy.

I hate that I now know this. Fucking dubs. The だってばよ horseshit was bad enough, but “Believe it!” somehow manages to be even more obnoxious.
