Ignorant East Coaster with a question

Do a lot of people swim in the Pacific?

My only time to the west coast I had to rescue my girlfriend at the time from drowning in Seaside, OR. She went down to “the beach” and the next thing she knew a wave came up to her shoulders and down she went….

I have swam in ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, NC, SC and FL….

My one experience with swimming on the West coast was a lot different from my east coast experiences…It seemed like the Pacific was a lot rougher and colder….Was this an isolated incident of just the way it is?

I never have. That shit is cold.

Wait, I did in Hawaii. Not so cold there.

It’s a lot more common in Southern California than it is in the Bay Area.

Well, large ocean is large.

I’ve swum in Thailand, Mexico, Australia and Hawaii. But I assume you’re asking about the West Coast. I’ve never gone in for a dip anywhere north of Santa Barbara. Yeah it’s cold, plus there are riptides and rocks and whales and shit.

Also: sharks. Around the Bay Area, there’s this “red triangle” where there’s an unusually high concentration of sharks.

Wasn’t there a controversy with the Yankees in previous years where there was a “rain out” and there wasn’t any rain at all?

more than once the Yankees have used the prediction of rain to call a game early when the weather wasn’t bad enough to call a game. They’ve done it in the past to rest their bullpen or avoid an unfavorable pitching matchup. I think playoff games are in the hands of the commissioner though.

of course now that I’ve said that the sky has opened up! The desire of Fox to have this game in prime time has caused this postponement. I guess in NY we’ll be getting a “Cops” marathon instead.

ok upon further review, this writer is horrible. I only read one paragraph and decided all credibility is gone based on the number of errors he made:

Though San Francisco has already showed it won’t stand pat in regards to its offense by deciding not to bring back Carney Lansford. It’s hard to blame Lansford though. What hitting couch wouldn’t have trouble with the Giants’ lineup? As Lansford stated, a team can get by with one or two free swingers, but not a team full of them. And that’s exactly what the Giants had.

But don't hate, commemorate!

On this night, seven years ago, we were one game away…

San Francisco took a 16–4 blowout win in a game in which the Angels never led. The most well-known moment in this game occurred when Giants first baseman J.T. Snow scored off a Kenny Lofton triple. Three-year-old batboy Darren Baker, son of Giants manager Dusty Baker, ran to home plate to collect Lofton’s bat before the play was completed and was quickly lifted by the jacket by Snow as he crossed the plate, with David Bell close on his heels. Had Snow not acted quickly, Darren could have been seriously injured.

MLB should take the attitude that we’ve got the best fuckin’ sport, especially post-season, and we’re going to play and show our games in a way that shows off the game the best way possible, and in a way that serves our fans the best.

That would mean starting the post season on Oct. 1st, day’s off for travel only, a mix of day and night games, and always schedule games on Fri, Sat, and Sunday.

based on ratings, football is the “best fuckin’ sport.” It will be interesting to see the NY ratings with the Yankees’ game tonight up against the Giants-Cardinals in the Meadowlands. If the baseball game was a regular season game the football game would blow it away. An important playoff game will be interesting though.

Looking at True Blue LA, apparently Bill James has Randy Wolf projected as having a 2.87 ERA next year. Considering he’s never had an ERA better than 3.20, and he’s turning 34 next season, that seems slightly unrealistic.

If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

by esseffgeez on Oct 25, 2009 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

St Louis Post-Dispatch:

The club remains extremely sensitive to reaction about McGwire’s return. After setting the single-season home run record by hitting 70 in 1998, McGwire became the face of an ongoing controversy surrounding the prevalance of performance-enhancing drugs in the game. The club offered him a spot as a guest hitting instructor during 2007 spring training, an invite McGwire briefly entertained before rejecting due to a family issue.

McGwire has operated a de facto off-season hitting camp in Orange County for a number of major-league hitters in recent years. Current Cardinal outfielders Skip Schumaker and Matt Holliday along with recently-traded outfielder Chris Duncan are among the campers. Daric Barton, Bobby Crosby and Garrett Atkins also have attended.

If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

With Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima returning to Japan and no other catcher with significant experience on the 40-man roster, Bengie Molina suddenly is a candidate to return to the AL West.

Wagner Mateo came all the way from the Dominican Republic to Florida this past week to show major league scouts he’s not damaged goods and that he was worth the $3.1 million bonus he almost got from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Mission accomplished.

Mateo, 16, won the first Bo Jackson 5-Tool Championship Saturday night at Roger Dean Stadium with an impressive display of hitting, fielding, throwing, running and hitting with power against some of the top amateur talent in the world.

Mateo, who does not speak English, was all smiles as he posed with Jackson after the event and received his handsome award.

“He says, ‘Thank god, the trip was worth it so I could show people who I really am,’” said Edgar Mercedes, his agent and translator. “He feels super.”

Dude, thing is, it’s week 7, there’s 9 weeks left in the season, i’m still excited to see what’s gonna happen. With Smith you have a QB that’s mobile, can make throws on the run, a stronger arm, and now with a bunch of confidence. Even if they lose next week, it still might be good enough to make a run at the division

by PiKAgiant on Oct 25, 2009 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fact is dude, is he any worse than what Hill has been for the past year or so? All Hill is is a game manager, and possession QB who hardly turns the ball over. What you get with Smith is someone who throws the ball downfield and has at least a respectable arm compared to what Hill had. I’m not knocking Hill at all, i’m just saying Smith has better tools than Hill

Well you didn’t say this 49er team… in fact you said “eternal optimism” so i assumed this was a long standing gripe. Either way, it’s easier for a team with clear flaws to make the playoffs in the NFL than it is in the MLB.

I figure…it’s a wait and see. Maybe Smith has learned a thing or two since last season. I don’t know.

Other teams have 6 weeks worth of Shaun Hill game film to analyze and plan off of, they weren’t expecting Smith. We’ll see what happens when teams get a handle on what Smith can do and comeup with a game plan for him.

With Hill, you get what you get – there’s no other trick he can pull out of his hat, once you scheme for him you’re done.

by Merope on Oct 26, 2009 6:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep, it is a wait and see, you’re right, the only thing i have a problem with however is that shouldn’t they have already had a tape on Smith regardless? He might have changed since 2007 but at the same time they should have tape on him nonetheless.

But here’s what gets me, whenever we talk about the giants or the niners or somebody doing well, we always come back with the “oh once they get tape on him”, why don’t we say that about other QBs in the league, or other pitchers in the league. For example, let’s just say last year with Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan, teams had tape on them and they still went out and performed. What i’m saying is that you can say that about any player in baseball for pitching or for a QB or anybody. I may be just ranting about something that makes no sense, but i think what you’re saying is right, let’s see what happens, and the good QBs fight through it, and Hill did aight with it.

Reasons to root for Philly:

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
The Phillies crushed the Crockies.
The Phillies annihilated the Bums.
They have a tough time beating us.
Scott Eyre
Pedro Feliz
Their fans will give the Yankees hell.
They’re a damn good team.
Also Philly cheesesteaks are delicious.

If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

I think the opposite, actually. Both NLCS and ALCS ratings were better in Philly than LA.

Huh. Sorry, I read Natto’s post wrong. You’re right, FOX would have loved Dodgers-Yankees.

Still, Phillies-Yankees > Phillies-Rays.

Near the Staples Center.

"All I know is right now, you comeback and do you dwell on that? I think you're man enough to take it, you're man enough to chew on it, to spit it out and you learn from it. ... I think winners let it go. I think losers dwell on it and talk about it all week and that screws you up for the next opportunity going forward." - Mike Singletary after the 49ers loss to the Vikings

Funny thing is, ESPN.com has three local sites: Boston, Dallas and Chicago. No New York or Los Angeles.
